Is there any reason to get the beginner box and the regular AGoAC box?  I'm actually considering Star Colonel if this thing gets to 1.5MM, but still haven't pledged.

1) the rules in the clan box are partial

2) The clans are actually a lot harder to play on a point build basis (for most people). They're scalpels who pay a premium for their speed.

Good point, typically a Clan mech will cost 1.5-2 times as much as it's IS equivalent in weight. For example, the 75 ton Timber Wolf in the Clan starter can take on the heaviest IS 100 ton mech. The Grendel is a 55 ton mech and will gladly go after 70-75 ton IS mechs. Also, Clan piloting and gunnery start out at a higher level in play than IS mech pilots. And if you are just slightly bloodcrazed/sadistic the 45 ton Shadowcat is a flat out blast to play!

Well don't leave us in suspense!

Er... well, I was trying to be gentle and vague on purpose.

I decided to wait for retail on the figures. The whole Battletech aesthetic that I saw just wasn't pulling me in. Maybe these new sculpts would be different and be more like what I want (as seen by three of the five in the initial campaign box), but until I see something, even conceptual, I'll hold off.

Worse than that, with the BPV of a shadow-cat or Grendel & a 3/4 pilot, they'll be facing two introtech heavies each, easy.

They can do it, it just isn't easy; especially not on two map sheets. Thus why I said the clans are more difficult to play than the inner sphere.

Thanks for the information everybody!  I'm still just a watcher for now.

Honestly, I think that is going to be a common response from a lot of interested new players. Given that the Kickstarter discount is likely to be small, and none of the important rewards are exclusive, why take the risk of backing the KS, rather than waiting for retail?

A lot of the excitement is probably stemming from experienced players who are fired up over the new miniatures, but have no real need or use for yet another copy of the rules for Clan warfare. Assuming the campaign remains a rousing success, I think that's actually a very healthy balance: It gets the product funded, and produces the hype of a high-dollar Kickstarter, but also (hopefully) drives future sales in retail.

The best possible result might be for the project to hit $2m, but for a lot of people like you, @Pegazus and @WhiteWulfe to sit back, buy copies of the current Game of Armored Combat box, and buy more at retail time.

That's pretty much what my plan has become, doubly so since like you mentioned, pretty much all of it will reach retail, at some point.  I'll pick up A Game of Armored Combat at some point over the next couple of months (and probably the beginner's box too, for additional maps, and the one extra unique mech), and then prepare for the clan invasion...  Oh, and all those new sweet, sweet inner sphere mechs too.

I do wish we could use Paypal on this, but it is probably not a good idea as I don't want to be tempted to go all the way to Star Colonel...

I think in a way, that's what keeps me hesitant about signing up - it really doesn't take long for things to snowball to upwards of $400 USD, and even if I go with what I consider the bare minimums of what I'd want, it's still something like $175 USD.
