Is the Fortean Times still published? We used to get good adventure hooks from that.

Seems to be, however several years ago they hid the daily news updates behind a paywall. 89$ for a 12 issue subscription isn't something I can afford unfortunately. I miss the way they did the layout, links to articles from all over the globe, updated daily, no snarky commentary.

Not looking forward to Monday through Wednesday this week, getting a Colonoscopy, tried before Christmas, but didn't get clean enough. Soooooo, I get TWO days of cleansing this time.....yeesh.

You have my sympathies.

I underwent this a few weeks ago.  Due to family history I was unable to take over-the-counter options and had to use the prescription.  Drank the gunk that night, then up at 3 or 4 to finish.  At least I was able to watch some MST3K on TV (it's a Samsung thing) to keep my mind busy.  Ten minutes, drink, ten minutes, drink, side trip...drink.  Etc.  Good news was I don't have to do it again for five years.

On the bright side, the "don't care juice" in the IV was good stuff.  I was thoroughly KO'd.

Coffee!!

I had set aside most of today to work on a project for work. I've gotten chunks of minutes to work on it. <_< been one of those weeks...

Tonight's hot valentines date night looks like its gonna be tacos from the truck 2 blocks away, and Start Trek Picard. Now, do I finish off the wine, or get some beer on the way home?

FYI, the taco truck dinner was amazing, and episodes 3 & 4 of Picard were fantastic! And we (I) finished off the wine, and I got beer, now in the fridge.

Done studying for the night. Working on some stuff for the megadungeon.

Well, I can definitively state that life is what happens when you are making other plans. :upside:

Wife is supposed to be at a Convention in San Jose, Ca for our Junior Branches of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs.

Packed up the car and drove her up there yesterday, only to discover when we tried to check in to a motel that she had misplaced her debit card for the account designated to pay for our trip expenses.  Long and short of it, after much sturm and drang  I ended up driving us right back home, close to a 900 mile round trip.

Slept all day and I still have that cotton-wool feeling in the brain.

Yes, she did find her card, in the pocket of the pants she had worn the previous day to go shopping.

Next weekend we have to be in Placerville, Ca. for a reception that falls on her Birthday.:bday:  Going there after more business related to the ongoing saga of Mr. GEM Builds His Dream House.  I have to eyeball the nearest telephone pole and transformer as Nevada Energy can't seem to find these things by looking at their own records, so it's up to me to tell them where their equipment is located.  The upside is that our mini-barn is ready for use so I will be packing as many boxes of books and storage tubs full of "stuff" in the car and on the basket carrier as we can manage.  Let the moving commence!

GEM

Addendum:  Forgot to mention that we had a very nice dinner on the way up at Harris Ranch, all according to my carefully laid Valentine's Plans.  For those of you not familiar with Harris Ranch, they are a very large Family Farming and Ranching operation, been in business for over 80 years.  If you see beef in your local market labeled Harris Ranch, it's from them.

Good stuff.  They raise their own hay and grain and all of their beef is grain finished.  They reserve out the best of the best to serve at their Restaurant and Hotel/Resort located along Interstate 5 in the west side of the Central Valley in California.  Most of the veggies are also  local produce from their extensive farming operation.  Slightly pricey but superior quality.

They also have a "hobby"/sideline of breeding race horses and are fairly well known in racing circles

It was a toss up between our traditional visit to a local burger place, or gyros.  Mediterranean place was closer, and we didn't feel like eating out so I got take-out.  No cooking, no clean up, win-win.

Appears to be, including a digital edition.

I see @Lord of the Dish Pit has checked them out and they have a rather high Pay Wall in place.

The local river god appears to desire to flush the pesky man apes from her banks.  I would not care particularly one way or the other if she wasn't threatening to flood my parking lot in the process.  I'll know in the morning if moving my precious chariot to higher ground will be necessary.

Singles Awareness Day was pretty busy yesterday. More people walked in than I expected, and we surprised a few couples with a free upgrade to a jacuzzi suite. One couple asked for a romantic touch weeks ago, and we provided lighting, rose petals, wine and chocolate for them. They were very pleased about it, and we got good reviews for making it a special day for our guests.

Our first Valentine's day together, Grump took me to a forty year old hot tub place that had reopened after being closed for TWENTY YEARS.

The place smelled of mildew and bleach, and the sound system built into the wall had a slot for an 8 Track tape.

It had faux-wood paneling on the walls, and hanging light covers that had been made by melting colored beads together.

It's true what they say, a bad date can make for a good story. Tacky as the place was, it is a very happy memory.

The place is still around, I think, but completely renovated the next year.

Have you tried offering the river god a couple of bagels? Might help.

I mean... yeah. Of course. Why wouldn't it?

And for those who'd be interested, here's the soup recipe: https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/235862/chicken-and-hominy-soup-with-lime-and-cilantro/

Studying is... well... it's going. Ongoing, really. On and on and on and on... *sigh*

Did take a break to watch the most recent @7Ninjasinatrenchcoat and Black Magic Crafts videos. I was thrilled to see a Battlefleet Gothic Orc cruiser on the workbench... and he's making me want to break my "No GW purchases!" and get some of that contrast paint.

I haven't seen an ork cruiser in a long time... even the ones in my collection have been buried for a while.  I did like the design of the gothic ships.

I do like the contrast paints.  They aren't the miracle solution GW would like it to be but they have a lot of uses. I have a number of the browns for quick fur and skelies but I really should get some of the other colors.

I once had a chance to buy Ork cruisers at $0.59 each. And I passed. ::(:

So, I’m gonna rant a little here, feel free to ignore it if you want.

This is all about my mom’s medical tribulations. As background, she’s disabled, received SSI disability income, and is on Medicaid.

For the last eight years she’s had this issue with her eye, an osteoma (like a bone growth). It took forever just to get it diagnosed, and when she finally did, because she’s on Medicaid, she got the worst surgeon ever, some quack with all kinds of pending litigation. Three years ago Dr. Dumbelf did a surgery to remove the osteoma, but he was more focused on make my mom’s nose look better (or something) and didn’t do the job right.

It came back.

Last year, in February, she had her second surgery, again with The Quack. This time her was too aggressive and injured her, so her recovery time was lengthened.

All last year she’s been sick, having what she calls headache bombs, barely able to function. She thought she was having strokes. In November she was finally able to be seen by her “regular” doctor (first time in two years), got an MRI, and the osteoma was back. It grew back faster than before.

And she STILL has to go to that QUACK. To be seen by someone else SHE had to call around looking for doctors that take Medicaid, work in this specialty, and don’t care about the quack. A lot of the doctors she spoke didn’t want to offend the quack. (Meanwhile, the quack is pouting, and now wouldn’t do the THIRD surgery on my mom if she couldn’t  find a second opinion. Because apparently he’s less mature than my baby.)

Anyway, my mom finally found a doctor that doesn’t give a crap about Dr. Dumbelf, BUT he might not take her anyway, because she has a lower chance of being a success, and this elfholes doesn’t want his success rates to fall.

It’s so frustrating to watch my mom be in pain and none of the people who are supposed to be helpful, are helping her! Her idiot “regular” doctor injured her because she didn’t believe my mom has a chronic pain condition!

The BS my mom has to put up with is why I don’t trust doctors and probably never will.

Been a while since we've had a food picture on here....

I think my crock pot's going to file an official complaint this time...  Several potatoes (probably a few pounds, since it was a third of a 10lb bag), two paw sized yellow onions (the new thing this time!), about one pound of carrots, half a thing of celery, half a bunch of green onions, about 3/4 of a thing of beef stock, many generous splashes of Lea & Perrins, and then what I'm playfully calling mystery cuts of meat because the butcher I deal with was in the middle of making ground beef, didn't have any stew beef prepped, and didn't have anywhere he could prep such, so he gave me two packs of meat that were higher quality but kept the price the same.  Now if only 01:55 me had taken a decent picture of said meat, because I've no idea what cuts he offered me.  All I know is I'm looking forward to twelve hours from now...

Spoiler

Yeaaaah, I abuse my stay or go lid a tad too often, but it's saved me sooooo many times when there's been a decent amount of liquid in there...  I'm also rather curious as to what the onions will do for a stew.  Scary part is I also have other things I want to add in when I wake up (a five bean mix) but we shall see if there will even be room for such at that point.  And yup, I know, meat's supposed to go on the bottom, but I wanted it to be the last thing I did so I only had to clean my cutting board once >.>;;;

You don't brown your beef first?

You don't have too, I never do and it always turns out great in the crockpot anyway. Browning is a lot of extra effort for a miniscule flavor boost.  I always add bouillon, worchester sauce,  pepper, bay leaf and salt,  though.
