I want to add that it wasn't bad this year, just not as amazing as last year. I found Cheddars the same - more average than excellent. Loim Posted September 10, 2019 Share Posted September 10, 2019 Luckily after venturing out a bit with Mori and Marike's husband I discovered that there are plenty of alternatives for food fairly close, as well as a grocery store. The fettucinni carbonara was as delightful as ever for me. This time I was with 3 people who had no schedule, except my husband who had 1 class the first day, and they got restless and wanted to go out. I like eating out, but I wanted to be at the con, too. We tried Torchy's since they were offering % off with Reapercon badges. Food was good but DH could not eat it, even the guacamole had chilies in it. Food for serious pepper heads only. DH managed to score some leftover pizza at the hotel and had a snack bar in our room for dinner. Firehouse Subs. Standard sandwiches on a roll. We used the free chips & drink coupons they left at the hotel for Reapercon. We liked it, even if it is standing room only at lunch time. Cheddar's. We had dinner there Friday night. Another American Grill style family restaurant in the manner of Applebee's or Chili's. I had a decent country fried steak and house salad. I wouldn't expect anything great here, but these places are usually consistently good, and cheap. Freebirds. This is a burrito place in the shopping area across University from the hotel. Buffet line giant custom burritos, the difference being that they don't put pepper or chilies on everything by default so those of you with more delicate or refined tastebuds can eat there. Thai Ocha. Small family run place. It had good ratings so we tried it and were happy and well fed. Not recommended for large groups because they are really small. Juicy Pig BBQ. It's a shack with a gravel parking lot so you know it's going to be good. And it was. Very limited seating (I think they have 3 tables and only 1 seats 4 ) saw a lot of take-out going through the door. I tend to stick to my salmon, but my husband branches out and tries other things . We go to multiple conventions every year for our Fraternal Orders, and I can tell you from a couple of decades experience that the "hotel food" can vary widely in quality, as can the service, especially outside of the normal meal hours. Houlihan's is actually above average in quality and in line in pricing from my experience. That still doesn't make it good, especially when it is a business that is a tenant of the hotel instead of being the actual hotel kitchen.
