Don't be to afraid of messing up to badly. If you really don't like a paintjob, just bathe the mini in Simple Green for a day or so, then scrub it and most of the paint should come right off. I've had to do this for a couple of minis myself and it worked like a charm.

Also, “messing up” is just part of learning. It’s fun to keep your early figures and compare them later on. See how far you’ve come :winkthumbs:

Yes, be sure to keep your first figure , or at least one of the early ones you did, for comparison purposes.  There is a great thread here, where folks were invited to post one of their earliest figures and then one of their favorite current figures.  It really is cool to see how everyone improves with practice.  You'll enjoy looking back too in the future.

There are also places at the border to get a post office box, or that hold packages for a while. Can get items delivered there. **waves from Vancouver**

I'm debating having mine sent to my mother in Oregon, who would road trip up with the loot. Maybe... maybe not. Can decide later.

I live in Niagara Falls, Canada so I'm back and forth across the US border all the time.

If the package is coming UPS, you can have it addressed to an American UPS depot near the border and mark it "hold for pickup". No extra charge, just drop by and pick it up.

[Mandupar Pass Encounter]

I look at that, and I think Barsoom.

We need some girallons.

The Auld Grump

I like the way you think!  Who says we haven't seen any sci-fi or pulp in this Kickstarter yet?  That encounter looks great for a pulp/Mythos game, too....

I'm mentally going through the list my player and I made about which mini's in Core we really like and definitely want...

Of the 12 mini's in that set, he wants the catfolk really bad.  That's it.

Did they purposefully pick out the *meh* mini's for this set?

Okay, so "Medium Skin Tone" isn't a single paint color on Reaper's website.  Rather it is a triad of three paints, none of which are named "Medium Skin Tone."  Color me confused.

Those aren't bad minis... not throw-money-at-the-screen exciting, but not bad.  Seems like the other learn-to-paint kits had similarly OK-but-not-jaw-dropping minis, too, and perhaps that's by design:  so that the painters can just focus on learning the basics and the techniques on minis they aren't emotionally invested in, so that they aren't being intimidated into inaction about getting That One Mini absolutely perfect.

The set isn't for me, but it looks like the sort of thing that would make a nice gift for a beginner.  I agree with the folks who said that an early release for it would make more sense than waiting a couple years to finally introduce your friends and family to the hobby, though.

Because of the rather generic nature of the paint colours listed and a couple other things, that graphic looked to me like what the developers at my workplace call a "wireframe":  sort of a mockup for the finished product that serves as a sort of placeholder outline until development is complete.  Hence, the generic colour names:  those will be filled in the final product with more specific paint names.  (I'm betting the mini selection is more or less finalized, but who knows?  Maybe that's a wireframe, too, and will be subject to change during development and finalization, too.)  I'd think of that graphic the same way I would the unfinished 3D renders or Izzy's placeholder sketches.

Or whatever the European equivalent would be. But yeah - I haven't had any paint jobs that were too awful so far, so I can only deduce that I'm a natural!

The Bones Black ogre is the biggest figure I've painted so far. I've no idea how I'm going to tackle any of the dragons in the Kickstarter, but I'm in love with them all.

For sure, for sure. I can't imagine getting rid of anything yet. I'm finally getting into the swing of things again, and I can't wait to see where my skills are 18 months from now...

Thank you for the welcome! First post and first time I'm getting in on the Kickstarter. Even though I eyed the past two from afar, I wasn't painting yet when they were happening... It was tempting, and now that I've started painting, I regret not having the Dreadmere figures I was so in love with last time.

All I need now is something to bridge the next year-and-a-half...

Well, a good chunk o the Dreadmere figures have been released in the store...  ::D::rolleyes:

Haha, I am considering a similar option! I've got an aunt and uncle with a cabin in Washington... I wonder if they'll let me borrow their address...

I wish I had done that.  My first minis were painted waaaaay back in the early or mid '80s, with Testors' Enamels, with absolutely no guidance or models for how the whole thing would work, and absolutely no art or technique:  no primer/base coat, no shading, no highlighting, a one-size-fits-all cheap brush, and all the enthusiasm a 12-year-old beginner can muster:  sloppy gloss-black boots, red cape, silver armor, unnatural flesh tone, and no eyes nor mouth nor anything else painted on a vague and mannequin-like face!  It would make grown mini painters weep, between fits of laughter.  I'm afraid I stripped the paint off at some point, and sold the mini (an early Ral Partha sculpt, no doubt) at some point over the decades.  I'd surely post my early attempts to that thread for the horror and amusement of everyone else if I still had my oldest minis around!

I found a new copy of my first figure at ReaperCon 2018 I really enjoyed painting him again.

like YrionimosW I was painting in Testors enamels, then I took a few decades off.

Then Bones 1 kickstarter sucked me back into the hobby, and I discovered I really love painting.

Its funny almost everyone I know thats 35+ started with Testor's  There was no guidance back then.
