Car Wars Sixth Edition

Recommended Posts

Our big office project is Car Wars Sixth Edition, a completely new edition of the classic game of autoduelling.

The project launches tomorrow morning and runs through January 6th. We're running pre-campaign stretch goals based on number of followers to this page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sjgames/car-wars-sixth-edition-by-steve-jackson-games

One last pre-campaign stretch goal remains to unlock.

Any questions? Please ask away and I'll answer as best I can.

Colour me interested as I've been a fan of Car Wars since my college days in the 90s.

A new KS edition was hinted at for years.

Like Battletech, I always loved the car building section more than the actual play rules because the games themselves could get tedious after a while, particularly if more players were involved. I'm pretty certain the new dice mechanics will make it faster, but I'm still a fan of rolling standard dice instead of expensive specialty dice.

Can we use our Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars with the game? ::):

Also hope you'll have weapon sprues so the hobbyists can modify their cars!

[Looks at Hot Wheels/Matchbox cars.]

[Looks at CAV miniatures]

[Looks at sharp knife and CA glue]

There's some potential here.

Live! : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sjgames/car-wars-sixth-edition-by-steve-jackson-games/

BF pledges include a free expansion!

$75 plus shipping gets you the four-player set.

$140 pledge  is already a better deal than $75 pledge plus add-ons.

If I can't use my 16-car Costco pack of Hot Wheels I bought ten years ago for this game...

EDIT: Looks like you can! Car Wars is 1/64 scale and Hot Wheels is *approximately* that. : https://dfarq.homeip.net/what-scale-are-hot-wheels-cars/

Yeeeeah, I shouldn't have. But I did.

And it's not like they can STOP you from modding your own vehicles. If they really meant to do that, they'd have gone with the old 5mm scale from the Car Wars of the ancient days of my youth.

At least, that's what I would have done. But no, they've gone with something approximating Hot Wheels scale, hoping to compete with Gaslands, so... let slip the cars of war, I guess...

I recall a friend having Car Wars amongst his giant bookcase of games. I don't think we ever played a game but we did play Autoduel once or twice. I recall having a semi with trailer that housed my garage & such. One of the many games we played once or twice back in the HS days.

I don't have to back this.  A friend already has.  Woohoo!

No second set for conventions, eh?

12 hours left for BF deals, with the free Al's Upgrade expansion.

$139 level will soon be a better deal than $74 with free add-ons.

The game will, of course, be available retail. So you can get a second set. :upside:

After some thought, I won't be backing this.

  • I already have several KS backed RPGs which I haven't played (and barely unwrapped).
  • I haven't had a regular game group in  five years.
  • It'll eventually pop up in an FLGS at a decent price (happened to me more than once)

Good luck to the campaign anyway!

I'm a long-time fan of Car Wars, but I'm not backing this one.  I saw a couple of people playing this in a video, and it... just didn't feel like Car Wars to me.  Which is fine - I've still got all the earlier editions I've collected over the years saved up to play with anyhow.  They're succeeding pretty well without my help anyhow.

Correct. The core game will be offered to distributors in 2021. We're unlikely to offer expansions to distribution. FYI. Retailers may create Warehouse 23 accounts by contacting us at [email protected] Retailer accounts at the site give them access to titles to sell in their stores. This allows us to keep a better handle on the game and avoids some of the larger problems that are disrupting and devastating portions of the market at the moment.

We will make final distribution decisions later. Right now, our focus is on the Kickstarter campaign.

$100 add-on only pledge available. Gets you $110 in credit. The playmats and road tiles, afaik, already good prices compared to what's available retail.

Road tile pics update: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sjgames/car-wars-sixth-edition-by-steve-jackson-games/posts/2701397

And then... :ik_oops:

      Story
Texts from here will be a mix between Italian and English language, they will be translated from the next week until the KS launch. The texts are subject to change, only the final page will be considered correct.
Let yourself be captivated by the magical atmosphere of Nova Aetas!
Set in the Italian Renaissance, this game will guide you through a fantastic, mythical campaign based upon the historic events of the war between Rome and Venice in the early 1500s.
Nova Aetas: Renaissance is a reimplementation of the original game founded on KS in January 2016.  This new, improved version, is born from the experience gained during these years and will give you an even deeper experience by immersing  you and your group in a charming and mysterious Italy, full of historical characters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Caterina Sforza, and many others – both real and imaginary.
Soon we will show all the remaining models and components.

Those who know me well generally know what a massive Darkest Dungeon fan I am so I've been very good to not post about this one yet. I've been holding off 'til nearer release date to avoid putting a thread up too early. There is going to be a kickstarter for a Darkest Dungeon boardgame. This makes me happy. It will have miniatures! This makes my heart sing with Joy. It's going to be by Mythic Games. This makes me somewhat concerned. I've heard horror stories about their rulebooks needing updates and finally becoming playable  a year or two after release (or even in a second crowdfunding campaign if it's their Joan of Arc game).

That being said it will have gorgeous miniatures that, while similar to many of the unofficial Darkest Dungeon miniatures, knock then pants off many of them. I'll probably be backing this for the figures alone but I appreciate any concerns that people might have.

They claim they're looking to launch some time in late October or early November.

There are a few more pictures and a handful of videos doing the rounds at the moment including two or three gameplay sessions. Here's what I was able to piece together from them.

It’s a campaign game. You don’t play as the Heir. You play as the Heroes. You randomly generate dungeons then head inside making important choices about your resources (food, torches, spades etc). When you meet monsters you lay out a mini dungeon board and fight it out.
Heroes and enemies occupy four positions. Attacker, Defender, Ranged and Support. The skills you can use are based on the position you’re in. The battles have a four round limit so they don’t drag on too long. Take too long and you have to retreat back into the corridor. Corridor encounters happen. There is a scouting system.
Every 3 dungeons you have to tackle a boss dungeon. You randomly generate the boss beforehand and he has in town effects and other effects so you really want to get rid of him when the time comes. Boss battles are all or nothing. If you fail a boss battle you don’t retreat. You just loose the entire party.
After 3 bosses you go into the Darkest Dungeon itself to end the game. So that’s 9 dungeon runs (or 12 depending on if the boss dungeon counts as part of the once every 3 dungeons frequency) then the end game run to complete the entire campaign.
They currently only plan to have 8 core heroes in the game (you can bet the other 7 or 9 will be stretch goals). When you loose a hero there are two replacement heroes in the stagecoach. Take a new hero. The stagecoach does not appear to generate new heroes beyond these two replacement heroes. If one player’s hero dies and they are unable to obtain a replacement from the stagecoach then you all lose. Game over man. Game over.
They intend to launch around late October or early November.
Mythic kickstarter campaign lengths are as follows.
Time of Legends: Joan of Arc 32 days
      Solomon Kane: 24 days
      Reichbusters 10 days
      Super Fantasy Brawl 8 days
Time of Legends: Joan of Arc 1.5 15 days
      Enchanters: East Quest 11 days
      Steamwatchers 11 days
Hel – the Last Saga 14 days
So we’re probably looking at 8-15 days which is quite a short period to scrounge up cash in.
