October 15: Have you any phobias?

(This question inspired by various reactions to a certain spider being unlocked right now.)

Yup, not strictly claustrophobic, I’m very happy in a small space, but start crowding in lots of people and I will panic. Elevators and overcrowded trains in Japan were extremely unfun for me.

Unfortunate needle story:

  Hide contents

I've always known I had difficult veins. They're very flat. Usually when I donate blood whichever intern who's assigned to me tries to hand me off to the most experienced phlebotomist and then I get three interns all watching while the head works. I'm used to it.

But the issue reared its ugly head when I had surgery in August. I had an IV placed with barely acceptable placement in my left hand. I woke up after surgery with a second IV placed in my right hand, much better placement. I know how well/poorly they were placed because the one in my left hand had collapsed within 6 hours, the one in my right lasted 16 hours. The collapses were discovered during two separate failed attempts to push medication through them that left me screaming more than the surgical pain ever managed. I had two different nurses giving me the same confused expression each time. "This shouldn't hurt, why is this hurting? It doesn't look like the vein is blown. Why is the vein collapsed? I don't understand."

I had to explain each time. I am the phlebotomist's Hard Mode. I suffered a total venous collapse as a kid. My veins are all flat and they will all collapse around an IV line. When I explained exactly why I went into venous collapse (I was colonized by amoebas) I had one nurse actually shout "And you're still alive?!"

<_< Just... <_< Also  But mostly <_<

I hate it when they don’t listen. I get that there’s a fair number of hypochondriacs out there (apparently) but we live in our bodies. We know what we’re talking about.

Super spoilery needle stuff:

My father had a similar experience.  He was hospitalized for a few days recently and was NPO for most of it.  He was on IV for hydration and antibiotics, but his veins kept collapsing and he was getting pretty dehydrated.  The nurse kept trying, going to different veins, and then escalating to more experienced nurses for about an hour.  My dad’s not a complainer and didn’t say much.  They finally called in a nurse from the ER who placed the IV in less than a minute.  The next time his vein collapsed the nurse said she thought she could do it, but we told her we’d wait for ER guy to come back.

How do you hide stuff in a post, by the way?

edit: Thanks!

I've noticed seasoned nurses seem to like me because of this knowledge - I only ask two favours.  (spoiled for more needle talk)

Let me relax for at least a few seconds, and don't tell me when you're poking.  Every time, I wind up doing two things: letting them get in the first time a pretty good percentage of the time, and secondly, it gives me a moment to relax that arm, and when the poke does happen it lets me focus on tensing up the other arm!

It didn't really help the first time I was in the hospital earlier this year, but boy it sure helped the second time! (first time I was, well, it's hard to relax muscles your body isn't letting you control...  Ow, that one hurt worse than an intern missing three times back to back)

If you're on mobile use square brackets and put "spoiler" in the first (where you want the spoiler to start), and then "/spoiler" in the second (where you want it to end).... Obviously without quotation marks.

I'm working on a few things, but the current "sort of priority" is my HaqqIslam starter set that came in the Operation: Red Veil boxed set.

^Disassembled guy is actually assembled now, but I can't exactly take a pic of that at this moment.

There's also two minotaurs I need to take pics of due to progress, several CAVs, and even some BattleMechs on the table too, although the mechs are still in their blisters...  But not for too too long!

EDIT: Okay fine.  Night mode pics so I don't have to try and deal with harsh reflections from the lights this early in the morning...

^Infinity HaqqIslam guys (2x Ghulam, 1x Khawarij, 1x Fasid) and Oathsworn's Minotaur from the Heroines In Sensible Shoes line

^77013 Minotaur from Reaper.

I'll take better pics when I get home after work and am actually fully awake, but odds are they'll be posted to their respective threads since most of those threads could use a bit of an update ^_^;;;;

Quilts, mostly.  This one is for me:DSCN1225.jpg.9acaf11ac1ef48c06390a2934fa6969e.jpg

This will also be mine, each block is a different color:

Cosmetic zip pouches for christmas gifts.  Holy fork, running out of time on those!

Quilts of Valor blocks for the local guild.

I squeeze in painting when I can, but don't have WIP shots today.

That's easy : NOTHING! (because something came up)

Technically, I should be spending my free time adulting and searching for a new job for 2020. But even that isn't on the top of my list.

Baba Yaga's house. Have an idea for a Halloween diorama with it as the center piece. Having motivational issues so not sure I'll finish on time or not. Pics later if I get a chance.
