Since all these women are going to have roughly the same proportions my next step is to create a mannequin that I can play with poses with.

Smaller shoulders, large breasts, and wider hips. I want the arms to be thin and the legs to be long. You can make a model out of straight ZSpheres or modify the existing "mannequin" that comes pre loaded in ZBrush. I used to make a new ZSphere rig with every sculpt but I've switched to modifying the mannequin since then because the connections on the mannequin taper towards the joints and I'm better able to overlap them for difficult poses. 

So, after playing around with this rig for most of the morning I came up with five poses I think are the strongest of my ideas.

I show this image to my art director and get some feedback. I want to know which ones he thinks are working well and wants me to move forward with. In this case he loved them all and wants to go ahead and produce all of them! YAY! We want to make them very beautiful and exaggerate their features quite a bit. My inspirations for achieving this delicate balance of sexy and innocent/cute are Dean Yeagle (Mandy) and Paris Christou (Cherry).

I'll start working on heads and expressions from here.

They’re looking great - I love the finned ears!  You’ve struck a great balance between cute/innocent and sexy.  They look like naughty Disney characters.  The expressions sketches are great too.

 

You did all of the 3D modeling so far today?  I have no idea how sculpting software works, but I never would have guessed you can do so much so quickly.

 

Thanks for sharing your process!  I love behind the scenes content, so it’s a real treat for me to see yours for miniatures.

I'm glad I hit my goal in style/design direction on these. Thanks for that comment!

 

I did all the work this far in a day. Typically a normal character mini would take me two days. That fluctuates depending on scale, how familiar I am with the subject matter, and complexity. Whether I'm doing the design work or working from someone else's concept art can also vary production time. 

Since these ladies are not going to have lots of clothes and accessories and weapons they will go much quicker. I'm also able to reuse the same ZSphere rig which makes the starting point much faster and altar one or two heads so there's enough variety and similarity between them. 

 

Me and Andy (@Talespinner) have discussed at length where it's beneficial to utilize the time saving capabilities of digital sculpting and when it's better to do things the longer way for best effect. It's still something that heavily debated and subjectively decided but I like where I'm at on that topic. I don't think my finished pieces look "too digital" but I'm also able to produce at a speed somewhere in the middle as far as professional sculptors go.
