Question Feb. 27th.

Do you have painting recipes?

No.

I wish I had some for statuary, various metals, timber, and different kinds of stone, e.g. marble, granite, sandstone, Obsidian, jade, chalk....

NOTE: I mean PAINT Recipes,...

Luckily for us all I am too abysmal in a kitchen to be offering up culinary procedures.  I did cook 3 eggs without ruining them about 4 hours ago though.

Sadly I have nothing but fallible memory to go on.

Sure, if you mean as a general guideline in the way that I tend to use cooking recipes. But no, if you mean in the strict way you gotta follow a baking recipe.

I have a couple.  I made my own washes and these were documented and my legion of the damned troops have their recipe written down, along with paint splotches.  I was meant to do this with everything I did, but I have been bad at maintaining it.  I bought a small hard-covered sketching book that has pretty heavy stock paper in it just for this purpose and it doesn't get used nearly as much as it should.  I has been helpful when I paint another few marines though every few years...

I have taken notes of @knarthex's recipe for Stonework.

I also have a rudimentary recipe for the  different fleshtones and bones/skeletons.

I tend to wing it, but I have been known to try and keep notes in my WIP threads of my mixes, but I don't really aim for any particular recipes, just whatever feels good.

I tend to paint things in similar ways using a pattern of certain colors. As my memory fails the combinations change creating new looks to the stuff. What was the question again?

Mine are mostly just using particular triads, perhaps with a wash or an extra colour or two added.

I can never remember what I used before, so I try (and often fail) to record them in my WIPs if I want to be able to repeat them.

- Jelly’s Regurgitated Bones -

1) Mix a skull, bones and/or chopped skeleton warrior bits, assemble into a small pile depending on what you’re going for

2) Add one layer of Celestra Grey, spread evenly

3) Add one thin layer of Ushabti Bone, allow to dry and repeat

4) Add Seraphim Sepia wash to taste; use a lighter coat for a fresher bone effect

5) Apply a thin layer of Nurgle’s Rot technical in a downward motion, leaving a decent bit of bone towards the underside untouched, allow to dry and repeat

Serve on the side with your favorite troll, beast or chaos cult.

Boom! Puked-up bones!

I keep records of everything I paint and how I paint it in my art journal, so I can always go back and recreate it if needed.  Looks a lot like this:

Not really.

If you look at my Work in Progress threads I do appear to use the same colours to paint certain things, but that's just me being lazy.

the best I have is the wash I put over shiny metals. 2 drops gloss medium, 1 drop wash medium, 1 drop water, 1/2 drop nightmare black. does a really good job of sinking into the lines without shading the highs too much. but you can't apply it too thickly or it does pool.

I don't paint batches of minis, army painting or otherwise, so I don't really have a need to exactly match a color. I do keep a paint journal and record what colors I used or mixed on the mini.

As for recipes I don't really have any. I have some rules of thumb, like starting my brown leather mostly with a burnt umber base.

When I was painting minis, I kept records of what I used. At first I dabbled with recipes, but I feel they're a crutch. Limiting, and you'll always be looking for another recipe and never learn the why behind the selections. Teach a man to fish etc.

But for getting up to speed, they're pretty useful. My color work is still pretty lacking compared to when I copy other people's colors, but that's part of the skill progression.

Found an old example of my paint notes:

Fair skin tones + Flesh wash

Metallic armours + Steel wash

Rocks and stones + Stone wash

Uhm... so I use washes when applicable. Otherwise, I just look it up online only to realize I don't own the same colours used.
