The resins vary.  The Phrozen Castable Wax-like resin isn't worth a dime.  It leaves too much ash in the mold and you get a lot of pitting in the silver.

I have been using (and just printed a plate last night) BluCast X10 casting resin with added Sharpenizer.  Amazing resin.  Holds fantastic details and burns out very cleanly.  The only issue is that it is about $200 for a half liter and requires a special primer to stick to the plate.

I am soon going to be testing a bottle of PowerCast Black resin, which is supposed to have all the properties of the Blue-Cast, but is $150 a half liter, and doesn't require the sharpenizer or the primer. The YouTube reviews of it are very good.  I just got a test bottle of it.  I will likely try it out yet this month.

I do not know of any casting resins that are that cheap that actually give you good casts (if you find one, let me know).  It tried the Phrozen version at that price and it was essentially throwing the money in the garbage can.  Triple that figure and you will be getting into the range of the ones worth the money.  The only two recommended by all the jewelers I know are BlueCast and PowerCast.  (Formlabs has a good one too, but it is only for the Form 2 and 3).

Yeah - I was looking at reviews.

The GOOD reviews for the less expensive  ((sure enough - Phrozen) resins were for big items - bronze castings, not jewelry.

Apparently, for things the size of a human head, the $100 resin works just fine.... A helmet and a bell - 3-D printing may actually bring back bell casting for replacing cracked and broken bells - even using the original bronze, when possible.

I had to tell Nor - he's a campanologist. (A bloody acrophile is what he is - watching him clamber around the outside of churches gave me the willies.)

*EDIT* We have time - Megan will need to be part of those classes to gain access to the equipment - the school is willing to rent studio space when available, but things like metal casting and kilns, nuh-uh.

Grrrr.... finally getting a chance to use the Sonic... I forgot to hollow the models.

The Auld Grump

Not fond of hollowing.

I like the minis to have WEIGHT.

Sure, it saves resin, but they feel WRONG somehow.

So don't feel bad, I'll like it better that way.

Just guessing, but he hid the mini, and my birthday's in a month. ::P: So I know the TYPE of present, even if I don't know the specifics.

So after printing fill it with quicksilver and plug the holes.  Mercury has a high enough density that your figures will have plenty of heft.

Or glue them to metal washers...

It depends, I printed Lost Kingdom's Pyramid for the Croc, hollowed the parts, but it's still pretty heavy.

Same goes for the Titanforge Vampire Hunter Wagon, I hollowed the main carriage part.

It really isn't flimsy or anything.

If I hadn't it would have meant a lot of resin, and that stuff isn't cheap.

Alrighty then!! Finally downloaded my files from all of my Patreons today. Cancelled Arcvillian, as I was going to as well. I've gained 1 new Patreon (Crosslances) but only at a 1 a month. Figured, I stay with them for at least 1 more month & see what I can get for the buck. Only reason I backed this month was for Hansel & Gretel parody figures, but since I've cancelled the pledge for that Kickstarter, really no reason to keep that one going, but it's a buck, so we shall see.

I need to get my machine fired back up as I haven't even put the Vat & build plate back in there since I swapped out components a week ago. I guess not having to print up things for the weekly game has contributed to that, as the current 4 hour AL adventure has turned into 3 sessions now. It's a big dungeon crawler with a shadow black dragon at the end. All I can say about that adventure is the party is getting pummeled in it. :winkthumbs:

Since I really don't need anything for that I may turn to trying to print out Duncan Shadow's Scurryni Bard Riding Chickenbear I picked up awhile back.

Kind of tempted to roll up a wizard for Megan's Bard's Gate kids game, just so I have an excuse for him to live in this -

It's supposed to be an inn - but it is obviously a wizard's house - the tower is a dead giveaway.

Black Scroll's windmill can be used in place of the tower, which might be cool for an artificer.

The Auld Grump - the CR-6 is quietly chugging away - both printers are in full use.

My entry for America's Stupidest 3D Printing Failures:

Five hour print of some hill giants.

Beep! Beep! Beep!

Yay! Print done!

Which is when I realize that the build plate is still hanging in the Wash Station, not in the printer.

It cleaned amazingly quickly, but way stupid.

I'm awake, Grump's asleep. What is wrong with this picture?

I've done this but the plate was just sitting on the table.....

Beats the time I decided to print something with an existing print on the plate. The nice thumping noise alerted me to that one.....

Another failed print, same hill giants.

Repositioning, re slicing, and reprinting.

The first time I have has a print peel off the plate.

Just the big male, with a bag full of bored princess.

It's not just for saving resin sometimes but for making sure heavier pieces don't rip off the build plate.

For some thicker sections, proper hollowing can also prevent deformities in the print, and even cracking, as very large prints could be subject to some small amount of shrinking or warping when doing the final cure.

I printed the WRONG model!

Loaded it in, then wondered why it would take so long, but let it run.

I now have a naked Duke Nukem Casino Girl hanging on my build plate.

I remember looking at her, and thinking if Grump ever runs his Fallout game again, she'd be useful.

I DON'T remember slicing and saving her to the thumb drive.

But I did.

I still need to print the female orc smith and friends, which is what I MEANT to print!

Okay, now I remember why I sliced her.

She is nearly the maximum build height.

Finally got my printer printing again today. It was more or less procrastination setting in, but leveled & started up a print. Glancing over I see it's under 10% left in time. My Saturday group is low on fighting options, & they've got a dragon & some drakes to fight this round, so I'm gonna add in a familiar face or two to help out. The dwarf cleric that sent them on this mission performed augury & she has come to help out the party, along with fellow clansman.

Not enough to say "hey look the PCs can just sit back & let the NPCs die" or "NPCs to the rescue!" Just enough to help them in the fight. They are fighting a young shadow black dragon & they did find a driftglobe & have the daylight option going, so the dragon won't be able to use allot of it's shadow options & will be at disadvantage in allot of things as well.

It should be a good time for all.

I'm not exactly sure what I want to print next.....

Edit: well apparently I didn't do something correctly as I've got a bare plate. Sigh, not what I really wanted to do tomorrow. Hopefully it's not the lcd (as I got it off aliexpress). I'm hoping it might be a leveling issue cause the file is fine as it printed before the new lcd.
