77285: Skeletal Champion: An exercise in blending

Recommended Posts

When I went to ReaperCon 2018, I took three minis with me to practice on.  Arrius was the first of them covered here.  This is the second.

The original plan was to do NMM with this one too but this is my "relaxation" spot, not my "challenge" spot, so that's not happening.  The goal here is to do his cloak with blending, with Runic Purple as the midtone.  Everything else (and possibly still the cloak) is going to be tabletop-ish.  (Hm.  I wonder how Dragon Bronze would look for the armor against the Runic Purple cloak.  Only one way to find out!)

So this is where he's at now:

I primed with diluted Brown Liner and then scraped mold lines.  I should probably reprime the bare plastic.  The base has been built up a little with green stuff impressed with the Happy Seppuku Cave Steps stamp.

The only work I did at ReaperCon was to basecoat his skull and hand in Skeleton Bone and fill in his eyes, so I have almost a blank canvas.

(Why Runic Purple?  I asked my wife for a color recommendation and she suggested a purple.  And I'm trying to use paints I haven't used before.)

I sorta like what these colors suggest ... a skeleton with a brown palette.  An exercise in browns and creams and off whites.  I know you have other plans, but you've given me a great idea.

Waiting to see how your choices work out.

I tested out Runic Purple and Dragon Bronze.  They looked pretty good so I went with that.

At the end of painting on Saturday, I had done the rest of the bone, painted the leather bits with Oiled Leather, painted an undercoat for Dragon Bronze using Russet Brown, and painted the cloak using Runic Purple:

Tonight, I painted the base using Desert Stone and painted the Dragon Bronze for the armor:

So far so good.  He's rather shiny right now, but the wash should bring that down.  Lining will also help immensely.

I think what I'm going to do is wash/drybrush everything but the cloak and then work on his cloak.  This way, if there are any errant mica flakes from the drybrushing, I can clean up the cloak easily.

Tonight, my wife and I went to our local meadery's craft night, and I got the drybrushing and lining done:

I think his jaw needs a bit of touching up.  Otherwise, next up is working on his cloak.

My wife has taken to calling him "Emperor Skeletor".

I worked on shading his cloak last night, with Army of Darkness on in the background.

The color progression is: Walnut Brown -> Styx Purple  -> Runic Purple -> Amethyst Purple -> Linen White

There's some Sorcerous Mist in there too but I stopped using it because it was too close in value to the Linen White.

I'm not sure how I feel about the back of his cloak.  There's a level of contrast there that I'm not quite comfortable with and I don't know why.  (As an apprentice-level painter, maybe this is a good thing?)  Maybe some (but only some) of the highlights need to be knocked down a little.  It looks much better at arm's length though.

I think some of the shadowed folds should be highlighted slightly to better sell the shadows.

What do you think?

I did more work on his cloak, mostly bringing down some of the highlights on the back of his cloak and bringing up the highlights on folds on the other sides.

I think the cloak looks better now.  What do you think?

I'm almost done.  All that's left is to fix his jaw and add some vegetation to his base.

Doesn't he look like he should be addressing his troops?  Or monologuing?

He looks like the classic villain who has captured the heroes, now he's telling them all about his evil brilliant plans.

Of course then the heroes will escape and thwart his plans.

How did they know????
