Star Colonel becomes very interesting after the $1.5m stretch goal, but I am not sure I want to drop that much cash on this project. With the maps I would like to have, that would be come a very hefty investment indeed.

What? No consideration for assembling a Comstar III-Alpha out of 6 boxes of 'mechs?

I once had ambition to paint up a full L4, but then I turned 30, and reality took over. :zombie:

Yup, as part of the two that I am ordering will go to the Highlanders, I am considering it. Also, just remembered my plastic starter mechs with another 2 companies of IS mechs, so that changes my mental numbers too.

So, while we were sleeping the Inner Sphere capitulated to the demands of the Clans!  Catalyst listened to its backers and brought back the Kodiak.

Latest update adds a new Ad Hoc Clan Star Pack consisting of :

Kodiak

Fire Falcon

Hellion

Pack Hunter

Howler

Also announced, all backers will become part of the Mechwarrior: Destiny Closed Beta.

And we are less than 15k from the 1.5 million stretch goal.

$1,211 from the 1.5 million mark!  And good news about the Kodiak, has there been any word on whether we can choose the 5 mech pack from the starter as one of the included [not add-on] Stars?

YES! 1.5!

YES! 1.5!

"As usual, this Star Pack may be selected with any Star/Lance Pack reward, and is also available as an add-on."

So yep!

Important teaser from the 1.5 million update:
"In the next few days, we've  a slew of great updates coming, from complete details on the Pledge Manager, to our new worldwide fulfillment partner, to a 2m Stretch Goal that will have the community frothing with excitement!"

I find it interesting how some plan everything out in advance.

With next to no knowledge of the game, or what I'd want to play, I've gone with the pokemon approach, and just added $25 to my pledge....

So...if I'm effectively a noob but want a decent mix of IS and Clan stuff, what kind of recommendations would you all have for Star/Lance packs to choose?  At Bloodnamed level....

Step one: become a Star Colonel

Step two: bump up your pledge to cover the rest of the different packs so you get one of everything!

Step three: eat a lot of instant ramen or KD for a couple of months until you recover from buying many mechs.

On a more serious note, it depends on what you want, and if you are planning to pick up the existing starters.

If you are getting those, that gives you 10 assorted IS mechs, or 8 of you just get AGoAC.
The Clan starter is giving you 5 Clan mechs.

If you want some ComStar, I'd consider snagging both of those, as they are more expensive as add-ons or presumably at retail (due to having 6 mechs).

Other than that I'd try to balance them out to an extent. But again, I don't know the mechs any more than you do.

I'd consider getting similar type Star/Lance packs from both, on the assumption there are somewhat balanced (like command from both of them) but I really have no idea if that is actually true.

And no matter how you balance them, the random Salvage Boxes will mess it up ::D:

Or just look at pics of them all (even the IWM ones) and find mechs that you like the looks of...

Forgot to mention, remember that Lances are only 4 mechs while Stars are 5.  And while a Lance comes with a Salvage Box, it says they will all be Omnimechs, which are all Clan mechs.

Okay, I've been playing BT forever. If you have a LGS near you go look over the Technical Readouts [TROs] they will give you a starting feel for the mechs. My recommendations for a new player at Bloodnamed level would be:

Starter Set [5 Omnis]

2 Salvage boxes [included]

IS Command Lance [includes Salvage box]

IS Battle Lance [includes Salvage box]

IS Direct Fire Lance [includes Salvage box]

This gives you 12 IS mechs, a Company and a Binary of Omnis, now you can add one more Pack. If you plan on getting the currently released Starter [either one] go with another Star of Omnis, I would recommend the Fire Star. You really need, generally speaking, about 1.5 to 2 times the level of IS mechs to Clan for even fights.

Okay, a kind of quick breakdown of the mechs in the Starter pack.

Executioner [Gladiator]is a 95 ton jump capable Assault mech. Very scary when outfitted properly

Timber Wolf, {Mad Cat] 75 tons of pure nasty, can take on ANY IS mech and most Clan Assault mechs, this is arguably the best mech in Battletech.

Nova, [Blackhawk] tough, versatile, 50 tons of headache

Grendel [Mongrel}.45 tons of fast, tough Omni Medium

Adder, [Puma]a 35 ton light mech with good speed and fearsome weapons

All of these are Omnimechs, which means you can swap out your choice of weapons as long as you have the space and tonnage available. Some of the Clan packs are second line mechs, that cannot swap weapons, but are equally fierce as Clan weaponry is superior to IS . The IS packs I recommended above have the advantage that all of the mechs in them have many, many variants and a are a good mix of classes. Also, they are all playable in 3025 and older editions. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the replies.  Definitely useful information.  But let me ask this differently.  Are the Star/Lance packs assembled with some kind of theme in mind, or are they effectively a random assortment?  If they are thematic, what battlefield roles are best to address as a beginner?

And thank you!  That was really helpful!

Oh, and I'm not ruling out Star Colonel yet.  I did buy the AGoAC box.  Should be delivered in a few days.

The Clan packs fall into 2 categories, Omnimechs and Second line mechs. The Clans use a eugenics program to breed their warriors, called Trueborns. It is an Up or Out society, where older pilots are shunted out of front line units, these will end up in Solahma units generally issued the Second line mechs. The Omnis are the premier mechs but the Second line stuff is still very, very nasty due to Clan weapons. Some mechs are more common with certain Clans, but really almost any Clan mech from the 3050, 3055 or 3058 can be used by any Clan. Don't worry about what Clan to run yet, get a feel for them and you will find out that each Clan has a different feel. I have a Trinary of Jade Falcon and 3 other Trinaries right now that will probably wind up as Ghost Bear. [The weeping you heard about the Kodiak was from Bears as the Kodiak is a symbol of the Clan]

On the IS side, the packs are a mixed bag, each giving some of the most classic and loved of the IS mechs. Warhammer, Marauder, Archer, Atlas are all classics. Many of our favorites are in the current Starters. These all have mechs of different weight classes.

The Star League Packs are mechs that were very rare in 3050, except for those that Comstar had carefully stored away. Again, mixed weight classes.

They're grouped mostly around role.  For example, the Battle and Heavy Lances is intended to be a front-line unit (although I question the placement of the Wasp in the Battle Lance), the Direct Fire Lance is intended to stand back and support the Battle Lance from range (although many of the 'Mechs listed have missiles too), and so on.

      Story
It was the Baron himself who nailed up the poster in Midlam the town square.
WANTED:  LADY WILDWOOD and sundry associated gang members - For Murder, extortion, petty theft and highway robbery.  REWARD - 10 Gold Coins for Lady Wildwood and 1 Gold Coin per gang member.
Speculation and rumour was rife!  Who were these new Bandits that were plaguing Midlam?  Who was the mysterious and dangerous Lady Wildwood? It seemed that the town had been under siege, first from Captain Grief's Gang and then the Hobgoblin Rainding Party, and now this gang of merciless women!
Bounty hunters muttered in dark corners of Inns, looking for information and squads of Town Guard regularly marched out into the surrounding countryside in their pursuit.
But still the robberies and raids continued...
      Waylaid by Bandits Volume Two
A gang of eleven 28mm scale bandits, thugs and ruffians, lead by the Notorious Lady Wildwood, for all of your fantasy miniature games.
      Waylaid by Bandits Volume One
You can also, should you wish, include our first bandit gang with your pledge.  Captain Grief's Gang is a series of of eleven 28mm scale bandits, thugs and ruffians, including the original stretch goal 'George the Grind'.  You could then mix and match your bandits or have them as deadly rivals!

It's only an 11 day  project, so hury up and back.

Tomb Guardians over the past year has been asked to release our miniatures in a resin/plastic material because a lot of you do not like metal.  So for nearly a year we have discussed and researched the best way to produce a high quality, high detail miniature that is far above the current standard on the market.  We are happy to announce that we have found a method and decided to release all our 28mm monsters in a High Resolution Resin.  These miniatures will come with a 1 year guarantee, if you break one we will replace it for FREE!  Just mail it back to us.   Bobby Jackson, Jason Weibe, Gene Van Horne and Patrick Keith help create these amazing creatures.  We hope you enjoy our Monsters and want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
