I also have to give mad props to @Jubilee and the rest of the crew who were doing the submissions. Them and the poor judges.

The whole Con was a win for me, despite a slight case of the Con crud. I was just there to catch up with everyone and meet some new folks, so goal accomplished. Now that I know my way around the area a bit better, and know what options are locally accessible I think future cons will be a lot more fun. I can't particularly recommend the restaurant in the hotel. The staff were amazing, but the food was a bit...meh. Especially for the price. The best I could say is that it's convenient.

Cheers to everyone I got to talk to, I know I missed some of you guys this year, but everyone was pretty busy.

The point is that the award ceremony could be bumped up by any amount of time up to an hour and no classes would need to canceled. People needing food is on them to figure out ahead of time.

If that were the only issue, It could be done as a catered dinner.... $$$ but....  a thought.  My only real complaint was that the names were not in order, it shredded my nerves.

Well. Yeah. Food is for the weak. Trust me I get that. (Spoken like the Griffin that stopped for MacFood from MacD’s at 10 or 11 that morning, on the drive out and didn’t eat again until the drive home at around 9pm that **evening.)

But I have heard there are folk who get all hangry and wobbly-kneed and stuff if they don’t get sustenance at more frequent intervals.

I am not one of them.

But I sympathize with their “infirmity”.

**and I could have waited til I got home.

Jubilee has addressed some items in regards to the competition so I will leave those alone. On the judging front we are constantly expanding the number of people qualified to judge which does require at least one con as an apprentice. There were five judging teams in action on Friday night, so that's 15 people, there were at least two apprentices working their way through the process so there may be enough for six teams next year. While lots of people volunteer to be judges we do not take people right off the street and into the line up, first because not everyone has the mind set it takes to be a judge and second because there is a system to the madness and it takes time to wrap your head around what we are trying to accomplish and third because, as a judge, you need to drop your own ego off at the door, you cannot sit there and say "that piece is not as good as mine therefore it only deserves x". And the judges do some of the manufacturer judging as well on Saturday and I'm going to try and change that for next year. With the number of entries involved its difficult to even find all the entries for a given manufacturer when we are moving at Mach 5 on Saturday. We realize there are problems and we are doing our best to correct them. One thing to keep in mind is that all the people working the competition are volunteers.

On the Auction/Raffle front, I was incredibly embarrassed that I was not able to finish the auction. Hopefully Izzy did a reasonable stand in after I had to leave (and we barely made our flight as it was). I'm looking at the suggestions and at least considering everything. One thing that is probably not going to happen though is timing. We cannot tear down on Monday, it all has to go out on Sunday night. The extra expense of staying an extra day on site is prohibitive.

Vendors, I do what I can. I have a regular list of vendors that I work from that have attended Reaper Con in the past and they are notified first. I have added vendors that were mentioned in the thread and added them to the list and I'll see what their interest is next year.

Tomb Guardian Miniatures - on my list, contacted me and indicated interest but didn't follow through with a booth.

Fat Dragon - added to the list

Effin Cool Miniatures - added to the list

Impact Miniatures - have been trying to attend for the last couple of years but things seem to keep getting in the way.

RMJ Game Company - added to the list

First Legion - added to the list

Stonehaven Miniatures - added to the list

3D Printcraft

Secret Weapon - Labor Day weekend is a no go for them

Warsenal - added to the list

Things from the Basement - added to the list

Litko - added to the list, but I'm not sure he actually attends conventions, but certainly worth an email to find out.

I'm happy to answer questions and take suggestions. Just realize that sometimes a suggestion sounds really good but the implementation is not feasible.

RIGHT?!?

My last name starts with O, I should be in the middle of anything.... I was literally the LAST one called for Silver... I can't count how many time I thought I'd finally hit gold.... sigh, the silver was was fine with me, but the nerve wracking made me want to throw it through one of those f'd up projector screens.

I haven't seen the award list but it wouldn't surprise me that it is alphabetized but its first sorted by numerical values. So the first batch would be alphabetized low silvers (a score of 8), the second batch would be alphabetized middle silvers ( a score of 9) and the last batch would be alphabetized high silvers ( a score of 10). What was your score?

High silver (10). I'd prefer the whole section just be alphabetized by name (suggestion) I'd swear that's how it was in previous years; this is my 5th silver, and the first time I've noticed this and last year was a high silver as well. My entire table was noticing how 'they kept starting over.' We thought it was part of the technical difficulties...

Look man, I'm not trying to fight with you, and I'm not trying to belittle anyone. The original problem was that the award ceremony went on for a very long time. One solution was to start it earlier. An argument against that idea was that it meant cutting a class. I provided a solution that satisfied both requirements (starting earlier and not cutting any classes).

You mentioned needing that time for folks to get food.  I said that is for people to figure out for themselves. I never said that people should skip eating, or that food is for the weak, or any other such nonsense. I am not begrudging anyone the right to not be hungry. All I'm saying is that people need to take some responsibility for themselves, and plan accordingly.

Classes are actually 1 hour and 45 minutes long, so the last class before the ceremony ends at 6:45. If the award ceremony were to be pushed up to 7:30, that leaves 45 minutes to acquire food. If it were to be pushed up to 7:00, that leaves enough time to get to ones room, drop off/pick up stuff and get downstairs. That's where planning accordingly comes in. If I am in the last class before the award ceremony, then I need to make plans beforehand to have food for myself whether that is eating an early dinner, having a few pieces of leftover pizza in the fridge to bring down with me, or something else. The other 1400 people there shouldn't have to wait for 100-ish people (10 classes X 10 people/class approx.); those 100 people need to make appropriate plans. That doesn't seem all that unreasonable to me.

That's what I meant when I said:

So, IMO, pushing the award ceremony up is a viable option, since it can be done without having to cut any classes.

They were in alphabetical order in past years regardless of levels.

Setting any question of classes and food aside, from what Jubilee mentioned upthread, it sounds like the deadline for entering the contest might need to be moved up as well. If the current deadline is noon, and it takes the judging/logistics team from noon until ceremony-go-time to be ready, it sounds like moving the ceremony up without moving the entry deadline up as well might not be feasible.

Whether an 11a.m. entry deadline is feasible, I couldn't say.

You have a lot of company, that change stressed some people out so bad they were nearly in tears.

I should stress that it didn't bother me much, only because once I've surrendered my figures to the judges they get what they get and I don't worry about it, but I observed an enhanced level of distress among some eager to see how they scored.

So if I have any suggestion it's that whatever merits the new order has might perhaps be balanced against this.  It gave some people a very unhappy time.

edit:  the reason for the stress is because previously if you were aiming for a higher medal then once they got past your name at each level you could say "well at least I got bronze, or silver"  with the new way you were on tenterhooks each time it reset the name order so people looking to do very well were stressed through the whole thing and not just the period close to their name.  It put them constantly on edge through each tier of awards through each category they entered, making it a prolonged agony for them.
