I got into painting minis in my teenage years from a friend, who introduced me to WH40k Eldar miniatures. I started buying those, and then figured I might as well start playing WH40K with the minis I was getting. So, I started playing that, until I went off to college. In college, D&D 3.0 came out, and I started actually using my 40K minis as stand-ins on the battlemat, which I'd never used prior to D&D 3.0. I then started getting tired of my players breaking my Eldar minis, so I started buying the DDM plastic minis. And, from there, I sort of got into buying Reaper minis and painting again, which I hadn't really been able to do in college as a whole. Now, I don't play WH40K, but I do play Pathfinder and I use my Reaper Bones and pewter minis, and almost never even touch my DDM figures anymore...

Reading Science Fiction & Fantasy lead me to RPGs. RPGs lead me to miniatures.  Miniatures lead me to painting.  An RPG (Aces & Eights) lead me to reading Westerns.  A person I met gaming lead me to thrillers (Clancy, Cussler, Brown (both Dan and Dale) etc.)

I came to the hobby via Star Trek models, my dads model railroad paints, and Hero Quest!

I think a basic love of reading fantasy novels and playing fantasy RPGs led me to this hobby. Reading led me to Dragonlance, which led to playing Baldur's Gate, which years later led to playing pen and paper RPGs with my brother and his friends, which ultimately led to a mini obsession. And now possibly leading me into foam crafting.

Clearly, reading was a gateway drug. They never tell you about that danger.

Boredom at a hobby shop is what led me to mini painting. I was the girl that came with her boyfriend, languishing in boredom when the store owner (GBO) came over and asked me if I was having a good time. Lol. He asked me if I had ever painted, and showed me his painting desk backlog.

13 years of marriage (and at least 4 armies later), I'm the painter and player, and we enjoy nerd hobbies together!

This all leads to one further question: did you wind up marrying the boyfriend at the time or the store owner that asked you about painting?

Let's see. Started with toy soldiers and board games, then D&D, then GW and Battletech and painting and more minis and games. All of this has lead to my current main hobby of reading forums about those things.

My father’s model railroading hobby led to a lot of father/son bonding time visiting hobby shops. That’s how I ended up investing my allowances in boxes of Airfix 1/72 scale plastic figures. That, in turned, prepared me for a chance encounter with a 5th grade classmate in 1971 who had a book of rules. The rest, they say, was history...followed eventually by fantasy after Messrs. Arneson and Gygax did their thing...

Started playing D&D the summer of '82 and it led me down the rabbit hole to miniatures.  I'd been a scale modeler prior to that, so I ended up just hanging out in a different section of the local hobby shop . . .

Yes.

By which i mean, it's hard to say. My dad had an HO scale model train layout, and every once in a while, he'd ask me to 'help' him with some painting or what have you (looking back, I was probably base coating stuff for him). So I've had miniature things around and in my life forever. I started playing D&D at about 10 or so, and it wasn't long before I discovered that they made figures to go along with it, and here we are.

I guess I officially started with a modified version of Chainmail the Pre-D&D mini wargame. but had collected only a handful of minis before plunging into D&D instead.

Eventually D&D led me back into mini-collecting and painting.

Now I painting gets far more of my money and time.

Playing D&D got me this far, I had always collected the WotC prepaints for use in our games. One day I discovered a couple of pro-painted Reaper figures at the game store (which I bought), and that started to spark my interest. It wasn't until after I went into Bones 3 that I got into actually painting, since I realized that I had a poop ton of minis coming my way and needed to learn how to paint before they arrived.

Can't really recall or remember, so I'll blame tabletop gaming for getting me into painting individual things for the joy of it, not so your primered army of doom wound up becoming an army (of doom).

There was the painting models side of things, but lack of support from parents and various other things as a young child had me step away from it for some time.  So yeah, I'll "blame" 40k and Warhammer Fantasy.... And finding out about specialist games like Necromunda, Blood Bowl, and Mordheim got me pushed in the "individual guy of doom" territory.

The store owner. ::D:

Nobody marries the guy that leaves you in the corner instead of introducing you to the hobby. :poke:
