I suspect the original would have been more like Kah-tah-bleh-pahs, since it comes from "καταβλέπω, (katablépō)". But by the time we reach later Gygaxian, it's unclear what the preferred pronunciation would have been. :B):

Meh, I'll just put a sombrero on mine and call it a Cataramba!

If I manage to get one, he's getting some grey temples and mystic clothing like paint job. Viola! Benedict Cumberplants.

The value of the core set is bonkers.  Generally I *think* you can expect somewhere between 2x and 3x the price.

Basically, here's how I'd break it down:

If you like/would use the minis and have the money, pledge for it.

If you like/would use the minis and will have the money in the next year, pledge the minimum and add funds later.

If you aren't that interested in it, wait for retail.  You can always add last minute funds to the pledge manager if you really want to.

For example, your friend can pledge $1 now, and whether he decides to order $8 or $800 worth of stuff in the pledge manager later it will all work out.

Edit: Also, in years past there has been the option to pledge for specific subgroups of the core set.  The value isn't quite as good, but it's still decent.  If you only want certain sections of the core set that's probably the best bang for your buck.

I'm mixed on my response so far.. there are some awesome minis in the core set.. but there are also some I hope are just rough WIPs and won't be as cartoony when they are made..  I'm also a little disappointed that they chose to use the Limited release VIP Reapercon dragon bust instead of commissioning a new one.  Sure, Bones vs Resin but still..

Lots of good add ons, love the paint set.  Not sure how I feel about the DD Expansion yet.  Just not a lot I need there.

What would the Catoblepas cost at retail?  Trying to get a friend to join the KS and he is trying to figure out the value of the core set.  I am myself am in at $250

With all the different mini sizes within the core set, it's hard to put a price on any single mini.

However, once the campaign ends and the pledge manager opens up, you generally get the option of getting individual minis from the core set at a fraction of the retail price. Overall, expect it to be about 50% of the retail price.

Izzy just gave me permission to post her concept art:

I love this guy!  I like the pebbly skin texture on the sculpt.  You captured the personality in the brow ridge and underbite really well!

Does he really fit on a 2” round base?  I thought he looked longer than that.

My best guess (not a Reaper representative) would be $5-7 US, given the size and complexity and comparing the figure to other Bones figures already available at retail.

Not sure if anyone has made one of these yet, or even wants one, but there's a guy who usually makes one for the Dwarven Forge kickstarters and I've always found them very useful.  Here's a link to a very simple spreadsheet for what's on the kickstarter so far.
