Or are backers backing the project because it's Privateer Press and they like the sculpts?

5 years ago I would have said yes. Most of the people I know who used to be Team Privateer 110% left them cold after MK:III came out.

Near as I can tell their fanbase is a ghost of what it once was.  at least around here. Everyone seems to have moved on to Corvus Belli or forgiven GW

I got mine last week, and I dry-fit a few of the minis. I just don't know if I'll ever get the chance to play the game.

They actually just launched another.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/privateerpress/warcaster-collision-course   I just can't justify getting it to myself. PP is a shadow of itself, and the game isn't going to hit retail. in my area (I asked around)

Privateer press used to be the second biggest gorilla in mini gaming, yet it took them so little time to be reduced to their current state.

Making some of their models webstore-only; having a really rough rollout on 3rd ed with not enough copies of the product; pissing off their distributors in general; bloating a "standard" army from maybe 10-15  models when it first came out to 43 in my opponents force when I last played; and every unit/model having a ton of special rules, making system mastery a high bar. All of this coming to a head just as 40k went into the excellent 8th edition.

Then their RPG had to go up against D&D 5th ed, where it did about as well.
