October 2: What is your favorite gemstone (precious, semi-precious, or otherwise) and why?

(Multiple choices are welcome, mostly because I won't be able to keep it to just one.)

I think if I had to pick a favourite based on "ooh, pretty", I'd go with opal. I'm always drawn to them and I have a few opal rings that I'm very fond of.

However, I will forever have a soft spot in my heart for pyrite. When I was a child, my grandparents moved to Durango, Colorado, and on visits we would go various places including Silverton, CO and there was a gold mining place - I just googled and I'm almost positive it was the Old Hundred Gold Mine and at the end of the tour they let you pan for precious metals. I don't recall if it was at the mine where they sold it or if it was just elsewhere that we bought it, but we'd buy chunks of pyrite, aka fool's gold, as souvenirs and so it makes me think of those trips and my grandparents who have been gone for some time.

Until @Inarahposted, I would have said my swirl blue with red dots...

Local game shop does a d6 in honor of the shop cat.  The "6" is a cat face, the "1" is the other end of the cat.

I HAVE to find these!

I just emailed them to get some!

During gameplay, I use Speckled Golden Recon by Chessex. They're green with black speckles and gold numbers. I own four sets, only dice I use when getting my RPG on.

However, purely for rolling stats, I use four d6 Speckled Fire dice also by Chessex. Orange dice with yellow speckles and black numbers. They roll hot. Not sure where I got them, but clearly they were forged in the fires of some volcano.

Half black, half pearlescent white with gold numbers. They're the Yin Yang Halfsies Dice from Gatekeeper games and I lurve them. A google search will turn up images.

Don't know, I've got a bunch of d6s I like, a doge die, a steiner die, a davion die, a giant brick of old rackham dice with dragons on the 6, red blok dice, some vac metal d6s and more.

Don't really have any other die types I really like.

Currently, Chessex Borealis Nebula Nocturnal

The picture doesn't really do them justice. Inside the purple is swirled & such. Oddly my d6 is only half filled but it has the swirl so it makes for a unique looking dice for the set. These glow in the dark but I've yet to really look at that feature.

They are a reminder of my trip with my wife to Eugene this year.

Shiny. *sage nod*

I have a LOT OF DICE. I suspect there are people who have more dice than I do, but... let's just say it's unusual for me to come home from a convention without at least a few, they're a fairly cheap souvenir..

My favs might be my tigers eye Dwarven Stone dice, but they do have a lot of competition.

I'm rather fond of my Chessex Borealis dice; I have several different colours. My favs out of that set might be the royal purple...

Didn't Tolkien say in one of his letters that the lost Silmarils would remain lost until The Dagor Dagorath, after which Feanor would be released from the Halls of Awaiting and deliver them to Yavanna? She would then sunder all three Silmarils and thus Laurelin and Telperion will be reborn bathing all things in their light. I may be misremembering though.

I think you’re right.

A set of chessex dice that are all shimmery purple with silver numbers. They served me well on one of my favorite characters. I never had to hurl away a die in frustration because the danged thing kept failing on me.

I have a different set for each character, game and/or army.  So my favorite set depends on what i'm playing.

So do I, or at least I try to. I have one set that’s been relegated to a “Santa’s coal” baggy, because it just would not stop failing me.

I am pretty sure I had favorite dice, but not having seen or used them in more than two decades leaves little idea of what they looked like.

N.B.: no sad faces; re, I don't miss gaming at all.

Are you baiting me? Really? Oh boy. How short should I attempt to keep this... uh oh.

My favorite hexagonal mineral is beryl, obviously. That's my research topic after all. No seriously - I have data on dozens of them for one project, and then my other project is exploring for them. Beryl = emerald, aquamarine, heliodor, morganite, goshenite, red beryl, and maxixe (but no one really cares about maxixes). The reds are my specialty more than the others, but I've been playing with crystallography on them. FUN FUN.

My favorite trigonal mineral (ok, that's a subset of hexagonal... whatever) is tourmaline because it is a beautiful trashcan. Check out elbaite, Paraibas, and liddicoatite varieties. **makes various happy sounds** **swoons**

My favorite cubic one is garnet. I love garnets. They can be d12s or d24s! And tsavorites are such a delightful set of greens! Mmm and hessonites? Beautiful peachy oranges.

My favorite monoclinic gem is probably tanzanite. It has such delightful usually-violet blades.

My favorite orthorhombic one is chrysoberyl. It includes alexandrite! Alexandrite changes color depending on what light spectrum hits it!

My favorite triclinic mineral is labradorite probably. It has labradorescence! Super pretty type of sorta iridescence. It also looks rad under a microscope.

My favorite tetragonal mineral? Also a tough one. I'm going to go with zircon, because it can be super pretty, it can be ugly, but it is also the oldest known Earth-derived mineral we've found. It is so useful for geochronology that it has extra beauty by its usefulness.

There. I found a way to give only 7 favorites. Hah.

I have 2 right now. My translucent rainbow layered and the 'flourite' layered (not gemstone, plastic, but the colors resemble the stone and I don't have to worry about chipping them). They are both from Tabletop Loot who are only a couple of hours away from me. And apparently are having a sale this weekend. Uh oh...

I'm gonna add these set as well:

Chessex Marble Oxi-Green

chessex-chx-27403-marble-oxi-copper-w-wh

These dice look like stone but are of course Chessex plastic. Love em!

Chessex Festive Sunburst

Festive_Sunburst_Dice_2_grande.jpg?v=155

From a DM perspective, the above dice are magical but from a dice fan/player I love the color. My players have dubbed them "creamsicle dice"

Oddly all 4 of these dice are my latest dice purchases. Love rpg dice!
