the_largest_rodent
Miniature storage isn’t cheap, but it’s necessary, especially if you paint your minis. I bought a plastic drawer tower, superglued magnetic sheets into the drawer’s bottoms, then superglued steel washers to the bottoms of my minis. The drawer tower I bought recently has 8 drawers and each drawer is 12” wide by 14” long by 3” deep - enough for 168 1” based minis per drawer or 1,344 1” based minis per tower. The tower was ~$70, the magnetic sheets ~$30, ~$20 worth of super glue, and 1,400 1” steel washers came to ~$150. Total cost ~$300 with some time and labor. Comparatively, buying Feldherr foam miniature storage cases to house a comparable amount of minis would run you ~$650-700. And unlike foam trays, magnetic storage won’t rub the paint off because the minis don’t come in contact with anything. 16
Moderator Chaoswolf Posted March 13, 2021 Moderator Share Posted March 13, 2021 (edited) A quick note about the picture I posted, since it came out a bit blurry: there are between 4 and 6 man sized figures in each compartment, depending on pose. With a bit of thought and a little experimentation, you can fit that number without forcing anything, or bending anything. Smaller stuff fits even more; bottom row second in from the left is 12-15 kobolds. Edited March 13, 2021 by Chaoswolf 4
Chris Palmer
I use a magnetic sheet and washer system similar to the_largest_rodent, but use boxes instead of the storage cabinets. The boxes are easier to transport to away games. For unpainted KS stuff, if stays, unassembled, in the Expansion or Core box it came in. Larger stuff that didn't come n a box, gets put in a ziplock in a cabinet. Edited March 13, 2021 by Chris Palmer
MoonglowMinis
Love all the magnets storage options. It's something I've wanted to do for awhile. Haven't had to transport things for games in over a year at this point so it's gone down on the priority list.

ttuckerman
About magnet storage. Don't put a magnet on the mini base. Just use a steel washer there. When in use the magnets interfere with each other. I use a 2" wide by 1/8" thick steel plate. I have two 10"x10"x15" wooden box that I have cut three kerfs into the side. This gives three layers of five bars each for a total of 15 15" bars. Medium PCs can fit 450 minis in a case. I don't do that because I have some of the bars for horses, cows, sheep, Bison, goats, dogs and other animals. The 2" gives room for the large animals to go across. It is very heavy if it is metal minis. For unpainted bones they just go into plastic boxes inside plastic boxes. 7

Back on to Bones 5 - as I await my largest Bones order yet, I can't help but think about my previous orders and how many are still white and grey. About how much of your past Bones collection have you painted? I think I might be somewhere in the 10% - 25% range. Though that doesn't include the other brands in my collection that are largely unpainted. I have a soft spot for bones and they tend to get favored. I'm proud of the fact that I finished my Bones 2 order before Bones 3 arrived. I finished probably about 75% or more of Bones 3 before Bones 4 arrived, though I still have some of it pending. Bones 4 has been taking me much longer. I'm trying to get through it, but I've been just a lot less motivated to paint lately. I tend to paint up monster minis before anything else, because they're generally quicker to paint up than a PC/NPC or other mini with lots of details. During RVE I painted up a total of 27 Reaper miniatures: 2 large elementals, 8 small creepy crawlies, 1 tiny dog, 12 giant frogs, one small dragon, 2 jellies, and 1 large octopus. Discounting the octopus, the 26 other miniatures were painted up in two days. :) I find monsters get painted a lot sooner because I prefer to leave "PC" minis until they're needed. Otherwise, I just stare at them trying to decide what color palette to use for them. 17 hours ago, ttuckerman said: About magnet storage. Don't put a magnet on the mini base. All of my minis except for the 3" bases or larger get a zinc washer installed into their bases. 1" round zinc washers for "medium" minis come in packs of 100 for about $10, and I can get 2" round and 3/4" round bases for large and small creatures, too. It gives Bones minis a nice low center of gravity, a unified diameter, allows them to be held by magnetic sheets, and are cost effective, too.

I paint a lot of bones. it looks like I am at about 75% painted. 272 unpainted bones. (as of January) 606 painted bones from the core sets. (240+ 201 + 152 +16) 10 painted dragons + add-ons and random retail purchases which although painted have not been counted. Bother It looks like I didn't count the Graveyard Expansion set either- its maybe 10% painted, but its not on my spreadsheets. I am looking forward to starting the next core set. I didn't order the whole set from bones 4, turns out I miss the structure trying to finish it provided.

I've painted everything I really wanted to paint. There's some goblins and bad guys left that will never see tabletop. B2 & 3 I did not get much of, no core sets, only a handful of add-ons. Since it was all stuff I wanted most of it has been painted. B4, still working through, I got core and a couple big expansions. Down to stuff I'm not crazy about and the larger time consuming models. Volume wise, I have more pre-Bones metal left to paint.
Loim
I have so much of Bones 1-3. I didn't back Bones IV for specifically that reason. I have a ton of Bones V coming. That's not even taking into account the mountains of metal figures I have, and other plastic kits like Oathmark. I'M IMMORTAL!

I bought some 3” and 4” washers from Amazon, but they’re really beefy i mean, they work, but they’re kind of pricey and overall the weight makes it not the most practical. I’ve looked at my local hardware stores, as well as Home Depot and Lowe’s without success. I’ve considered getting some sheet metal and having someone cut me some circles but I wouldn’t know where to start with that either!
Moderator Chaoswolf Posted March 15, 2021 Moderator Share Posted March 15, 2021 Friendly reminder that commercial links aren't allowed here. Ambiguous hints like 'search for xyz on google' or 'check the big river company' are fine.
