Reaper Bones 5: Enthusiasm and Commentary thread

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at the bill now I think something that is jacking up the cost is Reaper seemed to have declared the retail cost of the goods rather then what I paid them. So I'm paying considerably more HST.

I could be wrong but I can't seem to figure out how ~$300 in kickstarter models leads to ~$90 in taxes.

Was it taxes or brokerage fees? If it was the brokerage fees, Reaper had no control over that, that's UPS bending you over on that one. There is a method to not have to pay those, you would have had to go to a Customs office and fill out the customs forms and pay the customs due yourself, but it sounds that isn't an option for you now if you already have it, and if so, I apologize for being too late to let you know that.

Brokerage fee was only $10 of the $100. So $90 of taxes on $300 of goods.

Update #128 has the expected tax rates for various Canadian provinces. Maybe check that, and contest the charges with UPS?

I'm glad to see the dead shark is mostly detached already. I've got a plan to hang a dead pirate from that scaffolding so all my fish people can pose with it. Looks like if I'm careful with the hobby knife I may even be able to salvage the shark to use on it's own. Man, seeing those pictures and knowing everything should be in Denton soon-ish is getting me awful excited. Thanks for posting!

Unlikely UPS. This has happened with other Kickstarters when the company declares the retail price of the models rather then what I paid them. $90 makes sense if the box was $600 which is likely the retail cost of the contained models.

I assume this is beneficial for the company and screws the costumer. I'll know for sure when the box arrives on the 12th.

Regardless this is poor form on Reaper and they should understand that they've put their Canadian customers in a broccolity, unexpected, position.

Toronto here. Just got my UPS bill for over $100....so ~33% "tax" that Reaper just passed on to me without warning counter to previous kickstarters.

Case 1) They knew they were operating differently then the past and Canadians would have to pay this additional fee. In this case they should have said upfront. Shady Shady practice.

Case 2) This is a change they made recently....in which case that's complete nonsense. Shame on you.

I get that Canada is a small market, but this really sucks. At best Reaper is my "cheap minis for DnD that I'll use once" option. Kickstarter discount + 33% is far less persuasive as I can get higher quality sculpts / product locally for not much more. This poor turn of events has burned a lot of the good will I had with Reaper.

I just paid my UPS bill. When you click the "pay now" it breaks things down really nicely but it was confusing (I saw 2 brokerage fees listed, one for 10$and another for 11$)Mine was about 11$ brokerage and 56$ taxes. Which is less than I expected. In the end, if you pay online PRINT THE RECEIPT. I have ZERO records otherwise that it was paid. I have not had any email, there is no record of any fees paid in my UPS profile, and the PDF I printed says the driver might need a copy (WHY? THIS IS A TERRIBLE SYSTEM). Seriously. I don't have a working printer. I do not have the option to print things. I'm hoping that It will have to get processed before going out for delivery and I won't have some issue with having to go to a depot and weird schedules.

UPS is still an "avoid future kickstarters deal breaker" for me.

Prices on retail have been around 3x what we can get them for in in the kickstarter, just for some reference, so if they did declare retail, you'd be paying on a cost of around 900 dollars, not 600. At least this is from experience from previous KSs I've been in on. From what I've understood from others who've gotten stuff shipped to them out of country, Reaper tends to declare what you paid, not what it's worth in retail, although someone else would have to chime in on if that's the case this time around. I've never known Reaper to intentionally do anything to force customers to pay for more than the lowest humanly possible, and with the way shipping is due to COVID, it seems that they had to deal with the devil to actually be able to ship this stuff to you at all (ie, devil = UPS).

That’s a delicious idea. Consider it stolen and thank you for sharing.

How is this beneficial for the company?

Reaper doesn't get anything extra by declaring a higher price.  The only "benefit" a company gets by declaring a higher value is that it's less likely that some government bureaucracy comes after them for under-declaring the value.

I'm sympathetic to the situation Canadians are in regarding these fees, but it does no good to assume that any of this was done with malicious intent.

Confirmed the declared cost. Just a trash experience.

I know this is going to sound daft, but are you sure you only spent ~ 300 USD on the kickstarter? Could you have done several orders that totaled more and forgotten you did? If that Value for Duty is in Canadian dollars, it would have been around 546 dollars USD. Anyhow, I did several orders myself, and my initial pledge was 260 + shipping, but I ended up having ordered well over 800 dollars worth of stuff with multiple orders.

Mind you, I'm not trying to say you can't remember what you ordered, but I have spoken with people who've gotten their pledges and forgot they ordered something since it wasn't in the first part of their pledge and were surprised.

Just trying to fully understand your situation, and to make sure that maybe it's not a nefarious as it might seem. One other thought, maybe Reaper accidentally sent you more than you ordered (which someone actually already asked them about on the Twitch stream), and declared what they sent you and not what you actually paid for?

The Dungeon Dwellers Dragon.  This little guys doesn’t get much attention with all the bigger guys in the Kickstarter, but he really is a detailed little beauty.

The Sea Giant.  My mast was badly curved, so I couldn’t fit it in his hand.  This guy, outside of the pirate ship, has to be one of (if not thee) most spectacular minis from Bones V!

Isn't there an envelope with all the papers/the bill/inventory list taped to the outside of the package? That's what's always happening with my international packages, that's where the customs people get the declared value from and I usually have those available to me after delivery.

Three ready-for-adventure mini-game boxed sets for your RPG game night, featuring the Tri-Stat System used in BESM Fourth Edition RPG.

If you're looking for role-playing games that are concise enough to crack open and start playing right away, yet sufficiently robust and evocative to support longer campaign play as well, you've come to the right place.

Welcome to the Kickstarter for the first three Tri-Stat System Mini-Game Boxed Sets – a new line of compact and complete role-playing adventure games that are compatible with Dyskami Publishing's flagship BESM Fourth Edition anime and manga RPG. Tri-Stat System creator Mark MacKinnon has distilled and customised the complete system into distinct streamlined versions for each of the three adventure games – targeting their specific genres and background settings in easy-to-understand boxed sets.

Pixies, Wyrms, and Demonicity – it's time for your next great role-playing adventure!

Pixies, Wyrms, and Demonicity – These boxed set RPGs are games of adventure, exploration, battle, heroism, romance, and imagination. Yet unlike in a traditional board game, the possibilities for exploration and action in these role-playing game are endless.

Each of the three role-playing adventure games contains the following components:

a 32-page full-colour rulebook that gives your group everything you need to play, with sections on character abilities, magical spells/paranormal powers, weapons and equipment, enemy encounters, items and equipment, and guidelines for integrating the Tri-Stat System game with the compatible BESM Fourth Edition RPG
6 brief story scenarios so you can start playing adventures right away
6 pre-generated player character sheet handouts, with game stats and illustration
4 custom-etched dice specific to that boxed set

You can pledge for one, two, or all three of these boxed sets during the Kickstarter.

      ...

I know know nothing about these creators or the system, but I decided to back for Pixies entirely because of that picture of the corgi. 👀
