New morning and fresh eyes I finished cleaning up most of the anatomy on this one (she doesn't have hands/feet yet). I got the head sculpted and attached last night.

As I started rendering things out I realized a few problems that needed to be resolved. 1: There's a casting issue between her right arm and her body and that gap needs to be filled. 2: Trying to find something to cover her private areas was proving difficult. I attempted several solutions to resolve this.

I added a wave that splashed around her and the rock however this solution didn't resolve the casting issue and was going to be difficult to render. It also didn't match the water patterns I had going with the other two figures and would make them less cohesive as a group. So I did some more brainstorming and came up with a way to use the hair to both resolve the coverage issue AND the casting issue...SCORE!

The only issue I see left with this solution is that it does leave one breast uncovered. (covering both of them would really weigh down the figure and lose the momentum of eye flow throughout the composition) and that was against our initial guidelines for the project. So I run this version by the art director to get some feedback. Result: The hair solution is good, the exposed breast isn't an issue, but the face looks too pained in this iteration and we decided to try closing her eyes and playing more with the angle of the head to convey more of the intended action.

Off I go! I'll make these edits and finish rendering out the figure. If all goes well this one should be finished up today!

One of the major changes we wanted to do was to close the eyes, reposition the eyebrows, and do some touch ups on the face. So I went back to my head file and made those changes.

After the changes were approved I attached the new head to the body, posed and added hands, and set to rendering. Fast forward hours of being nit picky with details and adding some rippled water to the base and here she is!

I've been thinking of these as both their own individual compositions but also how they will look together as a set. If you remember the original group shot image with the posed dollies....

^That One^

I'll be updating that image by replacing the dolly placeholders with finished sculpts and checking throughout this process to make sure that they are all flowing well together and working as a unified set.

Here's where we're at on that front as of now:

I was an idiot and didn't save the file i was working on for the first nereid. It's also been too long and doesn't show up in the quicksave files so.....I pulled up the picture I took of her finished and resculpted everything to match as much as possible UGH! Word of wisdom: Save and save often.

Now that I'm all caught up, i'll take a dinner break and then get started on the next one this evening.

I like the gill slits on the sides of the ribs. Perfect placement for them in a humanoid.  Usually artists put them on the neck, which when you think about makes little sense.  This way the water passes through what in humans is the lung cavity, but in these would be modified to gills and exits on their sides.  Nice design element.

THANKS!

Okay, so here's where I started at the beginning of the day

Here's the long haired solution we are moving forward with:

That second link requires me to log in, I do not have an account for imgur.

With Postimages that will not be necessary, just so you know.

I could see all without a problem.

The final image for the third neried is my favorite so far.

HAHA Well I'm glad you approve. The inner anatomical structure of the creature was not really part of my thought process but I'm glad it passes that test.
I wanted a subtle element I could include on all the figures. The neck is covered on many of them by hair and as I'm exaggerating feminine features for them the neck is smaller/thinner as it is. Having them on the neck would not make much sense design wise and there just happened to be a nice open space I wasn't doing anything with on the side of the ribcage. Since it mimicked the shape/direction of ribs it blended in but is hopefully "off" just enough to cause some uneasiness.

Awesome!! Thanks for letting me know.

Here's what I managed to get done after dinner last night for the 4th Nereid:

404569768_WIP1.thumb.JPG.d5e11ab288a5f4af3174cf5731343b74.JPG

I'm really happy with how wet and drippy the hair is looking at this point and I want to keep that design element. I'm having some trouble figuring out how to make it easily castable so I'm consulting with a mold maker to help me figure out what can/needs to be changed to accommodate for casting issues.

This one is going to have a fishnet draped around her waist like a sarong but I want to keep it loose and unkempt/unintentional looking.

So, i'll be working on this one for most or all of today. I'll post updates this evening!

Hi there all, I've decided to dive into the deep end with finally trying the scary world of OSL. 😄

Feel I've lost the plot on this ... so any advice on how to proceed with this would be greatly appreciated! (Having fun, though, despite not knowing what the hell I'm doing. 😁)

I'm including a "top down" view, which is where I'm most confuddled. That dark line down his arm which represents the shadow from the staff which sits between the source of light ... it just doesn't look right to me.  🤔

So, I'm all ears for suggestions on improvements!

      Hello

This is my first post really on forums.  I normally post on Facebook. My wife and I paint models alot of the time side by side. Whilst I prep our quarterly contest entry we worked on these Storm Giants...  About half way done.

Most of these aren't up to date and I've changed bits of them here and there since these, I'll be saving those shots for the finished product, but hopefully you enjoy the journey.
