Ancient Battlefleet Gothic Empire ships

Due to a certain person working up my interest in Battlefleet gothic, (okay, really all you have to do is wave a new ship under my nose, its not really a challenge) I went into my archives to see what I could paint to scratch the itch.  So out of the archives I dug these ancients out of hiding to go from prime to painted.  I am not really sure of their vintage but they are old enough to be something I bought when I was 15 and they are actual lead GW minis, which I thought didn't actually exist!  Anyway, I thought others would enjoy them.  They are the same color scheme as my favorite imperium fleet (I might have a few...) and I was trying for that sharp bright color scheme.  I think I succeeded but to each his own.  I think these are a pair of old crusiers and a battleship but if anyone wants to try their google fu and identify them, have at!

I sort of imagine them to be remnant ships from before the days of Iron men, hundreds of millenia old and veterans of thousands of battles and yet still they prowl the warpways, vigilant and still untainted by the spread of chaos.  there is just something about the bluntness of these and the hulking weight that just says power out of another age...

I don't think those are Battlefleet Gothic, I'm pretty sure those are from the earlier GW spaceship game.

Whose name eludes me as I've never seen the game, just some of the minis.

Looks right.  those are the right ships at least.  That had to be a pretty heavy box.  Never saw GW stuff in lead before and you can easily write with these.  they are exceptionally soft and heavy.  Wouldnt mind finding some of the space fleet eldar though, they looked pretty cool.

Space Fleet is the older game, only released in issues of White Dwarf. It did not last long, as it evolved it BFG 'quickly'.

Space Fleet definitely had a commercial release, along with Kerrunch! (Blood Bowl), Mighty Warriors (Warhammer Quest), and Ultra Marines (Tyranid Attack).  They were made as introductory games to get people interested in the "big" games and game universes.  There was a wonky box-top grid to determine hits/misses and they usually reused models from older games or the "big" game that they were intended to support.

Spacefleet can be found on the Bay of Evil, usually at high prices since it's "collectible" as is BFG itself nowadays.

 

Have you heard of the UK company Kallistra?

I actually have some of their miniatures.  We have used them for merchants in Star Fleet Battles as a convoy.  my greatest objection to them is they are almost aerodynamically flat which looks funny on something that is supposed to be the size of a moderate city.  they are pretty nice looking otherwise though.  We use the ore merchants and the Kalon as our merchant fleets. 

 

Everything is expensive when it comes to BFG.  its annoying and I wish that Games Workshop would allow their retired pieces to be cast and sold for those of us who want the older toys.  I will say that the BFG community has don't a lot of cool things based on the existing ships without infringing on their copyrights.

Thank you.  I did see some base game boxes and the cost varies wildly from inexpensive to 'wow!' so that is explained by the white dwarf subscriptions.

the things that happen while I was busy trying to make a living.  I lived in the land of the lost where gaming was looked at as the devils tools -- gaming being either sporting or gambling or a combination of the two.  my experience with Games workshop started in 86 but stopped in 90 and I didn't really see them again until after 2008.  Pretty big gap.

Thanks a lot!  I really do like how brightly the white and yellow popped.  It makes them stand out against their more sophisticated brethren

oh, these bring back memories!

 

Imperial ships, from left to right: the Dominator Battleship, the Emperor Capital Ship and the Tyrant Battleship. The line was called Space Fleet and the year 1991 (well, maybe 1992.)

 

The Dominator had a very powerful attack directly in front of it, and that could affect adjacent squares as well. It was pretty useless in all other directions though, so it became a game of swivel on the spot when the eldar wraithships danced around it.

Thanks for the names!  I will add them to the underside of the bases so I know what they are!

 

It's nice to know that the dance of the eldar hasn't changed much.  there is always much frustration when someone plays Eldar (and they are my personal favorite)  the quote "will you just stand still and let me hit you" is heard quite often...  The move-shoot-move of the eldar ships means you have to guess where they are going.  Misjudge and your fighters and torpedoes just went their full movement in the wrong direction!
