Holly Monster Kid Hero Collab

Recommended Posts

I had the opportunity to meet and spend a little time with the lovely and talented Holly Monster while we were at the Reaper KS Countdown Party! (Holly's Twitch Channel) We chit chatted about the kid adventurers I did for the KS and Holly introduced me to her little OC/Twitch Channel mascot "Monster" who is a little turquoise tiefling. I absolutely loved her design, I thought it was SO cute, and we decided then when schedules opened up we would get together and do a little collab piece together for fun!
I'll be working on this project a little here and there between other projects and sculpts I'm doing for work. Holly is going to Malaysia tomorrow so she'll be out of town for a while but i'm gonna share sort of what we talked about and how we approached the design etc.

If you're unfamiliar, This is Monster:

Molly was kind enough to send me a PDF that had the write up and information about her, she's just started using her as a D&D character recently, which included not only a physical description but also her whole backstory and choice of weapons/armor etc. and all the other art she's had commissioned of her from other artists.
She's 12, and despite her heritage, has yet to be corrupted by evil forces. She was raised by a guild which doubled as a shrine to the lunar goddess Selune. Although the guild accepted her completely, she grew accustomed to the side glances and whispers about her from outsiders and instead of being offended she embraced the nickname she had heard so many call her before, Monster.

So we started discussing major design decisions, hoping to get the big stuff nailed down before she left for her trip. She sent me this image for armor inspiration:

and according to her character write up, Monster fights with a rapier and shield. With all that in mind I set to work sketching.
I already knew the body shape/type I was going to use because of our conversations about the kid heroes before so I started with that. Redrew her head/hair in more of my own style, and then started exploring the costuming a bit more.  Immediately I was drawn to this breastplate shape on the chest in the inspiration image. It reminded me of the holly leaf swoop and point that I drew for the holly leaves in her hair. I decided that would be the shape language/ pattern that I wanted to repeat throughout the piece.

With the sword and shield there wasn't anything previously established in the art or the backstory for her so I had a little more room to add my own input to those design elements. I really liked the imagery for the lunar goddess Selune from the PDF
Selune.JPG.70940868815059309324544d45b7388d.JPG I really loved this circle/star pattern and I thought it would make a perfect fit for the shield.

The sword was supposed to be a rapier which gets a little tricky because of the spacing typically in the hand guard and the narrowness of the blade for production. So we decided to make a slightly more thick but tapered style blade and make the hand guard into a full holly leaf shape to repeat the design theme and not create a bunch of holes and things that might cause problems down the road.
So here's the sketch we came up with:

We talked about what kind of animal friend she would have. It was either going to be a barn owl or an arctic fox and I think the fox just seemed like a good fit. I might end up doing some other sketches/studies before sculpting up the fox but this gave us a general direction and I set to work!

This is going to look great!

Yeah rapiers are always a pain. I've made a few, and by their very nature they need to be thin with elaborate basket hilts and guards....which don't really work for printing and production. I have another rapier wielding character in mind to sculpt so I will be watching this thread to see if there are any ideas that I can steal....er….."borrow" for making the sword!

Today was my day "off" but I spent a few hours blocking some major elements for this piece.

The base anatomy I was able to mostly reuse a ZSphere rig I built previously for Yuka (the inuit kid hero) because they shared a similar body type. I made the waist a little smaller, the torso a tad bit longer, and a few other very minor adjustments and this rig was ready to be posed.

Then I did a little bit of anatomy cleanup and started on the head. I had some reference images already that Holly provided. Plus I had redrawn this character in my style already so this was a pretty quick process. I had a really good idea of what I wanted from the get go and it came together pretty quickly.

Put those elements together and added some basic blocking in shapes to get a feel for how everything is flowing together in the composition and so far so good I think!

I’m so excited that this is happening. I never thought my stream mascot turned D&D character would end up becoming a real mini. I can’t wait to see her completed, and I absolutely love the care and thought you are putting into this. ♥️♥️♥️

This is really fantastic! I'm looking forward to seeing this character completed, love the work so far.

I really love the Holly-leaf hilt for the rapier! It's very in keeping with historical rapiers, in the sense that once swords became a little more associated with the upper classes there are many examples of custom-built swords that referenced their owners' arms or deeds in their construction. And the way you've sculpted the leaf makes it very similar to a clamshell guard with a very broad knucklebow, so it's not far off from a real thing!

If you're ever doing another rapier, keep in mind that many didn't have elaborate cages: a stiff thrusting blade, a knucklebow, a pair of quillons (the "crossguard"), and a protective ring or cup above the front quillon (so a forefinger can wrap around the unsharpened base of the blade above the crossguard) is really what makes the sword a rapier. The fancy cage is just one kind of rapier hilt. I always want to see more cup hilts on minis, TBH. Cups were one of the most common types of hilt, and the Spanish continued using them for a hundred years after the rest of Europe moved on to the smallsword.

Anyway, I love this "Monster." Can't wait to see you add the horns to that face!

Question:

The shield, is it definititively going to be round? because Selune is a Moon Goddess and moons are round?

Selune.JPG

When I first saw that ^ I pictured a more involved shape for the shield. But I know almost nothing about Forgotten Realms.

But I stumbled onto this:

....which could be fan fic art. IDK.

So It doesn't necessarily HAVE to be round. Even using the star/circle shape we could work that into a more elongated diamond shaped shield if we wanted to. I try to consider what will be easiest for printing/casting purposes and the round was an obvious choice. Definitely worth considering alternative solutions though. I'll play around with the shape of it when we get to that part and see what will work best!

This is what popped into my head, after thinking "how does that fit onto a shield / what shield does that fit?"

Little more work on Monster today. Defining the hair, adding the little holly berries and leaves, and the rough version of the horns. Blocking some more parts of the costuming throughout. I don't get to devote entire days at a time on this project so you'll see this one come together a little slower than some of my other threads. This is a couple hours of work.
