live Scale 75 - Instant Color

I’d love to pick up a bunch of these for my speed painting if figs for dnd, but I’m sorry, I’m not doing THAT shipping.

I don't need the box, the brushes, the palette, the extra shipping cost - so the early bird is wasted on me. I'd probably have done an early bird for the whole line-up if it didn't waste a bunch of money.

 

Instead I'll pick up a box or two to try it out.

 

A side note is that if you pick up their "normal" sets of paint, it's around a 22% discount on the standard boxes, and a 17% discount on the inks/specialty paints. So if you lump those in and don't get killed on shipping, could be worth it. 

 

I'm going to stop being excited for Scale75 kickstarters though. There's never a "great" value. It's always meh.

Also already burned all the SG, and probably they will jump to next one like the last KS, ignoring 200k of improvement in SG.

No starter set of colors, only early bid on the big one, pathetic SG, retailer prices (they will sell the colors at the same price, like the last KS).

I'm pretty happy with those. I've been playing around with some contrast paints, but the colors I really wanted had limited availability in my area (and GW prices are a bit much for me). 

Having a lot of Bones and Wizkids plastics laying around unpainted, the time saving aspect definetly appeals to me. I've started working with an airbrush and zenithal priming, but the idea of just smashing paints onto kobolds, goblins, animals and the likes still sounds like it would be quicker and easier. Doesn't mean I'd only paint with those colors and throw the others out into the plastic bin ofc. 

I have some "normal" Scale 75 paints and their metalics and I love those.

 

The pledge selections and color sets seem a bit weird though. There is a lot of reds in the range and 4 almost identical colors in that health pot set. And yes, not everyone will want all those knick knacks in the spellcaster pledge.

The sets definitely seemed like they are designed to make you buy all of them to have any sort of color variety, hopefully they aren't the only option at retail. The October delivery means if they are late at all there is a risk of frozen paints anywhere in the north.

Adding every single paint set as an Add On comes to 150 Euros, in case someone doesn't want the box and accessoires. It's quite a bit cheaper than the all in option. If shipping is done by weight, skipping the box will most likely also lower that a bit.

Does anybody know what the big difference between these new colors and their Inktensity Inks (or other inks) is?

The 'Summons' set looks... maybe useful? How well would these work if you used them as a base coat and then went over them with 'normal' paint?

 

I do like their other paints, but I think I might wait for these to hit their USA webstore post-Kickstarter.

They're intended to be paint and ink/wash in one, so you can skip layering.  One and done. No point putting these down if you're going to paint over them.  If anything, you'd want to do it the other way, put them over a layer of paint to get an inked effect.  But if you're going to that effort, multiple layers, you're probably better off getting a couple bottles of wash to use over paint you already have.

I don't know about these here (that's why I'm asking above where the difference to the Scale Inks is - or the GSW Inks) ... but the GSW Inks will not cover another color. If you watch the video on the project page where they are painting a troll ... there is a bit of light brown paint on the troll's thumb and the green instant color cannot cover it. That's one of the problems I have when using the GSW inks ... you prime the miniature in white and when you paint - for example - the cloak with red ink and you get a bit of that red onto another area that you want to paint yellow, you have to touch up the primer first before the yellow will cover that spot.

That's why I'd really like to know what the difference between those Inks and the new instant colors is (if there is one). Guess I'll back and ask.

I suspected as much. Still, I might keep my eye's on them, a couple seem like they might be useful for things like fur and the like.

I've just been using colored primers followed by Army Painter wash, then conventional painting mostly for faces.

 

Miniature on left was painted as a red colored primer followed by AP red ink wash. Right was grey colored primer, purple wash, then conventional painting.

MIni's are from PEG's The Goon miniature series. PEG is currently running a Deadlands RPG KS.

 

EDIT: Maybe they should sell a starter set with different colors, and "army sets" for difference races? With so many shades / whatever of each color, they should make six or eight sets without overlap.

Looking at the videos, this paint looks more like brightly colored shade or glaze paint then the newer contrast paints.  The GW stuff has a visibly more viscous consistency

They look much thinner than contrast paints and the way it went on in their video reminds me more of how I use the Vallejo washes, so there is some interest for me on that front, but...  Useless boxes, crazy shipping prices and weirder colour sets mean I will wait for them to be available on this continent and individually.  They have enough sales over the course of the year that I should be able to sample some without paying full retail.
