Darksword Elmore Dragon #5: Bronze dragon

And this guy is metal, right? Very cool!

Thanks!  Yes, he's a metal dragon.  the heaviest part of the dragon though is the wings.  They weigh about half again as much as the rest of the dragon does.  for a lark, before I assembled them (which is a significant challenge BTW, each wing consists of two pieces and they have to be bent in exactly the same way or they wont line up) I left them flat to see what his wingspan was and even though they were still slightly furled he had a 12 inch span from tip to tip.

Wow, he's gorgeous!

I've seen the picture, but I never realized that there was a mini based on it. I love the colour shift effect!

Wow, great work!  I love the effect.  Did you go straight over a black basecoat?  Is that Liquitex or Golden?  I assume it's interference paint, and it looks like what I have (a couple varieties of).  Haven't done much with it except the carapace of one of the Bones bugs.

these are the Vallejo colorshift  paints,  77-007 pearl violet on the upper wing and 77.015 gold yellow/burnt orange on the undersides.  they are painted on brown primer.  these paints act really differently depending on what the substrate is but they are fun to play with.  They are much easier to work with than the interference pigments i have from Jaquard.

he is a pretty one!  This is an older mini but still one of the crispest out there.  still has some fit problems but overall its one of the better fits for a metal mini out there.  And as i said, he completes the set of 5 Elmore dragons from Darksword.  Maybe i will get a chance to post a pic of all 5 of them together!

Wonderful dragon - would love to see all five of yours together!

This one has so much character and I really like how you brought that out in the face.

Maybe this week.  These are almost all big and heavy so they can be a little difficult to extract from the shelves but I'll manage

Thanks.  it was a nice feeling to complete the set though that gold dragon took forever when I did him.  (he was the first) On to other things since I don't have to worry about keeping up with my DND group until we meet in person again I can paint whatever I feel like

Maybe someday I will finish repainting my Grenadier dragon lords circle.  I have my highschool original in a box but it would be interesting to put them side by side.  that was long ago and far away.

Amazed that the arms glued on strong and perfectly with no help from putty. That has to be a first ever for me.

At this point I really don't need an excuse to paint another dragon but I like to have an evil spell caster for each campaign I run,  you know, just in case.  So Alendrax, a young adult red dragon mage came to be.  he specializes in enchantment and illusion (lets face it, evocation is sort of overkill for a dragon) and likes to play with his food commanding them to hand over all their possessions, kill or torture those they care for and bring him goodies before eating them when he tires of the game.  He also entraps scribes to enchant his spells directly on his wings rather than risking having his prized spells stolen from him.

Having been ousted from his previous home by a bigger silver dragon for being a "deranged sociopath" he escaped with only his wings and his life.  Now he has settled near our hero's stomping grounds to wreak havoc and chaos as he rebuilds his power to displace  Jerseranoth (Joe, the barkeep at the Red Dragon Inn in Port Shaw) and maybe find some spells that will work against that usurper!

Anyway Alendrax is one of the first Elmore dragons I ever picked up but I just never got around to painting him.  he was actually a pretty fun paint with just enough detail to let me have some fun but not so much that I felt the need to spend agonizing amounts of effort on every scale.  I hope you enjoy him!

I'm painting this up for the BBEG this weekend. Last night I tried the layering technique for black by using multiple thin layers of complementary colors. Someone posted the artist and demo on the Reaper fan page a couple of weeks back when someone asked about painting black. If anyone knows the artist or link, please let me know since I can't find it. I highly recommend it. While these pics don't show the various tones of colors, it looks like rich black with some depth vs going flat like some black paints do. I love the effect. However, I will say it doesn't work as well on something more curvy. I was also trying it on another mini for her top and she'd very curvaceous. It looked a little weird so I just repainted it.

So that being said, I'd love some thoughts on what to do about the collar piece and gloves he has. Should I do the same black treatment or go with a different color? I think I'm going to do his pants in a gray so the focus is more on his armor. Thanks!

Here are a few random Darksword minis I've painted over the last few months. I tried to stick to an earthy color palette for most of them.

Male Blind Warrior, SKU: DSM7417, and Young Hedge Knight - Dual Wield, SKU: DSM5026

Male Range with Wineskin, SKU: DSM7403

Male Elven Ranger with Bow, SKU: DSM7451. This one is a gift for my brother. He wanted an "Aragorn-esque" ranger mini.

Male Warrior with Battle Axe, SKU: DSM7427, and Female Elven Archer, SKU: DSM1196
