Randomness XVI: Brains versus Bleach - an Epic Rap Battle in Iambic Pentameter.

Recommended Posts

We're up to 26 confirmed cases in Tennessee, the bulk in metro Nashville and the county just south. Only an hour away!

Wasting time at home is how I regularly piddle my days away, so I guess I'm prepared. I haven't had fast food in days now tho. This carries on long enough it might actually end up saving my life.

Might make a trip to the park again. Open air, no contact. Seems a responsible enough outing to me.

Kinda want to head out into the sticks and go down to this nice little spot where two creeks meet below a hill, sit in the shade of the trees in the old country church's parking lot and read while the water murmurs on by below, but it's been raining so I'm not sure the car will make it across the low-water crossings without floating.

More news/thoughts on virus stuff; I'm putting it in a spoiler so those that are tired of hearing about this whole mess can skip it, I totally won't blame you.

Made a discovery backwards earlier today; rather than reading about stuff online and then seeing the effects locally, this time MrBoot popped out this afternoon to get a couple of salad ingredients and returned home almost immediately. The parking lots for both grocery stores near us were packed SOLID, with cars circling. I was very confused, and wondered if my area had also had a zombie apocalypse and nobody had mentioned it yet.

Turns out just a few hours earlier, the governor of WA state formally closed all K-12 schools starting March 17th through to April 24th. So...yeah. It's a thing. Local friends were posting pictures on Facebook of the lines inside various stores, 20-30 minute waits at the checkout, etc.

We ended up venturing out around 9pm partially just to see what was left (but also because salad; MrBoot makes EPIC salads ::D: ). It was...well, weird is the only way I can describe it. Even that late, there were still lots of people in Winco, and it was fascinating to see what was totally gone and what was untouched. Rice, flour, sugar, canned beans/fruits/most veggies, pasta were among the ones I was expecting to be totally gone. Peanut butter was a slight surprise, as was red and orange bell peppers (but not green...?). I was surprised at how much wasn't gone, actually. Still plenty of produce, though perhaps not what you were originally looking for. Still some bread, plenty of ice cream and snack foods, with all the candy practically untouched. Zero frozen veggies, but quite a few premade frozen meals still around. Several unwrapped pallets of bottled water were stashed around, waiting to be uncrated.

It was just...again, just a very weird experience. I saw upper-level stock areas bare that I've never seen empty before, long stretches of shelves with nothing on them but maybe a few dented cans or a lone box. I'm sure those of you who live/have lived in more disaster-prone areas have probably seen this kind of thing before, but it's a first for me. It's just...surreal, like the two of us had accidentally wandered onto the set of a post-apocalyptic movie during one of the opening scenes, the part where the reality of things is setting in and everyone is suddenly realizing "oh wait this is really happening."

So...yeah. Gonna be something to tell the young whippersnappers about someday, I guess. I wish I'd thought to snap at least one photo myself, but honestly I was too absorbed in observing the goings-on to think about it until later.

The only really important bit is that all WA state K-12 schools are now closed until April 24th.

OK.

What happens after April?

I kinda think the world could use an extended spring break ...just shut it all down for a bit... but the plan/hope for after that is what?

When the world gins up again, as it must if peoople don’t want to starve, then what? Doesn’t the virus just start spreading again?

I dropped in to our local Trader Joe’s Friday morning at opening and it was packed. Lines all the way up the aisles to the back. I was just there to get eggs, fruits & vegetables, but we really needed them since college kid is coming back for spring break. It took 45 minutes, which is beginning to sound like it wasn’t too bad.

Yeah, we’re also on a road trip to pick up said college kid. Which means we are way far from home in a hotel in a strange and strangely quiet city, where half the people are wearing gloves and wiping down everything and the other half are eating, drinking, and being merry. Everyone seems jittery.

With any luck we’ll have college kid in the car in a couple of hours and be able to skedaddle back to the family compound to hunker down and be supportive of our neighbors,

Music in my head: “Don’t Fear The Reaper,” “Don’t Stand So Close To Me,” “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)”

At least it isn't The Furure's So Bright. ( Thanks Grump, I liked that song until you told me what it's about. <_< Yeah, nuclear bombs ARE bright.)

Maybe something cheery, calling back to childhood? Ring s ring of posies, a pocket full of posies?

You know, all you need to do is start painting landscapes of your park and run across a dog named Kojak, and you're be the forum's version of Glen Bateman from The Stand. (introduced chapter 37)

I'll take one for the team and cast myself as Randall Flagg, since I resemble the way he was drawn in the Marvel comic adaptation, except with a few extra pounds and a lack of buttons on my jacket.

Which leads to the question, who's our version of Stu Redman gonna be?

Welp, Grump's afterschool game is on indefinite hiatus.

And today we are having an emergency business meeting about whether the retreat - in AUGUST! - happens this year.

Covid-19 is definetly having an impact.

I don't know if the Wednesday Kids game will continue, either.

Maine now has two cases of Covid-19.

And, not to be an alarmist, but one of the members of the board for the retreat is named Randall Flagg. (Okay, Robert Flagg, but way too close! ) <purple

Well the basic theory I heard is that we aren't trying to completely stop the spread of COVID because that's likely impossible. They just want to slow it down so that hospitals aren't overwhelmed at a massive peak. Taking all the potential cases and spreading them over a 2-3 month period instead of a 2-3 week period.

We always keep a decent supply of food ahead other than fresh veggies and a bit of meat just because we buy bulk a lot of the time. A week ago when we were in the city they hoarding hadn't started here yet. Now the cities are getting low on things but the local small town groceries are good. Waffling about stocking up a bit on our regular dry/canned goods. If we can get eggs and milk we'd be set for a couple weeks easy although the variety wouldn't be great.

The wife still doesn't want to give up her vacation so we've been keeping an eye on news reports involving here and there. For me the worse case situation would be getting quarantined there. Here my normal lifestyle is is pretty much self quarantine. It'd be a huge nightmare to get somebody to do my work for a couple weeks extra. As for catching the virus while we're gone I'm thinking the airports and resort are likely to be nearly empty so it might be safer than home. When the swine flu hit about 10 years ago we were travelling including through a country hit hard. Never caught it and then it got us months later at home. I wasn't that excited about travelling right now anyway so I'd just as soon wait until things blow over. We'll see what the commisar general (wife) decides by Monday depending on new developments.

Yup, the whole thing starts up again.

However, assuming that the slow-down was successful in nipping cases of COVID in the bud then there are fewer cases to continue the spread and we're used to some basic procedures to slow the spread.  In theory, the people who had low-level exposures are now immune or resistant so the virus can't backtrack through them.  It's a whole three steps forward, one step back, thing.  The next time the virus starts to ramp up, we'll face more of the same, but there will be fewer closures (it's a natural human reaction, I guess), and we'll go through it again.

Instead of COVID running through the entire population in 3 months (made-up number), it's now five months (also a made-up number) and health services and natural immunity (hopefully) have time to keep up.  Yes, they're trying to stop COVID if they can, but the real goal is to slow it down to the point where doctors, hospitals, TP manufacturing, immune systems, etc. don't get overwhelmed.

I've been thinking a bit about peoples' reactions and finger-pointing at the media.  I think some of it is justified, not all of it.  Just some, and not because the media haven't been talking about COVID.  The media have been gradually de-sensitizing us with ultra-sensational headlines for years.  There's one station that's especially bad about it in the local market.  I wouldn't have been surprised to see the oft-told dihydrogen monoxide joke on that station (with them treating it as a legit story).

Good news is that China believes they're close to finding patient zero.  From back in November.

What good is finding patient zero?? How does that help?

( I suppose it might be some comfort to know that the very first fool to try fricasseed bat gizzard was going to hang by his thumbs somewhere for the foreseeable future... Yay? )

Or did they abandon the hypothesis that this came from bats....?

Can be useful for tracking spread and change of the disease over time. Gives you information on what to look for to try and interrupt transmission earlier in an outbreak if something similar happens again.

also helps you find out if it really did come from bat, and then check to see if there's similar diseases in the same animal that are likely to hit humans, so you can start working on the virus before it hits us.

Looks like I'm indirectly affected by COVID-19 after all.

Nearly all public events are cancelled, I learned that my local gym shut down under city orders. I want to visit my mother next Wednesday after a job interview, but they're talking about banning all visits to retirement homes (unsure if it includes the private sector or just the public ones), and recommend any 70+ senior to stay home (mom is 75). The retirement home is currently cancelling the cafeteria's salad bar and bread bar (which makes sense).

The day before my interview, I'll be visiting my sister. All of the kids are home because all schools are closed for the next two weeks (from grade school all the way to university), and even my brother in law who works in an insurance company, will work from home. If I can't visit my mother, I'll spend another night at my sister's place before heading back home.

On the positive, I still have plenty of TP for weeks. So I avoided that particular madness.

They started closing nursing homes to all but essential personnel around here after the CDC or whoever made the recommendation earlier this week. Definitely the way to go imo, given how much worse this is on the elderly, but I'd be super nonplussed if I couldn't see my mom or dad because of it.

Online teaching isn't being offered at all. My mother teaches in an area with a lot of disadvantaged students and she knows several students who got kicked out of their families and don't have a home to go to. I'm not sure if she has the give-a-damn anymore to make sure those students are safe enough before heading back to the garden to ignore it all. She used to but... the school board has made it so difficult to care. It's why she's retiring at the end of the year.

Because it's not just the well-off schools with resources and money that are being affected.

Over here people have also been hoarding TP,  totally unnecessary.

There is no shortage.

So, supermarkets are starting to put a limit on certain items to prevent people from clearing a shelve in a few minutes.

It's not the end of the World people.

We have 17 Million people, 800 people infected, 10 passed away who were both elderly and already very sick.

Other than the fact it's a new virus and there is no vaccin, spreading fast etc, I still think we're overreacting.

Welcome to Getting to Know You, NOVEMBER 2020 Edition.

The rules as they currently stand ( we all know most of you rebellious lot will ignore most of it, but one can try)

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question.
1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one...
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted between 8:00 hours and 12:00 hours CET. ( Central European Time)
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to me...
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions will usually take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.

      All HAIL WOOF!

Congratulations, by opening this forum post, you have received a quest!
This quest is a challenge created by the combined forces of @Sirithiliel the Queen Tiamacrab, a Wizard Most Wild @Pezler the Polychromatic, and myself – @Cyradis the Questgiver.
The challenge is this! Paint a small dragon, letting the dice control the colors!
      The Rules:
Post in the WIP Forums “_Your Pseudonym_ is taking the random rainbow dragon challenge!” or “_Your Pseudonym_ has accepted the d20 rainbow dragon quest!” something to that extent.

Select a figure from one of the following: Stormwing (from Bones III), Kryphrixis (from Bones III), Deathsleet (77110), or Ebonwrath (77102).

You must select the dragon BEFORE rolling for colors. Take a photo with the figure and a clock as proof of order of operations.
Roll for colors! Use a d20 and a photo, or an online dice roller with a screenshot as proof of rolling. Or have a fellow forum dweller vouch for your rolls. Use the Color Chart below to determine what the color is that you rolled. There are three rolls. Below is an online dice roller. Most keyboards have a PRT SCRN button that can take a screenshot for you. Then you can paste the photo into Paint to save. I'm sure there are better methods, but that works for me.

      https://www.wizards.com/dnd/dice/dice.htm

The first roll determines what your primary base color is. That must be the dominant color on the figure.

The second roll determines your secondary color. It should be the second color that catches the eye, and second most prevalent color on the figure.

The third roll determines your miscellaneous color. This should be most of the accent colors that you use, and third most prevalent color on the figure.

You might need to order paint or go to the FLGS after rolling if you don’t have a given bottle – we’ll be patient and wait for you. If you can’t get a bottle of one of these colors, here is a spreadsheet with equivalent colors from different brands. If you really can't get them, use the closest thing you got to your rolls (let us know what they are please).

      Pure White
      Super white. Critical threat!

You are allowed to use whatever colors to shade and highlight that you want, as long as the rolled colors are obvious visually.* Example: you can shade a red dragon with purple, brown, or black, but it must always appear as a red dragon. A white dragon shaded with grey must appear as a white dragon, not a grey dragon.
You are allowed to use colors outside the ones that you rolled, but they must not take up more visual surface area than any of the others.** Example: your pink, green, and gray dragon is allowed to have bone-beige teeth.
The proportions of color on the figure can be however you want, as long as the 1st roll is dominant, 2nd is less, 3rd is less, and anything else smaller. Example: 70% pink, 15% green, 10% gray, and 5% anything else. Or it could be 50% pink, 25% green, 15% grey, and 10% anything else. The tidbit colors are fine wherever, as long as they are minor.
Paint your dragon according to the rolls plus your tidbits. Even if it is outrageous. The goal is to make the dragon look as awesome as possible without the benefit of planning color themes. You can add spots, stripes, eye-spots like moths have, or nothing. This is the base challenge.
Star 1* You may decide after your initial three rolls to limit your shading colors to your rolled colors mixed with pure black and white. You may still use tidbit colors. Declare this if you go for a Star 1 challenge!
Star 2** You may decide after your initial three rolls to not use colors outside of your rolled ones and shading colors (so no tidbits like beige teeth, only 3 visual colors shaded however you want). Declare this if you go for a Star 2 challenge!
Star 3*** You may decide to do both the Star 1 and Star 2 challenges, using absolutely nothing but your three rolled colors, plus black and white for shading. If you do this, you are allowed to use the white for areas like teeth and eyes that could be really weird otherwise (or not - up to you). Effectively, you have 5 colors to work with only, and three of them must be the majority (in decreasing order of prevalence). You gotta be nuts!
There is no time limit on this. However, if the WIP photos stop showing up at a normal rate and there’s never a Show Off thread, the forum dwellers may gently poke fun at you for adding this to your Shelf of Shame.
Post to the Show Off forums with a “_Your Pseudonym_ has completed the random rainbow dragon challenge!” sort of title upon completion. Brag about your awesome (or hilarious) dragon. Win all the internet-points. Receive experience and praise. Thus shall end the quest.
Once the first Random Rainbow Dragon has been completed, we will start up a group Show Off thread to compile all of the dragons in a great flock of rainbowy goodness.

After seeing my first thread on it (I think it was @Glitterwolf's thread for such an honour) my first thought was pretty much "that looks like a LOT of fun", followed closely by "but I've never painted anything other than a few Space Marines!".  Yeah, well, challenge accepted, because I kind of fell in love with how Ebonwrath looks.

Yup, I'm going into this technically with very little skill in painting, but while I'm waiting for Ebonwrath (and some gnolls and paint, gnolls are the honour guard for the paint, I swear) I'll have both of the learn to paint kits to work through, and assuming everything pans out (aka assuming I filled out my Canada Post FlexDelivery stuff correctly) I'll be picking those up after work today, and then about a week and a half (ish) later Ebonwrath will be in.  Seems like a semi-insane thing to do, dive right into painting a dragon when you originally were getting paints to steadily work on your WH40k Catachans army (and Skaven, sooooo many Skaven o_O ), but I figure why not have fun with life.  Besides, what better to put all the new skills the LTPK's are designed to help you get a baseline grasp on than a gigantic dragon of cuddles DOOOOOOOM that, in my eyes at least, can be bribed with cookies.

Some say I'm insane, I say to be a good delivery driver you need just enough insanity...  Not enough to pass the entrance exams, but enough to be perfectly fine wearing shorts in -5C weather.  :P

      Anyways, onto the rolls!

I wound up rolling 14, 19, and 3....  So Terran Khaki as the main, Pure Black as the secondary colour, and Lava Orange as a highlight.  Well now, that's an interesting mix in my eyes.  I'm not quite certain as to how this mix will pan out, but on the flipside I chose to dive into this headfirst, so I'm also going to give it a whirl as a full on three star challenge.  I'm actually kind of liking the sound of these colours, as I've had a number of different design possibilities come to mind already!

Obviously, given the current promo and Rictus seeming like a nice and dedicated, honourable skeleton, I had to get a few other items into the cart for free shipping (plus a free skeleton!), and for someone to keep the gnolls in check while Ebonwrath is napping away in it's blister pack.  Can't let the gnolls steal the cookies after all.  Pure Black is included in one of the Learn To Paint Kits, so I didn't add it into the order from Reaper.

Here's hoping I won't have to make too too much room in my gaming area to work on Ebonwrath ^_^;;;;; (since it's still another two months before I can get a dedicated miniatures area set up, but man am I looking forward to such!)

EDIT (Jan 7th @ 15:44 MST): Totally forgot to add this in...  For additional information regarding the rainbow dragon challenge, here's the main thread for it!

I don't have any of the dragons selected for the challenge. I do have the dracolisk, https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/basilisk/latest/77379
      So I'm painting that.

Die roll, 13, 18, 2.  Earth brown, palomino gold, clotted red.   Good colors.  I don't have the Earth or Clotted Red but can approximate.
