Reaper Bones 5 : Enthusiasm and Commentary Thread

Recommended Posts

It is a nice goal, but not the most exciting one, and folks don't know how much will be needed for the teased ship.

Tried to shrink the image of the Falling Star from Wizkids, but I don’t think it worked as it’s a few inches shorter than Reapers ship.

Still. An interesting comparison.

Reapers ship sure looks pretty nice next to it.

Honestly, as much as I love my Goblobber, with the bend in the throwing arm, the obvious tension in the torsion rope bundle, and the presence of the release rope, the Reaper model is a SUPERIOR sculpt. I am ordering 3.

I think @Skallabjorn may have talked me into getting one of these. I was just going for 2x ballista.

@Skallabjorn do you think the ammunition is going to be molded into the spoon? or a separate piece for the customer to glue in?

Zooming in, seeing the deep undercuts on the ammunition, I would say it will be CAST as a separate piece. Whether it will come that way is anyone's guess. I don't think it would be too hard to modify, given the size and shape.

There were several complaints in the last Bones about poor quality pre-assembly, and Reaper said they would keep that in mind for the next project. How that will work out between better or no pre-assembly is a crapshoot, really.

Honestly, as a modeler, I would rather they came unassembled so I can do any necessary trimming or modification myself. It is very unlikely a stranger will take the care assembling several hundred or thousand models that I would assembling my 1 - 3 models.

Re: translucent ship vs opaque ship, I’d rather have the former for a ship this size. A smaller (less expensive) ship can be more niche, but for how much this sucker is gonna cost, I want the most bang for buck.

Besides, you can always paint it with glow in the dark paint

Actually, didn’t they say on one of the Reaper Lives that they were considering/investigating  doing a figure in glow-in-the-dark plastic?   I think the ship would be great cast in a glow in the dark material! Imagine 36” of glowing ghost pirate goodness!

So, it's about time to go do something useful for the day (paint some miniatures, play a solo game, bake some bread...), but I am left with a thought from a conversation I had with my brother yesterday.  I am looking at the Bones 5 Core set, and considering what sort of D&D campaign one could assemble just from the figures there.  Is there a list somewhere of what those figures are intended to be, by species and occupation, say?

The main downside, of course, is that the hypothetical campaign will be out in 2022 or so.  I might have retired by then and have more time on my hands for painting and playing...::D: But for a new-to-miniatures GM, that delivery is a long way away.  (Off topic, but I wonder if Reaper could sell GM starter sets, presumable at some minor discount over the per-piece retail prices...)

To me the Reaper ship is far superior, especially with all those guns.

Finally caught up on the thread again. I'm definitely up for a translucent ship, assuming it's not color-tinted. I'd love to have the windows be translucent, for example. I'd probably still get only one, due to budget, need, and my wife telling me I can't have a second, but I can definitely see people going for translucent as an extra.

As far as all the talk about how they'd prefer it in regular Bones because they won't be painting it anytime soon, that sounds more like an argument for Reaper to release it in brown-tinted Bones to save everyone a level of time. That could be handy, too.

Archon Studio (LOAD, Vanguard of War, Chronicle X) are branching into modular terrain. The project is now Live:

Apparently it is "full plastic injection" so not the same as their minis. The concept seems interesting, but the preview page is far from finished, so it's hard to get a good grasp on prices (one "Starter Pledge" for $49 is all they currently have listed, along with a $20 add on). The whole magnetized modular wall system looks like it could have potential.

      About
Digital render of the finished sculpts. In the last six or so years I have played a lot of tabletop games, ranging from Warhammer and Dungeons & Dragons to smaller games like Frostgrave and Relicblade. I have fallen in love with the hobby of painting miniatures and everything surrounding it. A year ago I made plans to give something back and to add something to this hobby community I love so dearly.
My background in digital game art helped me a lot since I was already familiar with the software to sculpt digitally. So I started working on a few miniatures I would like to produce. Most of them were abandoned in favor of better ideas, but eventually I created this set of three goblins. These goblins are each embodiments of the archetypes found in many of the games I love: the wizard, the fighter and the thief/ranger.
I spent the last year figuring out how to cast resin to the standards I saw in the products I enjoy and how to make sure digitally sculpted details translated well to the tabletop scale.
These three figures are the end result of that progress, but hopefully the start of a lot more.
I made this Kickstarter to cover the costs of the materials used and shipping, but mostly so I can bring these little goblins to your tabletop :)
All miniatures will be multiple parts cast in resin and supplied unpainted, with a 25mm gaming base.
      The final resin casts.

Scylla Models is back presenting you a new range of Villains and Undead monsters for your collection. The models we present you are master casts  white metal (primed white for better result in the pictures), with the only exception of Zuula. She on her Night Terror is our first large monster and we decided to go resin. The results are quite impressive as you might see in the picture.
