Reaper Bones 5: Enthusiasm and Commentary thread

This was a different sort of Bones KS for me. There were fewer extreme excitement "I MUST HAZ! TAKE MY MONEY!" minis for me overall, but there's far more that I simply WANT. Like the siege weapons, for example. I didn't go "Oh, I'm excited because I super love them and can't wait to paint them up!" so much as "Oh, I'm excited because those look super useful and I can't wait to field them during a game!"

So in general, more useful minis for us this KS (even leaving out most of the nautical stuff, which I want to PAINT but we have very little game use for). And that's DANGEROUS.

I wouldn't consider freebies either, that's not real retail releases. That's spend $40 to get one, then they're gone until they actually get released to retail

I've picked up the last couple "freebies" off retail sites  (thou not last month) as I didn't want to place orders with Reaper.  Other sites were cheaper prices, free shipping, non-Reaper items, etc etc). The retailer had a stock of the "freebie" figures for sale. I'm sure they got em in bulk from Reaper if they placed their own orders with Reaper.

I can't wait to see a measure of scale so I can make an informed decision on this one

Looking at the price, I'm sure he'll join Mini-thulu in size. Impressive mini but when in hand, it's disappointing. I hope I'm wrong.

This is Mini-thulu

(thou he does look good vs CAV or 15mm figures.....::D:)

According to Twitch, there is a giveaway going now for the top 100 Bones AND top 50 DHL metals figures.

Go to twitch.tv/reapermini and enter #sub in the chat. They DON'T have to be on at the time, the chat will register your entry whether they're streaming or not.

The drawing is this Thursday, Nov. 7 during Reaper Live! and AGAIN on Friday, Nov. 15.

Go Enter!

ETA: They're going to give away a set like that EVERY MONTH as long as the sub count stays at or above 1500.

Unfortunately, you actually have to sign up for twitch, it won't work on the YouTube.

I think there was a picture of the new Kaiju next to one or more other models (or maybe it just made a guest apperance on Reaper Live?)

In either case, my (mistaken?) impression was that it is not super-giant, like Khanjira.

I'd have to assume, at $10, that it'll still be larger than the "mini-thulu" above. Probably closer to Blightfang, maybe...

I never saw it since I don't watch Reaper Live (I've seen 1 & I was bored. ::D:). Again, I hope I'm wrong, it doesn't need to be huge, just a decent size. No Mini-thulu size. Plus, I noticed Mini' is priced at 7 retail & this is 10 KS price.

A lot of stuff is sufficiently generic.

if that was a problem, how can their red dragon have obvious head design from the 3e/4e/5e art?   or how they have mind flayers under a different name in their metal line, etc.  Hell - how about hill, frost, fire, cloud, storm giants?!?!?!

doesnt seem like it bothers them that much.   I really think its overstated the IP thing. as long as names, etc arent used.  of course i dont know but hasbro doesnt seem to be like GW in that regard or LOTS of companies, custom 3d print companies, etc all would have been shut down by now or needed to stop certain lines of figures (and this includes reaper)

Since many of the monsters, such as the fill-in-the-blank giants are based on mythological archetypes that go back hundreds and even thousands of years there is a limit to what can ~reasonably~ be viewed as intellectual property.

The entire Greek Mythology Expansion is a perfect example of this principal in action.

Dragons fall into the same category.

A company can file for copyright on a specific design, but not on "dragons" per se.  Any art by a different entity that is similar but not an exact enough copy to cause a "reasonable person" [legal standard in play]  to confuse the two is not deemed for legal purposes to be a copy or an infringement.  There may be notable similarities that allow the two to be identified as similar enough to classify them into the same sub-category but that is still not infringement.

Otherworld uses flight bases.

Not cheap - $52 for twenty of the little pests, on  Paizo.

The problem is that you do need them in large numbers.

Bones would have been ideal.

I am sometimes tempted to make vampiric owl stirges - the original myths that spawned the Zelazny strige that spawned the D&D stirge. ::):

The Auld Grump

I'm way behind now that the Kickstarter is over and I can catch up on "life".

Here's a "thought"; looking at the picture I envisioned several of the flyers coming off of a single base via a candelabra style support arrangement.

I haven't seen this done but it seems to me to be a reasonable "solution" to the problem of large masses of small flyers.

Sheesh - for some reason, I missed top hat in there.

I figure if you can't decide which hat to add to a model, you might as well buy multiple copies and do one of each.   Bones minis make this an affordable option.

Have you see Izzy's "fun" artwork for Nyarlathotep? She drew a top hat & monocle with it. I say that makes Nyar' a tad bit more vile.

I just hope it's bigger than the Kaiju in Rising Sun's Kickstarter. Of course, as my Godzilla loving friend says, "if the mini is not as large as a small child it's not a kaiju."

Edit: There's a reason I sold my Khanjira, despite being super excited to get it and paint it up - it wasn't big enough for the Tarrasque in my campaign setting, which was large enough to eat a canyon into a mountainside...

Thoughts on CAD models for Reaper - Bones 4 went really hard into them, and one of my main complaints is with the wings. They're too thick. I was working with the Rulers of Hell the other day, and was really disappointed by how their wings turned out - they're super thick, to the point that various nicks and tears on the membranes don't even line up between front and back, and generally look really unpleasant. Argent had a similar problem, which is likely the source of his massive amount of drooping that's been reported.

For Bones 5, I really hope they work to keep the wings thinner on their CAD-rendered figures. The hand-sculpted ones seem to have been consistently firm, reliable, and not over-thick. I hope they manage to replicate that going forward with the increased zBrush sculpts and such when they're finally produced in physical form. From the printed dragons, it looks like they might have been better about it this time, but I'm definitely curious how it'll overall turn out.

Wing issues aside, how do you like the Rulers of Hell? I see them on Ebay relatively cheap, and I'm thinking about snagging them.

I haven't had the chance to paint them up yet, but they look pretty good. There's a weird sculpt incongruity with the male Ruler, since he has a strap running across his back that is completely intersected by his wing, making it seem like it phases right through his limb. The female ruler looks pretty good, but her hands feel a little small-ish. Not so much to be terrible, but definitely a little off to my brain. The wings are my biggest complaints overall.

I have a bundle of Bones spare wings that I got at Origins 2 years ago, but I don't really have any that are large enough to fit them and be nearly as big as I'd overall like at this point. Not sure if I'll just grin and bear it with the thick Bones 4 wings, or try to modify them still...

The only thing I don't like is the strange placement of the male's shoulder strap. It literally runs right through his wing in a very nonsensical way. I'm still trying to figure out how I want to address that before I paint it up.
