Reaper Bones 5: Enthusiasm and Commentary thread

I'm rather liking this Chronoscope - it's a huge improvement over Bones IV, and I feel like there's a lot more stuff in it somehow, in addition to a lot more stuff that fits my tastes in speculative fiction.  The loose themes kind of devolved to a random mix  there toward the end, and not everything is to my taste, but enough is.

The Lovecraft monsters are a win for me.

I'm glad to see that old, bloated zombie lady in Bones at last - what a good, creepy monster!

The girl with the sword will be an easy conversion to fantasy.

We've got  more robots, which were one of the weaker parts of B4CS for me, but this time enough of the robots share a theme (the not-terminators) that it seems to work much better.

The post-apocalypse heroes and zombie hunters will blend right in with the other similar figures from past Bones Kickstarters, which I've been saving for a rainy day (not sure what I'll do with them yet, but I like 'em!)  The G.I. figure is kind of cool and different.

I always enjoy the steampunk and weird west stuff - again, they fit in well with the previous Kickstarter's figures of this type, which I've also been saving for a rainy day.

I like the Ghoul Queen set, too - that's a great, pulp horror set of stuff, right up my alley.

So I won one of the Reaper Giveaways from last weeks Live episode and I still haven't received an email back from Justin saying my shipping details were received and now they've moved on to this weeks giveaway winners...does anyone know if they normally respond to the emails or is the week long delay just because of the insanity of the kickstarter? I'm just worried it will fall through the cracks and I won't get sent my goodies haha

Probably the latter. Give it until Monday to see if you get a shipping notification. They don't send acknowledgement of your details, just the shipping notice.

Thanks Dan! I'm watching the latest Reaper Live now as I missed it and they even said wait till Monday in the video. DOH! But it is great to have the confirmation. And then right after that they gave you a thanks in the video for you graphics and I was like "Hey I'm just reading Dan's comment to me!" What a crazy random happenstance.

Are you already a backer? I think it only sends to people who haven't backed yet

I hit remind me initially before I pledged, and got the 48 hour notice.

I really hope that Chronoscope lovers are happy.  The set was unveiled in full pretty quickly, too.

Some things I'm uncertain about, but I like the general overall theme and how it isn't all that scattershot.  Not the most focused, but it's definitely on my list.

^What Dan Goodchild said.  I've never received a confirmation nrmail, just a shipping notice 1-2 weeks later from Reaper.

I shall name him squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my squishy.

"Cuddles" or even "Fluffy" seem like additional appropriate names for the beast..

Here's an updated list of the teased/rumored/predicted items, with links to screenshots - "(NWS)" denotes links to screenshots that aren't work/family safe, so click them at your own discretion:

Rumored items:

  • Some female rogues?
  • Sophie (rumored, possibly part of the Core Set?  Alternatively, there's no reason a pirate Sophie couldn't appear in Brinewind...)
  • A "fan favorites 2" expansion (it seems the Reapers talked about maybe doing this on a video I've not seen, with nothing more definite yet?)
  • A rumored Chronoscope set with a pulp/mythos theme.  (This was apparently teased in a video, but I didn't see the video for myself.)
  • a rumored Model A car (apparently teased in a video I didn't see for myself; possibly part of a Chronoscope/pulp/Mythos encounter?)
  • I thought I saw someone say there might be more Kid Adventurers coming up, but that looked unconfirmed and rumorish; if true, these seem likely to be Core Set figures....
  • another rumored piece of siege equipment, possibly a battering ram?
  • a Rakhshasa (?) Cheshire Cat (apparently from a separate project by the artist and shown off at Reapercon, and unlikely to appear in this Kickstarter)

Note that just because Reaper teased something, doesn't mean it will appear in this Kickstarter, and these teases may be incomplete or otherwise subject to change without warning, so don't get attached to any of the above.

As always, the rumored items could very likely be wishful thinking, a "game of telephones" gone wrong, or other fan shenanigans, so I wouldn't believe them until Reaper actually teases some screenshots or mentions them in an official update.

Most of the teased items have already appeared, the remaining ones are an odd and eclectic mix that seems kind of hard to imagine showing up separately, and seems unlikely to fit together.  I wonder how many of these remaining items will make it into the Kickstarter after all?

In Lovecraft's stories, at least, they look more or less human enough at first, but devolve from there into something quite bestial as they reach adulthood and begin reveling in their innate ghoulishness.

In the mythology, they would be attractive enough to fool unwary travelers and trick them into getting close enough for the Ghuls to grab and drag into tombs to eat - the Ghul legends sounds suspiciously similar to the Rusalka, Sirens, deer woman, film noir Femme Fatales....

In the pulp literature, true to the spirit of exploitation, ghouls look like whatever will sell the most magazines:  luridly repulsive male ghouls, luridly sexy female ghouls with a hint of uncanny valley to them....

As long as we don't get too stuck on the word "ghoul", this sort of "captive of the savage women" thing was quite popular in pulps:

Well Im going with the fantasy D&D version.  Which dont look like that.  Not that its a big deal....it just would be nice if there was consistency.  Not that they couldn't be used for something else though.  I was sort of hoping for some unique ghouls and or other undead.  Ghouls/ghasts are under represented.

Possibly maybe,..

Sea Giant's spear is probably as big as the mast of the small sloop!

To me: It looks way bigger than the mast that is provided with the Sloop **Captain’s Gig. The Giant is carrying a broken mast which had a round fighting top (or crow’s nest). It looks like something smaller than even the mizzenmast mast on the Frigate.

**They have verbally referred to it as a Sloop a number of times. This is a gaff and a mistake. On the Friday broadcast they were using the term launch and thankfully not calling it a Sloop.

@Reaper

@reaper__Jon

@Reaper Justin

@Reaper Ron

Guys, you are all awesome for creating all these seafaring minis and models, truly. But it is time to get the nautical terminology sorted. Y'all are grabbing terms and names a bit randomly in places.  I’m here to help. :poke:

Small Craft / Ship’s Boats / Open Boats

Listed smallest to largest:

Dinghy

Rowboat

Jolly Boat

3) Captain’s Gig

4) Whaler or Whaleboat

5) Launch

Cutter (same word is also used for a small ship)

Admiral’s Barge

Longboat

You ought to go with 3, 4, or 5 for the small craft with one small mast you’ve been previewing.

A Sloop is a sailing ship that is bigger than a Cutter but smaller than a Frigate. (But it would probably be able to carry a dinghy and a rowboat.) Probably faster and sleeker than a Brig (a sailing vessel with two masts).

A Cutter is a little ship, maybe two to six guns. But the word Cutter is also used for an open boat wide enough to have oarsmen on each side (two per bench) but it would be smaller than a longboat.

A Longboat is a Big open boat. Ten oarsmen, five per side. It is large enough to mount a small cannon in the bows OR to do the job of hauling a full size ship’s anchor without sinking.

The fishing boat from Dreadmere is a rowboat or a dinghy.

Personnel

#733 in the Brinewind Expansion needs a name change.

He is a big tough looking sailor holding an implement that is either a boarding pike or a boat hook. You guys explained he was an NCO crewman such as would be in charge of a small boat. A petty officer.

He is not a Pilot

Coxswain, Boatswain, or Bosun is what he is. (Bosun is just a contraction of Boatswain.)

A Pilot is an Officer. The main character in the James Clavell Novel Shogun was an example of a Pilot. The ship’s Pilot was the guy who understood celestial navigation; his gear would be sextant, telescope, and charts. He would be the guy deciding how much sail to set, giving specific orders to the helmsman, picking the heading to get maximum speed from the available winds, ...navigating the ship. A Pilot would answer to the Captain, but a wise Captain would leave the specifics of getting a ship in or out of a harbor to his Pilot.

I don't watch the videos - if anyone's got a screenshot of the wagon, I'll move it from "rumored items" up to "teased"....

I think my ideal ghoul, orc, hobgoblin, morlock, and dero minis would share the same basic design and be interchangeable with each other, and they almost never appear on the table at the same time with each other - as far as I'm concerned, these creatures all fill roughly the same niche in the game as low-level, subhuman, cave-dwelling, cannibal savages who exist mainly for PCs to beat to a pulp without feeling guilty over it.  Why buy, make room for, and then try to store50 models to do the same basic job that a half-dozen models would be good enough for?
