Hard Mode Challenge!
February holds "National Margarita Day" and often hand-in-hand with the tropical drink, is gaudy 'Aloha' clothing! Paint a mini if your choice where the majority of the exposed surface must be free-handed in the mannerism of such! Yes that's a lot of freehand.
(I honestly just wanna see someone paint a slime covered in freehanded palm trees >.>)

Good luck

The game is made up and the points don't matter

Okay, I'll bite. I haven't started painting yet this year. I have a 25 gallon crate of unpainted minis. I'm running a mini-heavy Pathfinder game. I have a half-converted griffon-rider on my desk. I can't call him 'gray' but I might call him a Dim Warden ::P: Wait that sounds bad. Hmm...

I'm back, hoping to get back on track with actually getting stuff painted (I only completed 3 figures last year ).

Targets:

  • Terran CAVs.  I have 10 at various stages of painting. I'm hoping to get some of those completed.
  • Star Wars Legion: just started prepping some Stormtroopers. Hopefully will get somewhere with those
  • 3D printed stuff.  I have two large totes of 10mm Sci-Fi terrain plus several 28mm vehicles. Hoping to get something painted.

And what actually happened:

  • Still no CAVs completed, but they are closer to finished.
  • I actually completed a unit of Stormtroopers.
  • I printed yet more things to paint.  I tested Badger's 3D Prime.  Nothing got painted.

So I missed the goal, as I only got 7 figures painted.
But I did get something painted at least.  So I'll be adding one to the goal for March-April.

So, I am finishing my campaign over the next couple of weeks and want to have appropriate minis for the final encounters.  I'll have to look and see what exactly I need, but a Dracolich and Death Knights, Archmages and a Pit Fiend are needed for sure.  Good place to start I guess.

Is there a giant big or anything enough to count as eight, I forget.

There is a very small chance I have a figure with goggles... maybe. How about SciFi looking wrap-around Eyewear?

Reaper makes a number of giants, and dragons that i would count as multiple figures for purposes of this challenge.

I would count sci-fi goggles as "glasses".

I think the last one is supposed to include something that looks like this:

Image result for hawaiian shirt

Informational post has rough sizes-equivilancies, if you have a specific figure in mind for clarification, please post in that thread.

No brushes, air or otherwise, the entire figure must be fingerpainted ^_^ Primer? That's why there's brush-on, in this case, fingerpaint on. You can take advantage of thinned paint to flow as you want it, but application of the paint to the figure must be done using your fingers.
Goggles will count as glasses for purposes of this challenge.

And yeah, that or any other type of similar patternish. A google search of "aloha style shirts" will give you a plethora of images.

The challenge is 30 minis in 30 days (not necessarily 1 mini each day.) I've been prepping a few figures each week since August, and this year's theme is Science Fiction:

      Team Terminator:

      XairBot (Small) 49012
      XairBot (Medium) 49013
      CyberReavers I (2) 50354
      CyberReavers II (2) 50355
      CyberReaver 845
      Enforcer 847

      Team Survivor:

      HESCO barriers (2)
      Starship Generator 80053
      Tess, Adventuring Heroine 49020
      Slade, Cyborg Hero 49018
      Nova Corp:Female 80013
      Nova Corp:Soldier 80012

      Terrain:

      Gothic Tank Traps/objective markers (2)
      3d printed scatter terrain
      Crates (Large and Small)(2) 77248
      Jersey Barriers (2)

      More Stuff:

      IMEF: Reggie Van Zandt 80017
      Viceroy Enforcers (3) 30029
      Starship Generator 80053 #2

      Obligatory Fantasy:

      Cats&Catacombs
      Dreadmere wight 44022
      Benedict Baker
      dark elf w/bow 1128
      Liriel Silverlocks 2458
      DGS games female

Not shown: Blood Nebula Mercenary 49017, Power Generator 72611 (2)-- still in blister packs.

That gets me to 30-ish, depending on whether I count things like the barriers and crates as single pieces or not.  Still working on getting the last few pieces washed and primed and identified.

I am stunned at my recently arrived Sophie's Revenge, and so excited to get it to the painting table (I will have to significantly reconfigure my painting space to ensure I have enough room...  As well as buy LOTS of new brown paint, ha!)  It is a thing of beauty, even without a lick of paint on it.

One of the first things I noticed was how the magnetized masts SNAP to the deck, hard.  That's what you want, so they'll stay firmly in place.  But when you remove 'em, they'll likely scratch the heck out of the painted deck.  So I plan to cut disks of black felt to glue to the underside/ magnet-side of the masts, so that when they stick, they're more gentle.  Thin felt should not affect how they stick, but it should make a big difference on the ship's wear and tear.

Are you planning on painting yours?  What strategies are you going to adopt to make it as beautiful as you can, while still keeping it sturdy as a plaything for your RPGs, wargames, or maybe even little kids (don't judge!  mine are gonna be all over this thing!)

StackaRack is a customisable plastic rack for miniature paints, designed to hold pots or bottles from any of the major manufacturers.

Paint collections have a way of growing organically, and most of the current paint rack solutions out there are fixed to specific configurations, and made for a specific type of paint pot. If you're like me, and collect multiple brands of paint, that can make organising them a little frustrating, and so we thought we would try to fix that.

StackaRack was designed to hold any of the major miniature paint ranges - from the dropper bottles used by Vallejo and Army Painter, to the tall pots from the likes of Privateer and Reaper (and GW's old range), and the current stubby Citadel pots. The injection moulded plastic parts will fit together with plastic clips, allowing you to build it how you like, and disassemble and reconfigure it as needed.

Check out the project live on Kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/spiralarmstudios/stackarack?ref=acpi8t

I should have started this at the beginning of the year but a few months late is better than never. I've been working on getting stuff together for Q2 and some things for the rest of the year. For the quarterly stuff I'm going to continue to work on Grimtalon...that I don't think I have a WIP thread for and my large group has settled on doing a townsfolk theme and I'm doing the Fishwife from Dreadmere in Bones 4 KS. I have a diorama in the works but I really don't know if I'm going to finish it this quarter.

      My list for April:

      Theme: (Vampire):
      Jahenna, Female Vampire (77669)
      Limited Palette:
      Purple, Orange, Pink
Styx Purple, Fire Orange, Runic Glow
      Giant Frog (44024)
      Player Character:
Lysette, Elven Mage (Bones USA (30001))
      Monster:
      Gulper (44038)
      Duo:
      Cyclops (77705)
      Trio:
      Merowyn Lightstar (77675)
      New Release:
Darius the Blue (Bones USA (30002))
      Freebie:
      D’Tenian, d10 (77647)

Will get some photos up soon.

I'd never felt I had an artistic bone in my body until I started painting minis. Well, now, I decided I'm going to try my hand at 2D art.

I am following along Bob Ross videos on YouTube. I will note, and this is probably very important, that I am using acrylic paint and not oils. I did not want to spend oil paint prices since this is a new thing for me.

These are the two I've done:

Day 1: I learned a lot, I needed to do something with my paint to extend the drying time. This would have helped with the blending. Overall, happy with it excepting the house.

2: I used some slow dry medium mixed into the paint today. Not sure if it was not mixed well enough or I didn't use enough but it only gave me like 5 minutes or less of extra working time. If anyone has any suggestions for how to use slow dry medium, please, let me know. I'm using heavy bodied acrylic tube paints.

I followed along until the end and I decided to add some darker blue and green. I think that helped a lot.

Another note, need to find sturdier paper. While this is holding up it likes to curl slightly while drying. The second one is taped to the desk on the back to try to minimize that problem. I am currently using a mixed media paper.
