usually minis I give away were painted specifically as a present for someone. I've sold some at auctions, though it tends to be as part of selling off a whole game or army

Keep 99% of the painted ones...but there have been some gifted ones.

I keep most of them. There are a few that have been gifts, and I've done a few as part of forum exchanges.

So, once upon a time, there was an imaginary country called "Schoeffen-Buschhagen", somewhere in Not Quite Germany...(Map by my older son.)

 

OK, I won't really tell it that way.The real world story of this army is that I picked up a set of Prince August molds for 18th Century "Irish Wild Geese" in 1990-1 sometime, and my older son was a baby.  Thinking to myself, under the influence of wargaming magazines I was reading at the time, that it would be fun to do an Old School imaginary countries game with him, when he was a little older, I set to work.  

 

Happily, Chris Palmer came along to pitch in in the mid-'90s, because it took longer than I was originally expecting.  But my son, and, eventually, my second son, grew up to paint and play with these figures...

 

 

 

We were using units of almost 60 infantry or 30 cavalry, so there was a lot of casting and painting to be done.

 

 

Eventually, we maneuvered by regiments on large tables.  Here older son's light infantry in muted organs guard the flank of an advancing unit of Wiegenburg infantry (in white, younger son's unit) with one of my regiments (blue and yellow flag) beyond, and backed up by a regiment of mercenaries (we acquired someone else's similar abortive project at a flea market, flag by older son).

 

 

With some help from another club member, we built a section of fortress wall for sieges, and the brothers can be seen here planning their attack.

 

 

Schoeffen-Buschhagen dragoons, supported by S-B infantry and younger son's Wiegenburgers attempt to force a bridge against another club member's troops, in an exciting game at Chris Palmer's house.  Chris's green-coated North Polenberg troops can be seen in the upper right in the distance.

 

 

Family gaming as originally envisioned, 28 years later...

 

 

S-B infantry advances against older son's Wachovian foot, in field maneuvers (not a battle, since we are traditionally allies).

I spotted one. I think. 

 

I was watching an old, old, Kirk was the captain, episode of Star Trek. Title: Tomorrow is Yesterday. Plot/Action: Kirk and Sulu are skulking around a late 1960s era USAF airbase and they get caught (at gunpoint point! .38 caliber revolver) by a very senior security guard, a three stripe sergeant. 

 

The sergeant demands they hand over their belts one at a time. They do. He is holding two belts each one has a phaser and a communicator attached. Kirk and Sulu completely disarmed. At this moment one of the communicators activates, the sergeant fumbles with it, mashes a button then...

 

An alert Sulu says, “Captain, the emergency signal...” (noting that the guard has hit the beam-me-up-now! button.)

 

...the sergeant dematerializes. When he rematerializes in the transporter room he is still holding his .38 but not the belts. Which is lucky for Kirk, who contacts Spock in the very next scene using a communicator that just beamed out!

 

I had never noticed that! even though I must have seen the episode 7 or 8 times before.

I usually pack the miniature in the smallest container I can find, like a dice brick or similar box, and pack it with foam or other soft material to immobilize it. After that, I usually pack the small container into a repurposed cardboard shipping box, like the kind one might get from ordering miniatures from Reaper and other manufacturers. I'll grab just about any kind of packing material I can find to keep the small box in place.

 

I have only done this a few times, but it seems to have worked so far.

I've given away perhaps as many as six painted figures in my life, all painted explicitly as presents.

I keep most of mine, but I've painted a few as gifts, and painted some with thre intention of selling them. A few others, I've painted to keep and then decided to sell after the fact.

When I was younger and had time to play tabletop wargames regularly (and paint tons of models), I would eventually sell my armies after a while. I just didn't have the space. 
 

I've given away individual painted minis as gifts, but nowadays I hoard everything.

I've averaged about two forum exchanges per year, so I've given a few minis away.  I don't sell them.

Murica, the mustard monk.  

A superhero in the Marvel Universe*.  He is a second-generation immigrant from Tibet.  He runs a hot dog cart in times square.  Once Captain America was chasing a Hydra Agent and a vial of super-solider syrum was dropped in his hot dog water.  He ended up with the full dose, but diluted by hot dog water. 

He is super strong, tough, and fast (just not as quite as so much as the captain)    He is also resistant to heat, cold and disease. 

He continues to serve hot dogs in the big city, but when danger threatens his people,  he strips to the waist, revealing his star-spangled costume and fights crime!

I keep the great majority for myself, but I have given some away.

 

As a general rule, I do not sell painted miniatures. No sane person would pay the price I place on the time invested in my painted works.
