3D Printing General Discussion (merged)

So awhile back I wanted to do something similar to Beadle & Grimm's Campaign Completion coins for my Weds night players. Since we are only 2 adventures away from ending the campaign (last of the Yuan-ti trilogy adventures "Pinnacle of Power" & the Saltmarsh book adventure "The Styes"), I figured I'd better start working on these. I think I found what I want to give my players.

Unchained Games: Pirate coin set

I think I'll take their advice on metals, but what I'll do is give the platinum coins to the players that have been there from the start, gold, next in line & down the line with the shades (plat, gold, silver & copper). There isn't a pre-supported option, but I did a test slice & these slice up & support just like bases (the design is on both size).

What is their advice on metallics?

It's pretty much the names of the coins, or what material they would be made of. You can see it in the picture, but the files actually say the metal (name) gold, (name) silver, etc etc.

I'll probably spray paint the colors on, thou I'm not sure what I'll do for the platinum, unless I can find that color in a spray. I'll probably do some sorta shade on them to bring out the details. If my group holds, then, I should break it down as follow

2 platinum coins, (1 or 2) gold, 2 or 3 silver & finally 3 coppers. The gold & silver guys I can't recall when they showed up for the game. I know they've been gaming with me for quite awhile but a couple guy left due to the pandemic, other things.

Maybe worth mentioning that Elegoo currently has the Mars 2 on sale for $99...

A bit old, but a solid workhorse of a 3D printer.

They also have the Neptune 2 for $125, if anyone is looking for an FDM printer.

Okay, this brings me to a question on resin printers. Strong odors can make my wife sick, so I am hesitant to have one in the house. Can a resin printer be left in a room off my garage? I can heat the room , even for several hours before use if needed, would that allow it to work? Or would the temperature fluctuations ruin the resin?

You may need to get/build an enclosure for it, with a heater to keep it warm - but, yes, we do know someone with athsma that keeps their printers in the garage.

They were one of the first people that we knew who bought a 3D printer - and now have three in a modified wardrobe in their garage. (They currently have a Mars, a Mars 2 Pro, and a Saturn. Their CR3 FDM printer lives in the house - no fumes to worry about.)

I think that they got the wardrobe at Goodwill, then mounted shelves in it.

If you have a seperate room with a heater, it should work.

Duncan doesn't heat the whole garage, so he needs that wardrobe in winter. I don't know what he does in high summer.

Nothing quite like spending an afternoon staring at what's essentially chevrons in a square, but yay... Finally got pressure advance dialled in on my Trident now that Ellis has a newer, much easier to read method.  And since I'm doing such to get nicer looking and stronger prints, I suppose I'll do extrusion multipliers next.

Pro's and cons of Klipper, so many things can be configured, but at the same time it can be interesting trying to find the perfect settings for a new filament... (turns out after hours of testing, Matter3d ABS on my rig works best at 260/110, and very much so loves a warm enclosure - mine soaking for an hour hits about 56C now, so whoo!)

Initially I had mine at 0.0325 due to tower method, then slowly dialled it down to 0.0285, but after a bunch of testing it appears my setup runs best at.... 0.015.  Yeah, no wonder I was having issues with some things just not matching up..

Store the bottles with resin at room temperature so it won't go bad.

As long as it is in the bottle it won't give off odor.

The printer needs around 20/25 degrees celsius to get good results.

I know that it will still be good around 18 degrees or up to 35 degrees.

But make sure it doesn't get too cold or your prints will fail.

So an enclosure might be best when you're not using it.

Also..avoid direct sunlight on your printer when the VAT is filled with resin.

Sunlight cures resin.

I have mine stored under a grey garbagebag and have some black foam sheets around it to protect it from sunlight.

When I won't print for longer periods I clean the VAT.

( Filter the resin and put it back in the original bottle).

Do resin printers work in the cold?

0°C (32°F) Ambient

At freezing temperatures, the enclosure will bump the resin temperature up by ≈2°C, but the ≈17°C resin is still below the recommended levels. The resin can print at this temperature but the exposure times and risk of failure will be higher.

Can I put my resin printer in the garage?

If you want to use your 3D printer in your garage, you need to make sure that the space is adequately insulated. Many 3D printers have difficulty operating in extreme conditions, so it's important to maintain a consistent temperature in your garage to prevent any issues.

I use the box mine came in. Surprisingly it fits quite well over the top. 😄

Part of my ongoing printing for ReaperCon. I think we all have skeletons in our collection, but for some reason I wanted to print out some. I recall I had picked up a few files from Monstrous Encounters (ie the one maker with the AD&D 2e font in some of their listings) awhile back when I was just starting to purchase & print resin minis. I only printed a couple of skeletons from these with my Photon Z.

Anyways, I sliced up this plate the other day & yes I will be painting the ones you think they are, the colors they are suppose to be. :poke:

So, looking for some clear resin (small bottle) the other day on Big River & I came across a listing for the Phrozen Mighty 4k. Now this isn't the 8k, but tbh, that doesn't bother me. I've debated a larger plate printer & I really like the brand, so has anyone heard anything bad (or good, really) about that one. I'm mainly wanting that one for larger prints I can't fit in the Mini 4k, as I'll continue to keep using that one along with a bigger printer.

Also is the plate size too big for a Anycubic Wash n Cure (1st edition)?

Heh, I just realized how big 9.3 inches is.

So I read the review on all3dp . com & it sounds like a printer I'd like as a upgrade or addition. Problem now for me I came across the 8k Mighty & it's only a $100 bucks more......sigh.

I know of a few people who grabbed one prior to the release of the 8k, general concensus I've seen is that it's decent. You're getting the same basic resolution as a 2k small screen printer like the Mars or original Sonic Mini, but that's negligable for most things, especially if you're printing very large things on it.
Phrozen seems to have better quality control than elgoo and anycubic.
