Skies of Sordane: 3d printable airships

That first pic looks promising, but it also makes me think that there's a chance GW will try to stop this if the ships look to similar to their AOS Dwarf Airships.

I don't think the design is close enough to the Karakardon[sp?] Craft for that to be a worry. I think they are OK there.

That said, I am unimpressed by some of the features in this design:

6d6fbded17b5eac3f106c5112b6edff8_original.jpg

  • Railings...problem: they look way too fragile and delicate for a gaming model; I would expect difficulty printing them
  • Catwalks...problem: they look realistically narrow like they are 3 foot wide, figure bases need 5 foot wide catwalks to fit a 25mm base
  • Bowsprit...problem: it is too small to function as a ram; too short to serve as a place to attach cables or sails; it looks non-functional
  • Wrap Around Bow Viewport...problem: it looks like a feature from a space shuttle, completely unlike anything a Victorian Engineer would design
  • Bow Viewport...problem: I can see the solid filled innards of this sculpt, instead of the details I should be able to see through such a large opening
  • Ballista...problems: it is tiny weaponry compared to such a big air vehicle, the chair pedestal mount does not look like it can swivel, gunner is badly and needlessly exposed
  • Ballista...problem: why have a medieval ballista when a 1 pounder Hotchkiss gun would be so much more effective? Or better yet a 3 pounder***
  • Crane...problem: is it remotely controlled? there is no place for crane operators to stand but it looks like it would need operators to control it
  • Cargo Doors...problem: why are the cargo doors recessed and tilted inward? That just reduces internal volume and cargo space for no purpose

All of my design concerns could be addressed by going back into the 3D model and adjusting things...   $0.02

Interesting.....I'll keep an eye on this and see it ends up looking like.  I don't think I have an airships yet.  And Canadian, which I always like supporting.

it's... interesting... to me that they've chosen that airship as the 'cover model' for the teaser...  to me it's the least interesting one.....

The Geshtar Class HQ Airship looks incredibly fantasy airship to me.  No aerodynamics at all, over the top ornamentation, basically a floating fortress.  One wonders how the bow chasers are loaded though......

I like the look of that Arodan Ship.

Maybe one day if I decide to buy a printer.

Considering the size of the ships, you'll need two printers. Filament for the large parts and resin for details.

They have a pledge level for just the three smaller ships, which will have a set of files split specifically for resin printers.  They would still take a good chunk of time to print, but they are printable on a resin printer.
And they say all of the figs will print on an FDM printer. But I'll be waiting to print them (and all the other figs I have already) until I get a resin printer.  I don't have the patience to tune my Ender 3 to that level.  Plus printing great huge stuff is more fun anyway ::D:

I am confused about the difference between the $55 and the $65 pledges. Is it $10 more for the same models but cut into bigger prints? Is this what I want for my Ender 3?

You mean the Fleet Early Bird vs the Armada Early Bird?

Fleet doesn't include the 2 really big ships, Armada does.

All 5 ships should be printable all the Ender 3, so if you want the Roshan and Geshtar, you want the Armada.
They consider the Ender 3 (and comparable sized printers) as medium printers.

From what they said in the comments you will get all of the different sliced versions of the files for every ship you pledge for.

So if you want shorter runs on the Ender 3 (but more of them) it might make more sense to use the files sliced for the small resin printers.

I find I'm not as excited about this as I was at first. It all looks too fantasy for me, not enough steampunk.  Far too D&D oriented, which I know is what everyone but my group is playing these days.

I realize that 3d printers print in chunks according to bed size, but the seam placement on the bow pieces of the Gleaming Shard is awful.  Right across the wings? Come on!  Would have been nice to shape it so it fit over the bow, with nested pieces.

      Story
Welcome to our second Kickstarter campaign!
We are 3DBreed Miniatures and after our first successful kickstarter campaign '1775 Join or Die' , we are happy to present 'Sky Shards: The Arrival', a collection of 6mm scale mecha models and terrain objects, created to be printed at home in resin printers such Anycubic Photon or Elegoo Mars, or in FDM printers such as Ender 3 or Prusa.
** We remind you that this Kickstarter is for digital files (STLs) to make all these items on your own 3D printer, such as Anycubic Photon or Ender 3. These are not physical models **
The models have been designed in pieces to allow an easy printing and removal process of the supports. They are ideal to be adapted to any RPG or Wargame.
The pledge consists of 4 different factions with their unique style. Each faction has 2 Heavy mechs (40-70mm high), 5 Medium Mechs (30-40mm high) and 5 Light Mechs (20-30mm high). Besides, a basic terrain objects' pack is included in the pledge, along with 6mm scale infantry units, an APC vehicle, a tank and a generic excavator to extract the valuable 'Sky Shards'.
In 3DBreed Miniatures we firmly believe that the best way to show the confidence in our work is to give you the opportunity to download the THOR'S HAMMER squadron's free 3D printing files to make a printing test. They will give you a good idea of a finished miniature in your hand.
      DOWNLOAD THOR'S HAMMER SQUADRON
'Sky Shards: The arrival' has just a pledge of 40€ and with it, you'll get all the miniatures and terrain objects of the basic set and all the stretch goals' aditional content that we manage to unlock:

My name is Bruno and I recently decided to use my (few) graphic skills to design my own waterslide transfers, as I could not manage to get the details on my miniatures right. Especially the parchment, scrolls and purity seals never quite looked as good as I wanted. After sharing some of my work on Reddit and Instagram, I discovered many more miniature hobbyist had this same issue, which lead me to this kickstarter! Besides sharing my own designs, these transfers will be screen printed by industry leading professionals to the highest quality possible.    The first sheet The finished product will be an A5 (210x148 mm) transfer sheet printed in 3 colors: White, Black and Red. The sheet will have hundreds of different designs to give you the most flexibility possible when personalising your mini's. I will regularly add new designs to the sheet, taking into account the backers feedback, until the sheet is full.                      Now while this seems geared to Warhammer 40K at first glance there is going to be a lot that's of more general interest, how many minis have you got with open books, parchments etc that just don't look great when you try and do it yourself?

seems well worth a go, and not bad price wise (if you've ever tried to make your own waterslide stuff)

Another Kickstarter from Crooked Dice. This expands their well established "TV7" line with new rules, new figures and the chance to buy old ones at a discount.

I've backed several of their projects and always had good, friendly service with excellent figures, so I shall be having at least a few of these.

Something to keep me happy for the next few, isolated weeks!
