October 18: Have you ever experienced VR (virtual reality) or AR (augmented reality)?

Weekend Quest:

October 19-20: Try something new then tell us about it, or better yet show us.

Haven't tried VR yet, although I know some folks with headsets.  I'm not sure how it would handle my wonky eyes....

I've played a number of AR phone games, if they count.  Ingress, Pokemon Go, tried out the Wizards Unite one.

Not sure how much time I'll have to try anything new this weekend.  Mostly will be the same old thing, packing, packing, packing.

VR: Not interested unless it's a full-motion simulator. Simulator sickness is very much a thing for me.

AR: PoGo is as far as I've gone. If the game were better (and the company less slimy about trying harvest data), I'd still be playing it.

VR: No, but I'd be interested in checking it out.

AR: Sort of? Back in the early 90s I was at a Grateful Dead show. I was sitting on my blanket on the lawn of the amphitheater enjoying the music when a guy sits down next to me and puts these weird looking glasses on wired to some sort of box. After a while I asked him what was up and he said he was a psychologist who was experimenting using music and lights to treat his patients (I may have that wrong but we are talking about information obtained at a Dead show here). Turned out the glasses had these little lights on the inside of the lenses that could flash patterns on your eyelids in time to the music you were listening to. He let me check it out for a few songs and it was kind of neat. Didn't really match up completely with the show, but it was good enough to be enjoyable. Also, POGO for about a week before I got bored with it.

October 17: How long is you hair?

About... 1cm.

It used to go down between my shoulder blades. I miss it.

Yes and yes. There was a VR music saber game that was a ton of fun, and I used to play Ingress.

When I played Pokemon Go for a bit I used the AR. It was kinda cool but I eventually turned it off.

My husband and I have a VR set up. He uses it for fishing when there's not enough time after work to drive out and I use it for boxing because real boxing would badly injure me. We both play Skyrim on it. There's also a 3-D drawing program called Tilt Brush that I play for the sheer joy of creating. No other eyes, no expectations. Just myself and the brush. :)

Oh! If any of you have played Slime Rancher (I highly encourage it, that game dispels my depression every time I boot it up), definitely find a friend with a VR system and play with the mini VR Slime Rancher!! Soooo cuuuuuuute.

Weekend Quest.... Hmmm.... That will likely be my homework unless I finish it early and get to do other things. I've never used pastels and real sepia pencils before :D

Facial hair 1" Top of the head about 2".  Before I started to work at a hospital I would regularly go from 1" to 18" for every haircut but that was just over 30 years ago.  I have a picture that I like that someone took of me competing in a boomerang tournament.  I call it my Rastafarian Boomeranger picture.  I just threw and my curls stuck out perpendicular to the ground.  Not quite three feet.

VR yes AR no.

I've used my best friend's VR headset for a few games, and it was interesting. It was certainly something to be able to be in an x-wing and look around the entire cockpit to the R2 unit in the back.

Yes.  Hubby has an HTC Vive, and we eventually plan on upgrading it.  First gen of the new stuff (aka the 2010+ stuff) has its limits but a powerful enough rig is great for immersion.  I plan on getting my own headset at some point, but for seated immersion.  I just need to figure out where I'd put an RSeat in our living room AND how I'd isolate the vibrations from the steering wheel.

Yup, I like it so much more than running Nvidia Surround...

As for Augmented Reality, once headsets become a lot cheaper I'll look into it.  Right now the Holo is way too expensive for my taste, and mobile stuff is more of a gimmick than anything handy - well, minus Google Maps AR, which I helped beta test due to being a local guide.  So. Insanely. Handy.

I'll be painting Corvus Belli miniatures for the first time, that counts right?

Not yet. I have issues with Actual Reality.

But, but... They were one of the only laser tag companies to have a grenade mode on their guns! ... And bases.... And didn't heavily use smoke like Laser Quest does...

Couldn't resist, we used to have an Actual Reality in town, oddly enough in West Edmonton Mall's GalaxyLand of all places...  For a while they had a wall of Sega Genesis consoles too... ^_^

VR: I was a big fan of nvidia's 3dvision back in the day. I haven't jumped onto VR yet because it's still a bit new, technology-wise (needs to improve a bit more, the Index was a solid entry, so it's moving apace) and content-wise (most of the good games are mods for old games like Skyrim, most of the new stuff is gimmicky); and my computer is too old, despite being a well-built gaming rig.

I have a friend that's way into VR and a techie, so I stay up on the state of the tech. He was struggling with a 1080 (I have a 970), and recently he got a 2080 Super that has helped a bit - but VR still wants more, and resolution is still low, so I extrapolate out a solid 5 years or so before I'll likely get into it. Barring a windfall or giant tech step forward (both, really!).

My new thing this weekend is starting my new class (Hi @Morihalda, I see your Patrick Jones abstractions up there! Awesome!). I'm doing head fundamentals, so it's abstrscted skulls today, fairly easy stuff at this point. Mostly working on my features placement a bit to clean up some weak spots (getting the near eye in 3/4 view in the right spot has given me a lot of trouble), here's an example from the head class I took in the spring:

Our friends just got a VR rig about a month ago. I've only got to play it once, but I really enjoyed Beat Saber. Even though I was already exhausted from walking around the city all day, they still had to drag me off of it to go home to bed. They're thinking about getting knuckles that you can use to pick up and grab things seamlessly in VR, seems pretty neat, but most of the games that support it look too violent for my tastes.

Me and the hubs are consistent since launch Pokemon Go players, and some of our friends got back into it about six months ago. My current phone doesn't even support the AR photo mode, but of course the whole game is really AR. It's far from perfect in game design, relies too much on fear of missing out and randomness. Still, it was a nudging factor in lots of fun outings, from going to the waterfront or the botanical gardens once a month for Community Day, to exploring Manhattan by myself when the game first came out, to finally taking that weekend in Montreal as a couple we'd wanted for years because of a ticketed Go event there last month. It's a big reason I have more fond memories of it than any other mobile game I've played... Though the Pokemon nostalgia is, of course, what keeps me from going to other AR games.

I’ve never tried the VR thing. And the only time I’ve done the AR thing has been in my phone. With Pokémon go it’s just annoying. And with the star chart apps I tried it was obnoxious. Like, I just want to move the sky around and find out which planet that was, not wander around waving my phone around like a deranged madwoman. Annoying.
