IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING REAPERCON 2020

April 29, 2020

Today, the ReaperCon staff met to discuss the status of ReaperCon 2020. It is with great disappointment that we unanimously decided to cancel ReaperCon 2020 in light of the current global situation.

The safety of our guests, instructors, volunteers and staff is and will always be our primary concern.

We want to thank everyone for their support of ReaperCon2020. We will miss sharing our love of painting and gaming with all of you, who we have come to consider our extended family.

We will begin processing full refunds through Growtix beginning May 2020. If you have any questions regarding your refund, please contact [email protected]

BUT WAIT...NOW THE GOOD NEWS!

Rather than just wait until next year for the next ReaperCon, we’re going to hold our first virtual ReaperCon Live Online instead!

At this time, this virtual ReaperCon Live Online is being planned to be held this year on Labor Day Weekend, September 3-6 2020.

Will there be a Swag Bag?
YES!

Will there be a VIP Bag?
YES!

Will there be online classes?
YES!

Will I have to go anywhere to watch ReaperCon Live Online?
NO! It’s all online! Just stay at home on your phone, laptop, or computer!

Will I have to pay to watch?
NO! It’s all FREE! The only things you’ll have to pay for are
optional fun things, like class kits, Swag Bags, and VIP Bags.

Please stay tuned for more details as they evolve.

If you have any questions, please send them to [email protected]

And as always, thank you for your support!!!

Tough call, and I'm bummed to not be able to attend my first RC. But safety first. Looking forward to the online festivities!

Look at it this way:

You will still be able to attend your First ReaperCon, it's just 12 months farther down the road than your original plans were made for.  You now have an additional 12 months to plan and execute that diorama idea that has been buzzing around in your head, an extra 12 months to watch the Twitch Feeds and improve your technique so those entries you bring for judging will be even better than first hoped for, and you get to see what some of ReaperCon is like through the Online Edition that will be happening ~this~ year.

Sad to see--we'd been looking forward to getting back to Reapercon!--but this is almost certainly a smart move. As someone who picked up (parts of) a (much smaller) IRL convention and moved it online I know you want to start the process sooner rather than later!

Deciding this early should give everyone a much better chance to make "reaperconline" a success.

I am bit curious about the logistics of still offering swag bags and especially VIP swag bags. Putting those together has to take a lot of work as well as a lot of donations and help from companies other than Reaper, honestly just getting what we are getting in the past as attendees is pretty remarkable, but still a bit more manageable because it was mostly limited to people who physically showed up. How would this work if opened up to literally a whole world full of people that wouldn't have otherwise attended Reapercon?

Not that I am begrudging people from participating, not by any means, I am more interested in the logistics.

I don't know if it was a good decision, but I'm convinced it was the best decision based upon the information available.

Especially considering there was probably a Go/No Go date coming up that would have cost everyone money.

Sometimes it's better to call it early and regret it than it is to make the call too late, and really, really regret not doing so earlier.

I would rather instead of refunding automatically they give me the choice to decide if I want my money back or transferred over to buy the online swag items.

I totally agree with this. The cash has been spent.

I'm not sure if I'll watch or do anything with Virtual RCon. It's great we have this tech, but I don't watch the Live series & some reason I fell like it'll just be Reaper Live @ ReaperCon 2020. That being said, I think they made the right decision but eh I'm not a doctor or the president.

I was hoping the September date would have help with the decision but now it means I'll be missing RCon 2 years in a row. On the bright side I can stop pestering work for the time off (damn Labor Day holiday......) but then again I doubt I would have gotten it anyways (again, damn Labor Day holiday).

Covid-19 is here to stay and isn’t going anywhere; this whole effort is merely delaying the inevitable.

There's this thing epidemiologists refer to as "Herd Immunity", where a population over time develops enough individuals with enough antibodies from already having the virus in question so that it is more difficult for the virus to find a host to infect.  It is generally a number somewhere in the 70% range.

So far, this virus has shown a low mutation rate so most people who are getting infected are experiencing the same exact virus.

In the areas where comprehensive testing has been performed there is found to be a 20% to 25% test positive for the antibodies, which means there are a lot of people walking around who caught it, didn't know it, and got better on their own.  It also means that there are a lot of

people out there who got exposed, and didn't get infected.

So we are at least a third of the way to effective herd immunity and may be as much as half way.

By this time next year, this thing will be no more noteworthy than a severe case of the regular flu.

Reasonable question.

Here's, as Paul Harvey used to say "The rest of the story.":

Reaper makes up enough Swag Bags and VIP Swag Bags to cover the anticipated number of ReaperCon attendees.  Extras are released for Online Sale at the end of the Convention and they make extras until a specified cutoff date so people who can't attend or want an extra over and above what they ordered for the Con can purchase them.

For ReaperConLine they will do some variation on the previous model, so those who want should have no fear of getting left out, as long as they get their order in on a timely manner.

As I've already ordered tickets for ReaperCon I'll be using our refund money to purchase the ReaperConLine  versions just as soon as they are available.
