Reaper Bones 5: Enthusiasm and Commentary thread

I just did 120, will add more in PM as funds allow.

I definitely want the ship,  however I hope it doesn't end up like Baba Yaga's hut in Bones 4, where everything was glued and ended up a 2lb useless hunk of plastic. Totally un-playable, and very mediocre sculpt. If they do it right it would be a great competitor to the falling star. At the KS price it is a steal (if it is playable).

I'd like to see a poll of favorite expansions from this KS, including the Encounters, but not individual BIG items like dragons and pirate ships.

For me it was BOTH the Brinewind sets, and I think they were Grump's too.

Then Dungeon Dwellers, even if it is better for new GMs. This set makes me feel like a kid again!

Then the Dark Depths, it ties in with Brinewind and the ship. Three sets that each build on the others.

Then the Greek set. Individually some of my favorite models, but no real urge to do a Greek themed game. I think it is higher on Grump's list.

On second thought, the Dwarf King's Crypt on top, then the vampires, THEN the other Encounters.

The Encounters are all on the same level of awesome, with maybe the vampires on top. I think future Chronoscope expansions should ALL be Encounters. Keep them THEMED!

Fan Favorites, the expansion with no theme! ::D: It's wonderful and I hope it remains a tradition! Completely destroys my It Needs A Theme argument!

Chronoscope, a LOT better this time, but still a bit scattershot. BUT some of it would have been SO easy to bundle as encounters, with Trailer Park Zombie Apocalypse being at the top. Trailer, zombies, survivors, done!

Daimyo set suffered from the dinos, I'm afraid, they were not a good fit. Needed more PC types, and more themed undead. GREAT monsters, some I KNOW we will be getting retail. Or maybe we will add it in the PM, those monsters are all pretty sweet.

So here's the current damage.  We got caught up in the (literal) last minute funding push and went from $250 in to $1000 in.  Since we knew we'd be way over that long term, seemed reasonable (I think we may need a refresher on what constitutes "reasonable" but that's for another thread perhaps.)  :poke:

So current plan is 1798.77.  We have $1000 in the pipeline, which gives a bit of time to come up with the other ~$1000.

Whew, that looks even worse all typed out!

Hey, Kickstarter veterans:

When you add extra funds after the Kickstarter has concluded, how often is your card charged for the extra funds?

Once per add?

Once per month?

All at the end, when the Pledge Manager closes?

I'm trying to plan a monthly "purchase" list through the Pledge Manager.

Once per add.  It's like purchasing at a store (literally I suppose, since it is a store).

So there was a snafu with my card (of course my card company sent me a new card during the last month...) so the initial charge was declined because the expiration dates didn't match.  I'm 99% positive that the issue has been corrected, and KS has successfully charged my credit card, but this card doesn't show pending charges immediately in my on-line account portal, so I can't actually SEE it there... and my paranoid self wants to make sure that I'm "in the clear" and not let this linger and forget about it, in case something is still wrong.

After I think I got things resolved, I got a KS email titled "Yes! Reaper Miniatures Bones 5: Escape from Pizza Dungeon has been successfully funded." ...and in the further-down bits of the email it has a section on my pledge details:

Quote

Your pledge details
Amount pledged
$XXX.00
Pledge status
Collected

...

I'm assuming this means I'm good, and this is proof that KS has successfully charged my CC, and I am officially a funding backer at this point, yes?

Like I said, this is my first Kickstarter, and the first declining of the charge to my card has me paranoid.

I've done quite a few kickstarters and that's always signalled a good transaction.  If all else fails, you could contact KS directly.  You can always check with your bank also.  If something odd happens, Reaper will most likely work with you to get it corrected - just save all of the information.  Even if it turns out goofed up after the funding deadline, I'd wager they'll help you get it all fixed up right.  They do want to sell their products and after all, a happy customer is a powerful marketing tool.

It'll be fine.  :winkthumbs:

While it does take some work by the end user to fix a bit... I don't think it qualifies for either of these. Just my opinion.

In terms of money I spent zero dollars.

What?

 Oh. Let me explain.

I have a paycheck clearing right now for about the amount I spent on this KS. I had to take so much LWOP that pay period that after the 40% deduction I take on each paycheck for taxes, insurance, retirement, union, other insurance, etc I expected a paycheck of zero money.

I didn't get a zero money paycheck. I got about what I pledged on the KS. Best part is, my bank informed me of my unexpected money after the KS ended. So obviously fate decreed I use my 'zero money' paycheck on this KS.

To be fair, I am going to owe sooooo much in the pledge manager ::P:

The adventurer idea reminds me a lot of the old Ral Partha Miniatures Three-Stage Adventurer sets from the '80s, in which the same character is sculpted three times - a novice, and experienced adventurer, and a powerful and confident veteran.  Those were cool, I miss them!  I'm also reminded of Ral Partha's similar line of sets of Male and Female Adventurers with matching race/class and gear.

All that aside, I'm thinking that, in light of the success of the interlocking themed aquatic/ship expansions in this Kickstarter, Reaper might find some success with...

  1. building one or more parties of adventurers - five or six characters each, and putting them in the core set with a mix of townsfolk, generic NPC villains, common/popular monsters, and that sort of thing.
  2. These adventurers would, I suggest, match the Kickstarter's interlocking themes:  for example, in this Kickstarter, it might have been a party of pirate adventurers, plus a party of Greek or Daimyo adventurers, with some dockside townies, and other sea or pirate-themed NPCs....
  3. Make the player-characters in each party a well-rounded mix of common race-class combinations, and some unusual ones:  there might be a beardy-wizard and axe-dwarf and duel-wielding elf ranger in the party, but maybe also a halfling paladin, a dwarf bard, an elf monk....  (again, for the starring party, they would ideally fit the theme:  a beardy sea-wizard in a tricorn hat and eyepatch, a duel-wielding elf swashbuckler with cutlasses, an axe-dwarf with a sailor's outfit and hooked hand, a dwarf bard with a squeeze-box accordion dancing a drunken sea-jig while his parrot sidekick sits on his shoulder...  just let the artists/sculptors use their imaginations and go crazy inventing their characters!)
  4. Feature the primary party of characters and their adventures in their themed expansions/encounters in the Kickstarter's cartoon, fleshing out some personalities and storytelling, etc.
  5. Not all the encounters and expansions have to relate to this party's story line, but I have a feeling that if maybe a half-dozen of the expansions/encounters/options in the Kickstarter are themed around the party....  This Kickstarter, for example, had a pretty good balance, I think, of aquatic/pirate stuff to more general interest stuff.
  6. Likewise, not everything in the Core Set would relate to the party's adventures in any obvious way, but the core set probably should include some minis that do match the Kickstarter theme:  for this Kickstarter, it might have been some of those dockside/pirate non-combatants/villagers, some popular horde monsters appropriate to the theme, say some of those fish-men, and some crab swarms, that sort of thing, mixed in with the usual kobolds, orcs, goblins and generic fantasy guys that make the Core Set go 'round.

For example, imagine a Dreadmere-themed Kickstarter:  only a portion of it is Dreadmere stuff, but the core set includes a Dreadmere party of adventurers and some Dreadmere style townsfolk, villains and monsters, some Dreadmere encounters, a Dreadmere expansion with a creepy old swamp shack and some monsters and terrain bits....  All supported with a Dreadmere adventure comic strip build around the characters:  there've been a lot of backers asking for more Dreadmere, and I bet that anyone in for that hypothetical Dreadmere expansion or one of the enocunters, will be in for the whole thing!  I think the backers like the themes and storytelling enough, that many of them would have been happy to get a combination of the core set, with all the related themed stuff....

I feel like the female Landsknecht in the Fan Favorite Expansion will be one of the most underrated best miniatures in this Kickstarter.

hard to tell when it's just concept art. Things can change drastically from concept art to final product

i think i did pretty well this KS in avoiding pure concept art things. there are a few in Dark Depths that i'll just have to hope turn out okay.

Hard to avoid 3D renders since that's most of what the KS is, will just have to hope they stay close to what has been shown when printed

There were some fantastic sculpts in this, including a lot of things that are either new or reworked in a stellar fashion (the Goroloth for example).  I too have a huge amount of painted minis that are being duplicated, but I'm particularly excited to have them in bones black - for the detail if nothing else.

LOL, I feel you buddy.

Well you're not wrong!  I love that there were so many pledging, that number looks great.

Agreed, this kickstarter was great and I was transfixed entirely too often.  Looks like your list has some great stuff on it!

I agree with what most of the other guys have already responded with.  You're saving so much getting these through the kickstarter, it's almost like the paint and supplies for them is free (ok, I know that's justification but it's largely true).  Collecting at a super cheap price really does help free up monies for other things.  Since the next kickstarter won't be around for 3+ years and much of the bulk of this offering won't even be at retail until at minimum that far out, you're best served by investing while it's cheap.

Most likely 2 years. All of them have been 2 yes apart.
