October 17: How long is your hair?

Too short to bother measuring (?)

Zero millimeters and staying that way in [a few] places.

Too long in some annoying places (where zero mm would be preferable).

No XP with such gadgetry.

Might be able to find a new (to me) chow experience / eatery.

Not sure if I could manage some new form of “..Arting..” but I could look into that.

@Morihalda calls it Arting.  By the way, the Inktober—Drawollween thread is over here.

No.  A friend of mine from grad school dropped 5 figures on a VR set a few years back, but he literally lives on the other side of the world now so I never got the chance to try it.

I did a VR experience at VOID by Disneyland last year.  My wife, kid and I were kitted out with headsets and haptic harnesses, and played rebel scum disguised as stormtroopers infiltrating an Imperial base.  It cost about $40 each for about 30m I think , but was really an amazing experience.  Incredibly immersive.  I’ve also played Beat Saber on my niece’s PS4VR.

Never done any AR stuff, unless you count the pretty cool iOS measure app.

Have to think about the weekend quest ... does zenithal priming count?  Because I’m probably going to do that to one Demogorgon (and maybe a few other things while I’m at it).

I have not. Closest I came to it was back in university in the 90s where they were demoing Doom (or Doom 2) in VR (yes, it's been around that long).

Of course, wearing eyeglasses with a strong prescription, I am always unsure at how the helm would fit.

Maybe I'll add a different blend of spices to my turkey?

VR/AR... I mean..technically Pokemon Go is AR...so yes? (i rarely use it, mostly the AR is good for being able to walk right up to bosses and smash them in the face with excellent throws) And beatsaber is VR..so..

Last time I tried something new the casualties list was enormous

Prescription inserts can help with that.  It's what hubby uses for his headset.  Of course, it's another $150 CAD or so once you factor in shipping and euro to Canadian dollars, but... Worth it if you're serious about VR and need prescription eyewear.

How does VR handle depth and 3D vision? Because I don't see 3D the same way other people do, my brain doesn't recombine images as part of final processing so I see two of everything. The standard 'polarized light to make things look close' looks foreign and fake to me with less subtlety than a pop-up book.

Hmmm ... That’s an interesting question.  Do you mean you don’t see 3D films the same as others, or you don’t see 3D stuff in the real world the same way?

With a VR headset, each eye sees a completely separate image.  It’s not at all like polarized 3D glasses.  With those I feel like I have to work to see a 3 dimensional image, which can be entertaining, but isn’t really convincing.  With a good VR rig, it’s very convincing.  It’s easy to forget you’re looking at 2 little screens in front of your eyes.  My guess is that for you it would be a lot more like looking at real 3D stuff than like a 3D movie with polarized glasses.

Both, actually. I have to assume other people don't see 3D movies as the same fake that I do otherwise people wouldn't pay that much for it ::P: I also see RL as very different from most people. When I shot in the Girl Scouts (bow, air rifle, bb, then rifle) my method of aiming would involve a quick series of SO MUCH TRIGONOMETRY, essentially mathing my way through as I aimed my weapon at the empty space between the twin targets in my field of view. I was good enough to earn the requisite badges and a couple of small "best in camp" medals. Because when I focused at the end of my weapon I'd see one weapon and two targets. When I focused at the target I'd see one target and two weapons. I could change that focus all the way along down the weapon as a way of mapping and mathing out where exactly my weapon was in space then do the same for the target then triangulate then fire. It took twice to three times as long versus someone else and I had to ignore everything the shooting coaches said but I managed well enough.

Still not sure if VR would work. The angle of everything in space is different and I see those angles so very clearly. It's how I paint. If the separate images in VR don't replicate those angles right it looks fake. It can be done, I've seen some good 3D of the red/blue variety.

Heh. Polarized light 3D has not yet matched the skill of cheesy 1950s monster movie red/blue 3D

My old Nintendo 3DS came with some basic AR games, that's about as much as I've done with that sort of tech.

AR: Pokemon Go counts, so yeah? Also there's a local theater company that specializes in "AR experiences," basically very immersive environments that represent something that might be going on in reality but you'd never notice... Kinda like the next evolution of murder mystery theater. The most recent one cast the audience as people attending a big tech company's latest product launch, which happened to be an AI Android... Over the course of the evening, the audience could uncover all the ways the CEO and others at the company were corrupt, it was possible to trigger an AI self-consciousness emergence, etc. Pretty cool.

VR: I have a friend who picked up a VR set, it's pretty cool. I think it's super impressive.

... Snip...

If the separate images in VR don't replicate those angles right it looks fake.

I had similar worries about VR going in. It sounds like my visual state isn't as severe as you described, but similar. I have a slightly "lazy" eye that centers itself close to my nose. Normally not an issue as when I concentrate, I can pull that eye outward enough to get single vision, and the closer an object is the less I need to work to focus on it, but generally if I'm casually looking at something more than five feet away, I'm probably looking at two of it.

I can't use binoculars without a lot of pain, because my right eye isn't looking down the center of the tube, so I usually see a clear circular image through the left lens and a waxing crescent through the right. Because there's so little visual information surrounding the thing the binoculars are pointed at, my brain can't fudge the angles, and I become very aware that my eyes aren't pointed the same direction. Trying to shift my right eye enough to compensate gives me a terrible headache (really it's like a charlie horse just behind my eyeball, because it's due to muscular tension).

I was worried VR would be the same way, but the headset my friend has is very adjustable, so the two screens can be set at different angles (unlike binoculars, where even if the tubes wouldn't get in each other's way, a few degrees difference at my eyes would result in completely different targets, because geometry). In some ways, I have better vision in VR than I do in real reality. It's still not perfect, but it works well enough that a half hour of use was fun and didn't result in a tension headache!

VR makes me horribly Horribly motion sick. I never want to experience it again.

Most people see something similar to that. But for people with typical eye dominance, one of those images will mostly be discarded by the brain. It's still available if you concentrate on it, but not otherwise. I'm right-eye dominant, so by default I'll use the images from the right eye for sight alignment. With concentration, I can instead use the left-eye images instead (confirmed by closing the right eye), but it feels wrong.

One of the things many shooting coaches will tell you is to keep both eyes open when you shoot, but if your brain isn't picking a preferred image, I wonder whether closing an eye might not work better in your specific case.
