October 14: Do you remember names well after meeting people, and if so, do you have a method for memory you can share?

I am horrible with names. This is at least partly due to my lack of hearing...numbers & names are difficult for deaf folk.

For me there are only two names; i.e., Buddy & Sweetheart.

I'm usually pretty good with names. Better if the face is there to match with and best if there was a not-in-person conversation (email/phone) ahead of time.

A new person name will have to be repeated during conversation several times to stick and may not be retained if that person is not one who will be interacted with regularly.

I am not very good at recognizing people in general until I've interacted with them multiple times.  Even then, I tend to rely on certain things for many more times (clothing, hair color, location, that sort of thing).  If that context is missing, I won't recognize people.

This said, if I recognize you, I will probably remember your name.  Probably.

My memory is generally very good. (It's hard to be an effective pedant without a good memory. ) But I have something of a blind spot for peoples names. Though if I have a first name or last name I can usually come up with the other of those.

The only thing that works at all for me is to see names in writing with a picture of the person, and even then I have to make a very concerted effort.

Remember names mostly, associate them with the correct person, not so much. I have worked most of my live in high turn over jobs, then I worked in the school system............ Neither is great for trying to remember people's names. That said there is a core if people here that I know by their forum name and it their real name.... They are interchangeable....... I may refer to you as Fred, or your forum name, Jules the car thief, both in the same sentence. Most names I get right are names and people I have known awhile.... Again several on the forums fit that bill. Some I only know by their forum name, but I remember their face when I reference them. I still refer to people as bub, dude, pal, buddy, honey, my dear, mostly because the people u interact with the most I have no name for. I work at a retail store in a small town that did not grow up in.... I know a lot if the people, but their name never comes up in conversation. Some I learn by listening, bit others never come up.

Not at all!  I think I forget people’s names before they’ve even finished saying it.  It’s like they just don’t get recorded.  I never remember to use tricks to help me remember either.  I’m pretty good if I’ve seen their name written before meeting them, and also much better at remembering faces, but that’s probably true for everyone.

I'm very good at recalling names, really! All I have to do is look at my wife, and the next time she speaks to a person, I will know that person's name.

Note, this only works if you marry someone who is good at recalling names and knows the cue to say someone's name out loud in order to remind you.

When I'm in social situations without her, I'm much more likely to just avoid names, and then later I'll say to her, "oh, I saw someone today, they said to tell you hi. It's the guy with glasses and blonde hair that we met at the workshop in Brooklyn two years ago and then you worked on a show with him six months ago?"

I will remember a name about half of the time.  If I meet someone and spend time together I will remember the name for a few hours or days.  I try to associate the name with something to help it stick, but I am better at remembering the associative word than the name.  I can remember much easier if there is a name badge, the written name sticks better than the verbal name.  I had a stroke about 10 years ago and sometimes words get lost in my brain.

Unfortunately, no. I truly wish I did, but it takes me a while. My poor wife just goes into overdrive eyeball roll when I founder...

*laughs nervously for several seconds* No.  I'm terrible with names, especially since whatever happened on March 5th of this year.  I usually will remember faces, though I'll spend half an hour afterwards trying to figure out just who they are...

If it's someone I regularly deal with, I can typically get their name down pat after a few times, usually relying on brute force of saying their name repeatedly...  I suspect I have other techniques for such as well, but I haven't had coffee yet so can't really think of them.

When I was in college and worked in the dorms, I had to be decent at remembering names, and the bosses expected you to know 40-50 people within 48 hours of meeting them. Having a face to go with the name always helps, but I always had to search for something else about them to go with it, especially when you meet people with the same name.

I had a girl whose family owned an orchard and brought caramel apples to help make friends, thus Caramel Apple Katie was dubbed, who was not to be confused with Big Eyes Katie (not meant in a mean way, she just had very prominent doe-eyes). I also had a set of identical twins who were roommates, but quickly worked out that one smiled more than the other, so that helped.

Granted, all of that required actually learning something about them besides their name. I don't think I could remember names if I was just walked down a line of people, shaking hands and being introduced one after another.

I do not, although after meeting many people over many years, I don't think I am all that much worse than human average. I have met people who have a spooky capacity for matching names to faces, but I am definitely not among them.

Sadly, I do not have any useful techniques to share.

No, I also cannot remember what they look like. If I remember them at all it will either be their voice or the sound of them walking.

I remember faces better. Sometimes a name will stick to the face, but... heh, it's not always the /right/ name, as anyone who remembers my first Reapercon might recall. ;p
