In a far obscure past I tried to play the guitar and organ. I didn't get far and gave up eventually. My favorite instrument would be the electric guitar. 6
Zink
2 hours ago, ManvsMini said: Question for March 31st: What is your favorite instrument to listen to (or to play, if your talent allows it)? Probably guitar or piano but I like a lot of things. Never really tried to play anything so no talent there. 6
ttuckerman
Dulcimer, I have even built one. I play badly, but I play. 7
Corsair
I guess acoustic guitar is my favorite, especially Spanish style. No musical ability within me at all, but Lady C not only has a beautiful Alto voice she also plays piano. And thank you for a month of great questions. 8

Every instrument has its own sound, and in the hands of a skilled musician makes the most beautiful music. I'd lean to this a bit, I just love hearing someone who has mastered an instrument play a piece that is perfectly written for it. It also changes as my tastes change, but the single constant has been the solo cello, the composer is (of course, he's also my very favorite) Bach, the musician is Yo-Yo Ma. His 2-disc set of the full Bach suite for cello is the basic soundtrack of my life. That said, a solo violin is also very close behind. My favorite violinist is Anne Akiko Meyers, I was lucky enough to get seats directly in front of her when she played with one of our area symphonies. She's both technically skilled and extremely emotive (we were close enough to clearly hear her grunting and stamping while she played). I also dig Hilary Hahn, who I got turned on to when I was enraptured by the soundtrack to the movie The Village, her violin is one of the stars of the movie imo. But really, most orchestral instruments are amazing and hypnotic when my initial litmus is applied. Moments when an oboe will plaintively emerge from the fog of a quiet section is always a great listen. Likewise, it's always nice to see a bassoon or two on the stage when I go to the symphony (or, gasp, a contrabassooooon!). And then there's the corrupted, the classical instruments playing devil's music. I've always liked the clarinet's tone, but when I first heard Benny Goodman rip off a solo, man...that's the stuff. Or good ol' Charlie Daniels sawing his fiddle deep in an instrumental jam. I've played bass and guitar at a professional level, and even thought I was fairly good a few times in my life. When I was in music school, I happened to be my band's bassist and focused on that in performance classes, and I was consistently the student chosen to back up the instructor or play examples. That's probably my favorite notch in the music belt, oddly. The school was in Los Angeles and stacked with talented players. I've also been a struggling and failed drummer most of my life. I love 'em but I lack limb independence to be much good. I have sat in with a few bands and can fake it well enough to get by (playing a nasty groove like Stubblefield or someone funky helps). You know you'll usually get long music answer from me by now, yeah? edited to add: Oh, my current life soundtrack is another of my favorite solo instrument double albums: Segovia! I disagree with a few of his interpretations (preferring his master, Francisco Tarrega), but he's still a master that I've listened to for untold thousands of hours. 8
redambrosia
Oh, I know. The Hurdy Gurdy. Now that’s a fantastic instrument. Patty Gurdy plays it very well. 7

Though not musically talented myself, I'm a sucker for some good saxophone music. Doesn't matter if it's swing/big band, smooth jazz, Bruce Springsteen, or some funky EDM group that's just sax and laptop. Love that sound. A few months ago I went and saw Moon Hooch which is just a drum kit, a laptop, a tenor sax, and a baritone sax. They were over the top fun and I danced more than I have in a long time. Also, I've never heard anything as ear drum shattering as a bari sax amplified and played through a traffic cone. I swear I had a minor concussion after that show it was so loud! Thanks for the month of questions. 5 1

What are you currently playing? Which game(s) have you sunk countless hours into? I haven't played that many video game RPGs lately, but I used to spend a hefty chunk of my time playing Japanese RPGs. Goodness knows how many hours I sunk into those games, but at least I was having fun and not hurting anyone. I've preordered the remake of a certain classic JRPG featuring a spikey haired hero with a giant sword, so I'll hopefully be back in the habit soon. It's an odd one, but I love listening to violin played alongside heavy guitar music. I have a negative score in Performance though. Both sides of my family are very musical and they tried for years to try and get me to play something, anything, even vaguely competently. Finally dug my heals in at age 15 and refused to go to anymore lessons. 7
