The return of the Old World

Recommended Posts

I don't particularly care myself, I've been playing Kings of War since right before 2nd edition and intend to stick with Mantic, but I find it fascinating that they think people who already scrapped their square bases are willing to return to a system run by the very company that asked them to rebase in the first place.

This is interesting.

A case of too little too late most likely, but very interesting indeed. If handled well, this could work, but then when has GW been known to handle things well?

If they were wise, they would concentrate on the Oldhammer type sculpts, as I am sure they have noticed the bundles of cash they're leaving on the table and of how an entire industry of chinese recasters has grown up around them. Offer the figures legit, at decent price and the inflated bubble pops overnight. Bringing back the Mordheim line, and rereleasing the game with tweaked rules, maybe even alongside a version 2 of the video game version would be well received.

If they resist the urge to retcon the lore, and continue it in a sane and respectful fashion, if they swallow their greed enough to have unit boxes contain 20 rather than 10 figures for units, and adjust their prices to saner levels in general, resist the urge of codex creep....and most importantly there had best be an Oscar winning performance of "we done goofed".

Could it be done? Yes. Could it be done by GW? Unless there has a been a complete internal uprising and revolution almost certainly not. But it is something to wait and see.

To be honest, I would love to see the Old Lore  return, eventhough I'm a painter/collector and not a gamer, but...

I don't trust GW anymore.

They have hyped too many games and discontinued them at will.

I expect them to launch the Old World with a big bang, hype it, sell the books, the armies and then after a year or two  they will drop it.

At the time I was kind of amazed that GW killed both the game and the world.

I kind of doubt they are bringing the game itself back.  For one, their modelling style is now the exact opposite of "ranks up nicely".

If they bring out a nice army book with fluff from the Old Lore but with some new art and stories I might buy that, Lizardmen, Undead, Chaos..

But I will not start a collection anymore, I have Lost Kingdoms, Reaper and TT Combat as my main forces now.

A single mini can always be bought of course if it's a nice sculpt.

But for a gamer who really wants to invest? I say beware!

I once wanted to collect and actually play Warmaster ( 10mm Warhammer) they pushed it and hyped it for a year, every White Dwarf had scenarios and galleries, new armies came, awesome!

Then it was transferred to their Specialist Games Section, got their own monthly magazine, and I kept buying it.

Of course they promised to release a few more armies, and then they dropped the whole thing, no more support, no more armies, no more books.

Just like that.

I had seen it before with Gorkamorka , The WHFB books had been revised many times, but I really thought this would be an ongoing game system.

After that they repeated that with other games, bringing back EPIC and then dropping it again, Inquisitor anyone?

The major blow came with the end of the Old World and the introduction of 40K Fantasy AOS.

And now I'm to believe they will revive it all?

I will certainly buy a cool unit or book, but I don't game.

If you intend to game I would use the old rules like the Oldhammer Community does and don't let yourself get fooled again.

I've been liking some of the wackier things they've been coming out with lately, so I'll be a bit disappointed if they do start shifting things back to a more generic fantasy setting.

But mostly it seems weird to announce it now with simply a logo and a whole lot of vagueness, rather than in 6 to 8 months time when they should have more solid info on just what form this return to The Old World is taking.

I take it more of GW telling it’s former fans they might want to stop buying from other mini and game companies that have tried to step up and fill the void left by the demise of Warhammer cause, hey look, we may be doing something in a few years that you might be more interested in.

But of course because we’re GW all you’re getting now is a tease with no real info.

Honestly. They could teach ReaperRon a thing or two about noncommittal teasing.

Yeah, sorry Games Workshop.  Too little, too late.  Not trusting a company that is so willing to take decades of lore, fluff, and story and throw it out the window, and completely restructure everything seeming around "look at all the faces Nurgle now has".  Or something to that effect.

Also, coming out with a "hey, we're doing a thing!" when a bunch of other companies stepped in and came up with a better product...  Nah, I'm good.

That and I prefer skirmish games nowadays.  And yeah, I still remember what they did to specialist games.

I... honestly don't know how I feel about this.

I had already abandoned Warhammer, long before they blowed the Old World up.... (Not coincidentally, about the time Kings of War first edition came out.)

But I was incredibly pissed off when they did.

One thing I need to make clear - Rountree is very definitely not Kirby.

He has managed to turn the finances of GW around much, much faster than I would have expected - I was, frankly, expecting GW to wither and die under Kirby and his cronies.

Rountree got rid of the cronies and most of their toxic policies, and started broadening GW beyond the one game that had become Kirby's single focus.

I have actually made some GW purchases in recent months - the Contrast paints are a lot of fun - not using them as intended, but fun. ::):

The only reason I have not bought any GW minis recently is not liking their aesthetic - which is a far cry from not buying them because I loathe the company. (Well that and their prices are still freakin' insane....

There is even one warband in AoS that I am tempted to buy and use in The Blight - the Corvus Cabal.

So... yeah, mixed feelings.

*EDIT* One positive thing - I really like that they announced this years in advance - one of the big differences between Rountree and Kirby is Kirby really did not like things to leak before release - and two or more years will give them time to test and balance. This alone makes me more optimistic than I might otherwise be.

My first reaction on reading the post was "This seems like they're testing the waters for fan reaction" and a lot of that comes from this single line:

"You get the idea – this is a long way off. Years. More than two. Like three or more. Definitely not soon."

And I see I'm not alone with my doubt.

As I read other reactions today, I'm wondering if GW has getting enough feedback that is essentially "I wish GW would bring back WHFB" that they've decided that they had to respond in some manner.

Hmm.

Ever been in a long term relationship with a significant other?

Sure, they may have been high maintenance and you spent more on them than you probably should, but you thought they were worth it and besides, you both  seemed really happy in the relationship even though some of your friends and family may have thought you were being taking advantage of.

You figured the two of you were going to be together forever.

And then one day out of the blue, and with no warning, and with no reason given, they tell you that the relationship is over.

They’re leaving you.

And not not only are they leaving you, they’re going to act like the years you were together never happened.

And you never hear from them again.

Until one day a few years later you get a short text from them.

”I don’t know if you’re seeing anybody, and I’m not saying anything, I’m just suggesting you might want to check out my Facebook page in a couple of years.”

I put a ton (80+ hours) of time into these guys for my best friend's Christmas present. There's some more detailed pics on my Instagram feed, same name as mine is here.

Close up of the boss's hammer, plus the special case I did.

Orks are terrific, aren’t they? While the aesthetics and logic behind most 40k factions tries to toe the line between Full Blanche and minimally plausible weapons of war, the Space Orks just embrace the most absurd logic (a red paint job actually makes it go faster).
This conversion was created by my client- and I really love it. Orks looting vehicles from Imperial factions is always great, but there’s something especially amazing about looting the claw of a titan and turning it into a tank.
For the paint job, the titan claw is meant to look like the Orks painted over the original Titan’s color scheme. To this end, some of the scratches in the red show blue and imperial insignias and patterns underneath.

Presenting Slimux (A Demon Gardener) and Mulch (His loyal Plough Snail), characters from the Nurgle Demon faction for the Warhammer games by Games Workshop.

Glad to get this one finished at last, it's been sitting at around 80% done for about a year.
I'm really happy with how Mulch turned out, less so with Slimux, I think I just used too many similar colours on him (and yellow eyes wasn't a great idea either).

As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.
