Wikkedj
Howdy all, I've painted a lot of bones minis and am no stranger to boiling and dunking in ice water to straighten warped minis. However, I've never had one go back to warped. I boiled and dunked my bones bone devil and gave it a base coat this weekend. When I went downstairs yesterday it was back to a pretty badly warped pose. Now, I can pry it off the base and strip him, boil again etc but it's going to damage the base a bit and in a perfect world I could avoid having to repair that. Have any of you boiled a bones mini with paint on it?
DocPiske
Yes you can boil painted Bones. I would dunk the mini in already boiling water and remove it quickly. The bone devil has very thin parts and should reach the deformation temperature quickly. I think I may have had to pin my bone devils, though. They bend under thier own weight. Wikkedj
Thanks for the info! I never thought of pinning. I could snip some bras rod and put it under the pelvis connecting to the base - paint it to match the base and it would be barely noticeable. onthebus36
I had a similar problem with the Griffin from Kickstarter 4. I had to reinforce the leg with pins to get it hold the weight of the body and big wings.
Grumpy Cave Bear
Pinning for support is pretty easy with Bones. I’ve done it with brass dressmaker pins. I heated up the mini in boiling water until it was soft, pushed the pin into the leg (from under the integral base), then snipped the head off. I even boiled a Bones shadow dragon, straightened its leg at the knee, pushed the pin in up to the thigh, then bent the leg back to its correct position. Pushing the pins in gets more difficult the further in they go. I’ve thought about heating the pin in a candle flame before trying, but haven’t tried, for fear of ruining the mini. EDIT: By “head”, I mean cut off the head of the pin, not the head of the mini! I don’t want any blame for misread instructions! Doug Sundseth
Recommend that rather than using ice water to cool the mini you allow the mini to cool slowly. If you cool it quickly, just like if you cool metal or glass quickly, you can get internal stress build-up. By cooling slowly (annealing), you allow the stresses to relax, which can reduce the chance of reverting to the pre-boiled position.
