Ash is also a tree; often referenced in ... druidic ritual? wiccan ritual?  Oak, Ash and Thorn (probably hawthorne) are often used for such things. I don't know if that helps any, but... might give you an alternative to search?

The ash trees here have been decimated by the Emerald Ash Borer. So many missing-tooth gaps everywhere. I didn’t have the heart.

When I did a google image search on Ash (because I had no good idea how to ink that or much inspiration at all) do you know what turned up?

1000 variations of the kid from the Pokemen franchise, and nothing else in the first gazillion hits.

Apparently that’s his or her name. Who knew?  Everybody that is not me is who....

:ik_oops:

I did the same search and had the same reaction. I'm old enough to have missed the whole Pokemon thing (I'd heard about it, but never watched any of the cartoons). However, I found a decent image to copy and used that.

Ash tree was what had first come to mind, but they looked complicated ::P:

I saw references to that. But only after I modified the search to Ash Tree.

(Now the great google-hive mind/electro-brain thinks I have a sick tree.)

I never did see a reference to where the wretched little green beetles came from.

Oak and Ash and Thorn, good sirs,

All on a midsummer's morn!

Surely we sing of no little thing

In Oak and Ash and Thorn.

From Kipling, originally... But set to music by Peter Bellamy and sung by every (so it seems) group on the folk and Renaissance Fair circuits for the last 50 years.

Days 12 & 13 :: Dragon and Ash

Storytime: there was once a dragon flying over the sea. He spotted something that did not have the sense to flee. He swooped down, and before it could drown, he reduced it to ash, like so much trash. And then he went for a swim amongst the ashes floating upon the sea.

Four colours of Sharpie marker pens on the sketchbook paper. (98lb. paper. About 13x21cm.)

China.

Untreated, infested wood products were imported without enough inspection or oversight and that's all she wrote. The ash trees are no more.

I guess there is no such thing as a Chinese Ash tree then?

The Asian ash trees co-evolved with the Emerald Ash Borer and are semi-immune. In their native China the insects only infest aging, dying ash trees.

Inktober 14. Overgrown, Cursed Crown.

I got experimental again, not sure how well it worked out.

Day 14, "Cursed Crown."

This one requires some explanation.

So I have spent a lot of time at the Oriental Institute drawing things. I've also been studying ancient Mesopotamian culture as background for a project.

Lamashtu is a Sumerian / Akkadian demon, or rather evil god, who preys on infants, pregnant women, and children. She has the head of a lioness, the ears and teeth of a donkey (which look REALLY WRONG in a lioness' head) and a hairy body, her arms wound with snakes.

There are also these amazing Assyrian women's crowns that have been dug up, delicate confections of beaten gold leaves and flowers / rosettes and rings, often accompanied by scads and scads of beaded necklaces.

This confrontation is related to something in the project I'm working on, a queen who messes up an important ritual because she's too attached to her finery, and the curse it brings on her city and herself.

:ik_oops:

This is what can happen to a Truffula Grove if there’s no Lorax around to tend it.

(Also...I found some strange colors of Sharpie pens hiding in a box and I figured I would try them out.)

      AUGH! The Great Pumpkin Came!

This was my entry in a painting league at another  miniatures forum.

In reference to the longstanding Peanuts theme of Linus sitting alone in the Pumpkin Patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin to come bringing gifts, Santa Claus-style.

It's a pity for him that Halloween is all about the scary...and the Great Pumpkin probably is not a very nice being.

The miniatures are all by Reaper, the fences are from Mantic's Kings of War Vanguard terrain. I found the simplicity of the fences really helped to sell the story here. As one of the commenters in the LPL-post stated: "Less is more".

Lots more pics, but yah gotsa clicks!

Last year I painted Reaper's Halloween Knight with - I think - some success (you can check the mini on my Insta account, @albertnyarla); so I decided to start a tradition and pay hommage to my favourite festivity this year too.

Here I went with one of my favourite horror tropes, the Witch, with this fantastic Witch Coven by Reaper, under the "Tree of Despair" from Bones IV, with a couple hommages to good horror movies. Had to refrain myself to include even more references to avoid getting it too crowded.
Overall, I'm happy with the outcome. It will mean everything (if you like it) to give it a like and maybe a follow on Instagram, it really helps with motivation ^^
