October 15: Have you any phobias?

(This question inspired by various reactions to a certain spider being unlocked right now.)

No.

I do have a healthy respect for venomous creatures and  a dislike of aracnids in my personal space.

I don't have any phobias that I know of, but I definitely have been spooked by snakes (funny what happens when one decides to brush their tongue along your ear and you're three quarters asleep...) as well as tiny little jumping sliders (the lil bugger was on one of the screws on my computer case, and WAVED to me - of course when he was out of the corner of my eye, and was black and yellow and I'd never seen such before).

Crowds/Confinement.  I have OCD, and crowds really trigger it.  If a crowd gets too close and I have no way out, I get somewhat irrational.  I tend to avoid really crowded situations like the state fair or Christmas mall shopping. This carries over to other situations where I have no immediate control over my situation or obvious escape route, such as escape room games and MRIs that lock my head in place.  Airplanes get close to triggering me, but looking out the window typically stops it.

Phobias? No. (Assuming we're not including jump scares, since those are about surprise, not so much whatever is causing it.)

I've been creeped out in very narrow caves (and similar spaces), I don't much care for jellyfish or cockroaches, and gore makes me unhappy, but I wouldn't characterize any of those as so strong or irrational as to be a phobia.

I don't like being startled or bitten, but creepy crawlies don't actually bother me beyond that.

I'm not fond of tight spaces particularly (I'm a big guy) but not so much in a fear way, I just like my space to move and I worry about breaking stuff when I'm crowded.

And I'm not overly comfortable with crowds, which seems to be getting worse as I get older, but I can tolerate them and even enjoy events once I'm there. It just takes some work to convince myself to go.

Now heights, for me that might get into phobia territory.  I have a fairly severe physical reaction to heights.  tightness in the chest, increased bp, etc.  I don't even like seeing other people near heights.  Watching a go pro video of someone base jumping will make my chest tighten up.

So of course my new job is in a 12 story building  with a "feature staircase" open the entire height of the building, with freaking glass panels all around the opening.  And the main meeting room on each floor has a floor to ceiling glass wall overlooking this pit of death.

So I can walk up the stairs to the 2nd floor, where I work (luckily).  And I can take the stairs to the 3rd floor as long as I focus and don't look to the sides (at least the outside of the stairs is a solid wood panel).  But that is it.  I can't get within 5 feet of the edge of the opening.  And even when I come out of the elevators and have to walk past the seating areas they have by the opening on each floor, I need to at least touch the wall to "ground" myself, and walk as far as I can from the open area.  We have a lovely open air patio on the 5th floor off of the cafe.  At least I'm told it is lovely.  It looks nice from the cafe anyway.....

I used to be irrationally afraid of heights and slugs.  For heights, I was particularly afraid of situations where I might accidentally fall.  "What might happen if the railing here on the second floor of the shopping mall (much less the third) were to give way?"  So I spent a fair period of my adolescence either avoiding the mall or staying as far away from the railings as I could.  Windows were fine.

These days, I still dislike slugs.  Concerns over shopping mall railings have been replaced by "How do I get into the mall and get out with the least amount of stress?" and "Why do these people keep stopping right in front of me?"

Catching up here...

Favorite morning smell: Hands down it's coffee.

Favorite weekend breakfast: 3 egg omelet stuffed with cheese and whatever leftovers I have from the previous evening's meal. Unfortunately, this weekend that was chili. While it is possible to stuff an omelet with chili, it is messy and didn't turn out very pretty. Tasted great though.

Remembering names: Absolutely terrible at it. And I can only usually remember first names after repeated exposure to them. Last summer I had 3 interns who all looked vaguely the same and all had names that started with M. I don't think I ever got them straightened out. But they were cool enough not to call me out on it too often. Also, I currently have 5 friends named Sara(h). Since I can't get last names to stick in my head I started giving them descriptors like Insect Sara and Gaming Sara. That became too confusing so I just gave up and now refer to them all as Short Sara. This means that when my wife says Sara is coming by I always get a little surprise as to who it is when they show up.

Phobias: None that I'm aware of.

I don't think so.

There's things I seriously dislike (heights, crowds, people, spiderwebs) and some of them can bring on panic attacks (definitely crowds and people) but I think they're still a long way from full-blown phobias.

I have a healthy fear of dangerous situations, but nothing that makes me scream or go all irrational.   I have a slight phobia against needles, I can't watch them being used (on tv or on myself) and just talking about it with the doctor got me twitching and shaking.  I absolutely refuse to self-administer, and I've been known to pass out during a blood draw.

I have nightmares about airplane crashes.  I don't have any issue flying, though.  But, I cannot watch scary scenes with flight turbulence or plane crashes on tv or in movies.   We went to see Flight years ago, DH assured me it was a drama with no plane crash scenes.... I nearly had to leave the theater.
