I have a bunch of shelves above my painting area that are full of unpainted miniatures. I like to be able to see what I have available and choose what to paint next from that. It's not large enough for all the minis I have though, so as it empties out it tends to get filled up again. As for keeping the dust off of them I just give the minis a good wipe down with a microfiber cloth and maybe a spritz of canned air and they're dust free and ready to go. This isn't going to work well for bones 5 though as I totally went overboard on it. So I'm putting together some storage space under one of my workspaces for plastic totes full of minis. I figure I'll inventory everything and then put unpainted minis together in ziploc bags based on genre or miniature type and then just keep a spreadsheet of where everything is. It won't be as detailed as the egg cartons though, it will read more like: box 1, bag 1A, bones goblins. We'll see how this works out.

My painted collection all resides inside of large, lit display cases in my home. I tend to organize them by genre or specific character archetypes for ease of pulling together stuff for dnd games. 
 

For transporting painted miniature, as if for a moving, I like to individually wrap each piece in the same tissue paper I would use for my ornaments or gift bags. 
 

My unpainted figures are sorted into bins and large ziplock bags based on genre, monster type or specific archetypes in the bonus room that I use as my hobby place.

While those are both good ideas there is a pretty decent chance the entire box will get thrown directly at a wall a split second after being opened, and the model smashed to bits. So with that in mind the durability and inexpensiveness of bones really makes the bones 5 spiders the best choice for pranking your sister. I discussed this with my wife last night and we agreed we'll have to select some quality packing material in case this happens. I was thinking something soft to protect the spider. But my lovely wife suggested we get a couple of bags of those little spider rings you see at Halloween, cut them off the ring bit, and pack it in those. That way when she inevitably sends it flying to get it away from her, hundreds of little spiders will be scattered all over the house and will likely take months to find them all, especially once her cats get a hold of them. While this does nothing to protect the big spider, it's much more devious. 

 

Anyways, since this is a thread about bones 5 and not about hilarious things to do to your siblings (don't worry, she'll figure out a way to get me back, this is an ongoing thing) I just want to say I am super excited about the impending shipments. I'm in the process of tearing apart and rebuilding my hobby area to increase the storage for the massive order I placed and have doubled the amount of work surface I have for larger models. I should be able to get started on my first pirate ship shortly after it arrives!

I know I have that spider coming, because reasons. Probably not just because multicoloured LF spiders.. 

 

Also, I think, terrain... I'm pretty sure I have the Emrith Kul set in the box too. So, all the spiders.

Also, most (All? Maybe?) of the dragons, because DRAGON!!!!

Thanks @Thoramel!  That's a perfect solution!  Time to start saving egg cartons.

Back on to Bones 5 - as I await my largest Bones order yet, I can't help but think about my previous orders and how many are still white and grey.  About how much of your past Bones collection have you painted?  I think I might be somewhere in the 10% - 25% range.  Though that doesn't include the other brands in my collection that are largely unpainted.  I have a soft spot for bones and they tend to get favored.

LOL, yes!  Egg cartons were my first army transport system.  I still have a goblin army in storage. 2 plastic goblins fit in a single slot.  Mounted cavalry are harder to store, but it's possible.

This is my first bones Kickstarter and I am really excited the big box of minis. I’m no stranger to the pile of shame, but I’m looking forward to having so many choices of want I can paint on any particular day. Per my current collection I have about 75% painted and 20 or so that are still grey or primed. Gonna be a lot more soon if those containers ever make landfall!

I try not to prime until I'm ready to commit.  Cleaning is one thing, but when i prime and they sit i just feel guilty.  Not sure why? I think the process of priming gets me excited and during priming i start pouring ideas in.

I love the idea in principle, but I also know I don't eat enough eggs at home to make it a quick solution.

 

My current plan is that I'll order plenty of egg foam figure trays for my ever increasing number of Reaper cases I have.

 

Not sure how I'll fit a pirate ship in there, but I like a challenge!

I have a ton of minis that aren't painted yet. Not just Reaper stuff, mind you. I did back Bones IV for the core set + one expansion + some extras, and I got the Bones III core set on the aftermarket. In addition to having bought many other Bones minis between those.

 

That said, I have painted up a lot of the Bones minis I have! I tend to paint up monster minis before anything else, because they're generally quicker to paint up than a PC/NPC or other mini with lots of details. During RVE I painted up a total of 27 Reaper miniatures: 2 large elementals, 8 small creepy crawlies, 1 tiny dog, 12 giant frogs, one small dragon, 2 jellies, and 1 large octopus. Discounting the octopus, the 26 other miniatures were painted up in two days. :) 

 

I would guess I've probably painted up about 50% of all my Reaper minis(including Bones and other).

Man, I really need to update my mini tracking sheet with the minis I've painted...

 

As for Bones 5, I've again been thinking about what's the first thing I'll be painting. It'll probably end up being the Shadows of Ravenshome terrain, but I'm gonna be really tempted to get one of the big dragons painted up quickly.

 

Then again, depending on when it's delivered, I might be right in the middle of a move, so maybe something smaller like the dragon from the Dungeon Dwellers set?

This is how I am.  I don't consider unpainted = pile of shame.  It's only shame if I've based and primed it and then it sits.  Or worse.  Half painted and abandoned (this happens very rarely).

You've already gotten some really good answers, I'd like to add that keeping an eye out for foam to use to make your own cases is a good idea, too. A lot of places get fragile things shipped to them in foam, and the foam just gets tossed. If you can get a line on where to get some, it's a good option.

I open everything and inspect it for damage and to be sure everything is present. After that, it goes right back in the box it came in. I only just recently got most of Bones 1 and 2 actually sorted and put away. I put them in plastic 'parts bins'.

I take everything out, make sure it’s all there, then sort things into ziplock baggies by type, and throw them into a drawer to never be seen again. 

 

How soon after the package gets inventoried just depends on what is going on. My Bones4 box was delivered the day I went into labor, so it took a while to go through those bones. In fact, I didn’t get a chance to go through all of them until just last fall. This time I don’t have that particular complication, but who knows what’s gonna happen!

Glad to see I'm not the only one still working on Bones 1 stuff.
