Infinity: Defiance

I made my save.  My pile of infinity minis, bones 5 hitting the pocket book, never played the game, and a couple of other factors combined to give this one a pass.  I don't need to be dropping 300E on a KS just now.  I still have FOMO.  If it comes to it, maybe I'll get it at GenCon 2021 or directly from CB.  Or maybe I won't get it.  I can't play every game I want.  I think my game collection speaks loudly to that uncomfortable reality.

Shush you! I don't need your game collection reinforcing that idea with my game collection!

I am deliberately avoiding showing my son this KS because he still hasn't finished painting the Infinity figures he bought after he played a demo at Adepticon back in March.  He insisted that he was going to paint them up, and the two of us were going to start playing Infinity.

Now I NEED to see this mystery goal.  They put a teaser up on youtube that shows it as something BIG.  And I'm not disappointed with the Haqqislam reinforcement pack.  Nice stuff.  Probably that one and JSA for me.

I'm still debating.  I do like it comes with Khawarij and the (exclusive to Red Veil box) Al Fasid HMG, the Zhayedan I'm wondering about....  Although they definitely look epic.  Was a surprisingly elite specced pack compared to the others, which looked rather close to the standard starter packs plus one or two things of interest (Ariadna got a Dog Warrior, for example)

Edit: if it had the new Tariq sculpt..... :p

Hi @WhiteWulfe.  You seem know Infinity pretty well

Is this reinforcement pack enough to play a Haqqislam unit in Infinity, or would I need to get more units?

Like I mentioned I’ve got Coldfront coming and going to try playing it with my 13yo son.  If playing Infinity sticks, are these reinforcement packs a good way to build on that with units of additional factions that I could also use in Defiance?  Or would a better next step from Coldfront be to get another starter set like Red Veil or Firestorm?

Thanks!

HaqqIslam might get added before the end.  They seem to be working through the factions now.

I’m assuming the mechanics they use in Infinity are going to be translated over to the new format.  Would you recommend any of the unlocked packs from a gameplay/lore perspective?  Some of them look pretty cool, but maybe I shouldn’t just choose based on that!

Blargh, apparently I totally forgot to reply to this.

Lore and/or gameplay wise, a number of the packs do seem interesting, doubly so since there's been talk about how most of the base minis with the game will have profiles for use in Infinity as well.

I have to admit - I'm actually fairly new to the game.  I tend to do a lot of looking into various things before I decide to sign up for any particular game though.

I would argue that for HaqqIslam that it might be a tough sell for some.  It will give you approximately 290 points out of a standard 300 (and 5.5 out of 6 SWC), however that's a rather elite army that might not make the most of the light infantry specialization that HaqqIslam is known for, and the lowest cost mini is 27 points.  I do make regular use of the superjump the Khawarij have though, as it's rather handy, and if played well, can be a nasty and sneaky surprise to drop in on your opponents (super jump lets you Matrix your way in between building tops for example, or to be able to jump down what might as well feel like two full stories from a roof to the ground and NOT take fall damage).  If you're starting out, the mix could be handy, as the models do look rather nice.

Ariadna's Reinforcement pack seems similar, in that it's a 234 point list (5 SWC), but you can't use all of those minis at the same time for a vanilla list - it comes with three Frontoviks, but vanilla Ariadna can only field two.

Then again, for the general theme that Defiance seems to be going for you wouldn't just send regular line troopers to take on such a task...

The reinforcement pack does look like it could offer some nice units.  Coldfront has some of the units already in it  (Veteran Kazak w/ AP Rifle), and if you add in the Beyond:Coldfront boxed set you would also get Vassily and the Engineer.  Given that compared to just Operation:Coldfront there's only one mini of overlap, I could see the reinforcement packs offering additional units to work with that are in that starter pack, and give additional flexibility.

As for where to go from Operation:Coldfront, I'd recommend playing a few games first to see how one likes to play, and then look into what units fit that particular role.  The really great thing is that you can proxy miniatures in to try out if you'd like those before you buy any more, which is rather handy.  I'd only really recommend the other starter packs alongside Operation:Coldfront if the fluff, lore, or look of the other armies in the other starters caught your eye.  I'd also recommend not spending $150+ shortly out of the gate on various miniatures - I only did this because there were several I wanted that have been out of print for 4-5 years now.  That and I knew I wanted the murder scorpion (Maghariba Guard)

The pledge manager is open.  Existing pledgers should wait for the email.  Late backers can go out to Gamefound and sign up.

I already got the email, but I'm limiting myself to a maximum of 4 reinforcement packs.

So here's my dilemma.  I already have Operation: Icefront, Operation: Red Veil, Operation: Wildfire, the JSA army box, and the "Beyond" boxes for Icestorm and Red Veil.  Do I expand on the stuff I already have, or do I go into something new?  I think the Onyx and Morat packs are a given since they fit the theme of the main Defiance game, but so many other choices....
