Most stores here have instituted shorter hours for the duration of the shortages.

This. I'm not sure when it started around here, but I know that Winco and Walmart, both 24 hour stores, now close at or around 11pm and open again at 7am. No idea about any special morning hours for the elderly, but it sounds like a good idea. I'm sure there are people who would abuse it and there's probably all kinds of drawbacks to such a thing that I'm not seeing, but it sounds nice in theory.

Forgot to update that MrBoot did call the doctor, who wasn't at all concerned once MrBoot had explained the situation. He said that if he lived there, or had spent several hours, then yes he should be concerned, but given that he was there so briefly AND showered right when he got home, plus still no confirmed cases in our area (which doesn't reassure me much due to so few being tested, but eh) there is no need to change his behavior at this time.

So, that was somewhat reassuring, though I think it made MrBoot feel better than it did me lol.

Huzzah!

Sigh, lost the battle to try and get my housemate to stay indoors for a while.

She's in the increased risk group, so while the odds of her getting sick are fairly low it's going to be pretty bad if she does, but she's rather OCD about our twice-weekly shopping trips, so it was always going to be a struggle to get her to give them up.

Apparently I'm making a big fuss over nothing, but I'm her carer, making a fuss is what I'm meant to do.

Not Good.

They have announced the suspension of the Hours of Service Law for the Trucking Industry.

I predict there will be an increase in the number of run off the road and roll over big rig accidents as rookies and less experienced drivers try to push beyond their personal limits.

There was a segment on 60 minutes last Sunday about driverless, autonomous big rigs. They were talking about driving non-stop, coast-to-coast in two days. No stops except for fuel. They are already road testing these things.

New Jersey is basically closed.

As is NY and CT. They coordinated. Which, I guess is nice, in the absence of federal action.... *sigh*

I don't even know if I'm going to be able to sit for the exam in a month, and have next to zero motivation to study right now. And the concert that I've got tickets for that evening after the test is probably going to be just got canceled.

Tonight the Dropkick Murphys are putting on a free live streamed concert. And I've got a nice big bottle of Guiness in the fridge, and a pair of plague doctor minis to work on. Should be a relaxing evening.

And everyone is eventually going to get it, given the nature of the virus, probably multiple times.

Why the multiple times?  Didn’t I read this Virus is a one and done?

For most people ...85% of the horde... it is a mild illness, to which they then develop, anti-bodies, and then it has difficulty spreading because most folk are immune.

There is a theory that there are actually two versions of the virus, because it mutated fairly quickly, with one being the sneaky 'no symptoms of no symptoms for two weeks' variant. This would explain the reports of people being reinfected in China.

In other news our cinemas have now closed until further notice and the majority of their staff are on 8 hour contracts

Well, looks like I am home for a while.  Today the company suspended all travel through April 15 which trashes the schedule on two of my projects and I can pretty much guarantee that at the end of the year no one will remember that travel was suspended, only that the project delivery was late.  Maybe I'm borrowing trouble but I doubt it.

Grumbling spoilered for those who should be reducing exposure and taking extra care, just like they would do every year during flu season.

To be fair my aggravation should probably be directed at the elfs who make these reactions necessary and either act like the world is ending or nothing is wrong.  If people would act responsibility most of this would not be necessary.

Maybe it's because i have been living with mortality for the last 6 years but I just do not feel the threat everyone else seems to.  I can understand reducing contact if you are or live with a threatened demographic but everything statistic says that I will get this eventually and I will be unhappy for a week or so.  Not something I haven't experienced the same or worse before.  And everyone is eventually going to get it, given the nature of the virus, probably multiple times.

This is not the same as wanting to be exposed or ignoring basic hygiene and I also understand that most of th cause of this is elf hats who won't practice basic hygiene or isolate themselves she. They are potential vectors but I really find the response overkill (no pun intended).

It just looks to me like the response we are taking to the disease will wins up causing more hardship than the exposure itself to the majority and again it will hit the poor and disabled the hardest.

Thanks for lettomg me vent.  I am complying I am just worried that we are causing more disruption than we are preventing.  A lot of the younger generation is unsocialized as it is and this will only cement that problem (Insert 'get off my lawn' joke here)   that and I fear we are only borrowing trouble for later as we get a reprieve in the summer and the world gets hit really hard when flu season hits again. In the winter and everyone has been exposed to dormant pools of infection because I know we aren't going to learn and beef up our medical infrastructure while we have the chance

You, sir, have put into words the exact vague sense of disdain I have for the humans around me.

Thank you for that.

That's first thing in the morning. None anywhere else,  and the whole yard was clear at midnight last night.

I had a clear about an inch off of my var this morning.  15 minutes closer to to coast and it was all rain.

I am aggravated at Walmart and all the other corporations that copied them to survive. (But if you like you can blame Toyota...it’s not like Wallyworld engages in original thinking.)

There is a reason we run out of things when there is any crisis, or emergency, or Hurricane, or panic, or whatever.

The whole economy of the US is deliberately designed to breakdown easily if there is an unexpected event.

Efficiency -> Increased societal wealth -> increased resiliency

I hope you are correct.

But the vulnerability exists with every product, of any kind, anywhere, 24/7.

That is why the gasoline ran out when people tried to evacuate Houston (as they’d been asked to do) 48 hours before a hurricane ploughed ashore.

And essentially everybody had a vehicle to evacuate in. Which is not the case in most of the world.
