Stargrave in 2021

Recommended Posts

Obviously there's going to be a box of space humans. The boring route would be one box of hi-tech humans and one box of ragtag humans, even if those would no doubt be very practical sets for a variety of gaming. Or one box of dudes and one box of ladies.

Personally I'm hoping for a box of mixed mutant aliens. That would be handy, particularly if legs and torsos were separate pieces for maximum multi-part madness. I'd also go for a box of robots.

I kind of hope they hold off on the humans and lead with aliens and robots. it's a lot easier to find good space humans than aliens and robots.

My guess is there will be a box of humanoids with a variety of heads. Hopefully a mix of male and female types, or if they're going to do one, go with female first.

A box of mix and match robots would be great, especially if they're designed to play well with the other sets.

If they had gone for more of a campy style a box each of mutants, robots and humans would be great for all kinds of silly Masters of the Universe style characters.

If I had to guess, the sets would be something like;

Spaceship Crew - Humanoids (form fitting space suits, duty uniforms, etc - with a variety of heads)

Space Pirates - Humanoids (light armor or clothes with a few armor components - with a variety of heads)

Robots (service and security types)

Then you start into the more unique body types: reptilians, insectoids, etc

Hmm... I wonder if I should pick up some of the Core Space miniatures for this?

It'd be great if they made mounted legs somehow so you could have them ride all sorts of weird stuff, so you'd have a use for something like the Bones raptor pack.

That's a fairly easy conversion. And with the rise of 3D printing, you could probably find either a full mounted mini or at least the legs component on Thingiverse.

The "official" notice is up on Joe's blog. http://therenaissancetroll.blogspot.com/ Behold! The Stargrave cover in all its artsy glory.

Has anyone heard anything else about the other Frostgrave supplements? Joe just dropped that the next one will have new spells...

Today we’re giving you a low-res preview of a fantastic piece of Stargrave artwork from Helge C. Balzer. It shows a mercenary standing alongside a biomorph – one of the backgrounds available for your captain in Stargrave (we’ll be looking at how you create your captain in the future!)

Below you will find an extract from the book describing biomorphs:

"When the old empires fell, so did their laws limiting ‘genetic enhancement’. A few scientists seized this opportunity to engage in radical experimentation. This involved both the genetic manipulation of naturally-born individuals and the creation of wholly new ‘tank-born’ individuals. In either case, those that survived these experiments were often left with unique abilities to control their own bodies, such as realigning their skeletal structure, growing new limbs, changing their skin tones, or even growing additional organs to deal with toxic substances or alien environments. Unfortunately, many biomorphs were also left psychically scarred by their modifications. While the worst of these tend to destroy themselves quickly, almost all carry some form of phobia, psychosis, or other mental impairment.

Depending on the abilities of a biomorph, they tend to dress in loose, or very stretchy outfits, or have specialized suits of armour made that take into account their abilities. More than any other background, biomorphs tend to form independent crews because they are on the run – either from those that created them or want to do further experiments on them, or to escape the consequences of some crime (often unintended)."

The alien kind of looks like a conversion of one of Mantic's elves.  Maybe ground down a helmet then swapped in arms off of their first, terribly proportioned Basilians?

You can imagine a sprue with low grav and high grav mutant bodies.

I guess I might have to finish that box of Watchers (grey aliens) from the Wild West Exodus game (I don't play that game, but they are some of the best grey aliens I've ever seen). Would it be weird to have a "crew" of just grey aliens? Or do we think they could also be useful as randomized opposing forces to the players' crews?

*edit*

Oh, I just realized - that slender biomorph in the illustration reminds me of the Muun miniatures from the WotC Star Wars miniatures line.

An all Grey force wouldn't be any weirder than anything else that's likely to appear on the table.

Oh man... Now my brain is filling with ideas for mods and conversions of minis in my collection for this (and also because I just like doing that stuff in general). I already have a ton of collectible minis in my collection (various Clix, Star Wars, D&D, etc), and I'm mentally building up possible crews to make from them.

I have a full collection of the HALO Clix (not because I play Clix, but I did run a short-lived HALO RPG, and I wanted proper representation). Most of the sculpting is not great, but with a little work, I could clean up (and re-base) one of those Grunts and a Brute to be usable.

Certain Hero Clix fit perfectly into random sci-fi settings. Especially if they have high-tech looking weapons and gear.

And while many D&D monstrous races could pass for aliens, you need a mini with the right "gear" to make it work for that sci-fi look. Too many monstrous race minis have tattered clothes or very damaged armor (or armor that just looks too primative to really fit in, like chainmail). I think the Bullywug Thug and the Kuo-Toa Hunter will pass nicely with some weapon swaps and a re-paint.

I've already started separating out a few of the Star Wars minis for clean-up and repaints.

And of course we have all of the Bones Chronoscope stuff from the last kickstarter (Bones 4). I've already done a decent mod to one that  showed up without a head (it was replaced, but I think my mod now looks better than the original).

I'm mainly thinking of crew diversity for this, so I'm generally considering crews that aren't made up entirely of the same type/species (no crews with a bunch of Rebel Troopers or HALO Spartans, or all Rodians [Greedo's species], but maybe one each of those might fit in for some role in the crew).
