They also mentioned they wanted the the third option of the ship, besides the “normal” and the translucent, to be a glow in the dark version, which in my own opinion is a mistake.

I liked the earlier idea of it being done in a translucent green. Glow in the dark plastic doesn’t look very impressive under normal lighting and I find the novelty of having something glow ingame wears off pretty quickly cause playing in the dark gets tiresome quick and people want the lights back on.

I do think that glow in the dark probably isn't the best plan. I thought the plan was the spectral green, like they used for the ghost pirates in Bones 4.

As for clear plastic, they could go back to what they did during the old days and put a picture of the miniature painted onto the packaging, so you know what it looks like even if the mini itself obscures some details.

I know it costs marginally more, but I feel like, if all Bones minis would just be made in translucent clear plastic, we could do whatever we wanted with any of them. It might be an overall better solution, IMHO.

Making everything translucent would mean i would stop buying bones unfortunately. I use the minis for gaming. I dont always have the desire or time to paint up something for an encounter. A group of white or grey bugbears looks better than some clear blobs on the table, which means that they would be largely unusable by me without more prep. White and grey are usable right out the box.

The wizkids minis would move up in preference for me if that is the case.  A group of translucent minis appeals I guess to some, so wont begrudge those who want them, but on a personal level, I hope they limit the number of translucent stuff...

Fair enough. I don't see what the real difference is between a plain white blob or a clear blob, when it gets right down to it, though.

I'm not convinced the translucent ship will look all that great. The details are already obscured by the material (which you can salvage a bit with a paintjob), but if you want to preserve the translucent effect for large portions of the hull, you'll see the interior. No idea how much tabs and connection points this ship will have, but you'd see them in clear, wouldn't you? And even if those aren't the problem, the interior of that ship seems fairly packed. So much material in inside the ship will probably make it all look rather blobby and mashed together. At least in my head it'll look like that. It's not like Kyphrixis where you can look mostly through the whole dragon. Imagine you'd see organs inside that thing instead.

I do like translucent miniatures for elementals, ghosts and the likes. I would prefer untinted clears, but eh. But I have to agree that'd I really, really dislike seeing all Bones in clear and I doubt they'd take the step, if only because it'll make their product look like cheap plastic toys in the packaging (and not everyone trusts a painted picture on the outside).

The plain white isnt really a blob though. You can still make out details at table level. So a plain white goblin is distinguishable as a goblin. The translucent one has no discernable details at table level. So you would not be able to tell what it is just at a glance. Not a problem if you are painting it up, but if you are using it in a game, and the purpose is to represent a goblin, then it does not serve that purpose.

If I wanted to paint a goblin, and the translucent goblin was super detailed and I really wanted that particular sculpt, then I MAY consider buying it. Though "super detailed" is not really a thing i usually say about Bones models...  but if I am just looking for a group of cheap models to represent goblins, and my choices are A) translucent goblins that you cant tell are goblins out of the box. or B) white or grey goblins that you can tell are goblins.... my choice would be B every time.

Hi, the Pirate Ship is Very Very Cool.

1) You really Really, REALLY Must do a Sophie Figurehead.

2) On a full-rigged ship, each of the two forward masts will have a Course Sail (The largest, lowest sail), and above that a Topsail, and usually a Topgallant above that... The third mast (Mizzenmast) would usually have a Lateen sail as the lowest sail, and might have a square Topsail above.
Sophie's Revenge, in the renders I've seen only has half her masts... Only mounting the Course Sails... There should be Top Masts above to mount the Tops and Topgallants... Will the Top Masts be included in the kit?

I think they’re going for playability over accuracy. If you really want an official answer though, you should probably send your query to help@reapermini dot com or try to ask during the bones 5 twitch stream that happens on thursdays.

I would also stop buying Bones if they were ALL translucent.

I have painted a few of the translucents and I find it hard to see the details, I rather use a white or grey plastic.

And I still feel that even when painted the actual detail on translucents is somehow a bit softer.

No, the Bones 5 stream is 2nd and 4th Friday.  Reaper. live is Thursday.  They would answer the question at both though

Yeah, this is kind of the point. If you prime them, it doesnt matter. But that means you have to at least prime them to be able to use them. If I am gonna paint them anyway then its not a big deal. But It means I HAVE to add some work to be able to use them. I cant go buy a couple packs of lizard men on the way to my game and be able to use them when i get there, if they are translucent. Well, I could, but if you cant tell they are lizard men, then why bother? Might as well use any 6 minis to represent them as the players cant see they are lizardmen anyway... and would ask "are these ghosts?' or Since I told them that they are in fact lizard men "are these ghost lizard men?"

I know people have different reasons to get minis and different purposes. Translucents are probably great for those that do cool effects with painting. But from a strictly gaming point of view... unless its something like a ghost or an elemental, it does not really add anything but more work.

Bones are marketed as "ready to use or paint right out of the package". Whether that is true or not depends a lot on the user, as much as the material, but I think @Smokestack's point is a good one. I have definitely thrown some white plastic Bones on the table with no prep or painting when I needed something to stand in during a game.

(I have also painted Bones, both with and without primer.)
