Resilient Priest - So much magic OSL

How did you do the base?

 

The base is a resin one, I think by MicroArtStudios. Might be Secret Weapon. The rune in there is several millimeters deep - it was actually pretty tough to paint because of that! Looking straight down there are some yellows in there too.

 

I had the figure on a cork, pins in the feet, before putting it on the base. I actually did the glow from the bottom on the robes and pants before I did the rune! When the figure itself was done, I drilled into the base, popped the pins down, and tested the rune. I took the figure out a few times, and went back and forth with it on and off the base while getting the rune right. Then I finally glued him down. The stone has a few different grays in it to be more stone-like, and then I tried to shadow it heavily with Nightshade Purple. The brush is highlighted in grays for "moonlight". The red stones are garnets, because I'm a good geologist and have a tiny jar of tumbled garnets because uhh... reasons. Besides, Wee Jas is "the Ruby Witch" and garnets are classically mistaken for rubies. It seemed hilariously appropriate, since I don't have spare rubies around. The tufts were one or two larger tufts cut into smaller bits, then shoved in nooks and crannies.

 

I did most of this figure differently than usual. I tend to paint by region, but since this one was all OSL and has lots of black, I did it differently. I painted the face, and did a small bit of shading only. Then I base coated the whole thing. Kimera Black for the robes and boots I think, and Vallejo's Wolf Gray (I think?) - it is a slightly blue gray for the pants. The bird is mostly a violet-black. The hair went through a few phases (it looked hilariously bad for a while when I used a blue-black, and I switched it to Nightshade Purple to make it okay). Then I imagined the OSL as THE lighting. No imagining other light sources. The red one was first. I tried Reaper's Blood Red in thin glazes, but it had no oomph to it over the black. I didn't want to use not-black at this stage either. So I switched to the Kimera "The Red" and thinned it down with glaze and thinning medium (lots of thinning). I just did tons of glazes to get it done, and it popped sooooo nicely. I did one or two glazes of Kimera orange too, then back with the red, for some extra zing. The flame in the hand is also a Kimera blend of colors, then glazed on the upper left side. The last part was the moonlight, and I tried to do that rather lightly, mostly just using it to give depth to areas that weren't being lit from the side or from below with simple highlights.

Last night's game didn't see this one on the table, since we weren't playing at our usual location and the figure is fragile. I think I may end up just using it for the next session and telling the player to take it home afterward, because it is so delicate where the bird and hand are attached. Unless the fellows are really gentle with it, and they do tend to at least try. But we have a cramped table. Would be a shame to damage good work!

      This model is a Dark Sword Miniatures masterpiece of a sculpt by Jeff Grace. Never before have I seen so many tiny etchings on plate armor, especially on a figure that is barely 1.6 inches high. I feel a bit let down by my red OSL, but then again, this was only my second real attempt at the process, which is surely one I need to practice more.

      One of my recently finished miniatures, and my first attempt at doing some object source lighting.  Truth be told this was all a bit of an experiment and as such the ghost was very rushed (She was 100% drybrushed), most of my time and effort went into the base and trying to pull off a convincing OSL glow effect.  It is far from perfect, but for a first attempt I am fairly pleased with the result.

      This mini took forever to paint.  Not really because anything I did with him was all that challenging, but because once I did one thing I realized that more stuff was needed.  I couldn't figure out why the demon was holding a rock, so I decided it must be a spell effect.  I liked the crackly rocks of the base, but decided it must be cooling magma.  Then I decided that his base wasn't stable enough for his huge wingedness (the mini is metal and thus VERY top-heavy), so I extended it.  Then I dithered about whether to just paint the lava or apply a resin of some kind.  And on and on and on.
       
      Eventually I forced myself to be done.  Here he is :-)
      C&C appreciated as I've definitely never done this many techniques with one mini.  :-D

      This was my Secret Sophie gift to Inarah.  I had a lot of fun painting it, though I was cranky there wasn't much room to play with freehand!  Let's see... the crystals are a combination of sculpey, green stuff, sprue cut into crystal shapes and actual small quartz crystals. You can buy them cheap online in bulk. Great for terrain projects.  The colors are nightmare black, clouded sea and mint green, then after I was done highlighting, I glazed the whole thing except in the light effect area with pthalo green. It knocked down the highlights a bit and I like the more teal look it gives.  The fire was pure white, sun yellow, marigold yellow, fire red and spattered crimson. I think I used some Golden brand carbon black for the deep shadows.
       
      Anyway, enjoy!  I didn't do a lot of WIP stuff for this one, sorry! er, and my camera was dead so I had to use my phone.  The balance is always funky.
       







       
      I decided I wanted to work on OSL, so I planned ahead of time while painting the miniature. I find this helpful for OSL. I decide where I'll have the light effect and then up the highlighting on that side keeping in mind the spread and direction of the light.  Then when I add the colored effect, the highlighting is already done. I think where I see folks fall down on lighting is one of two things:  remembering that light is brightest at its source and lessens outwards, or thinking that light is color rather than brightness or higher value. Meaning  we have to highlight first before we add the light effect, or it just looks like paint, not light.  If you take a black and white photo of a mini, you should be able to see the light and effect is closer to white. If done incorrectly, the light effect will disappear.  You also have to darken shadows elsewhere to sell the effect. It becomes complicated, but in all honesty, you can do OSL with drybrushing, as long as you remember to highlight first!

      This was my main entry for the Painters category at 2019 ReaperCon. This figure was a long time resident of my shelf of shame. Originally intended for it to be an anniversary present for my parents in 2015 but I never got past base coating. For some reason it was just not clicking with me but I was determined to finish them this year. I made some changes to what I had planned and that finally worked. I originally planned on doing green and blue with a larger display base that was more a diorama.  After so many years, I determined the base was just not working and one time when I was looking at the base coats, I realized pink would be better than blue with the green. It ended up being perfect because my mother has some art work that these colors match perfectly. Once I got the base and colors figured out, finishing was a breeze.
