ReaperCon 2020 Cancellation Notice

Though the possibility has been with us for weeks, it's saddening that it is cancelled. A LOT of people were hoping for it to go on with so many months left.

But in a way, it may be a strange new opportunity for others with the ReaperCon Live Online. As it was, it was very unlikely that I would've been able to attend this year (currently job hunting, and probably could not have the time off to attend if I did find something by then). But if it's online, that's a completely different matter.

Now I do have a reason to buy the VIP package. And I'll be curious to see what will happen to the class offerings considering that the hands-on classes will not transition well.

Reasonable question.

Here's, as Paul Harvey used to say "The rest of the story.":

Reaper makes up enough Swag Bags and VIP Swag Bags to cover the anticipated number of ReaperCon attendees.  Extras are released for Online Sale at the end of the Convention and they make extras until a specified cutoff date so people who can't attend or want an extra over and above what they ordered for the Con can purchase them.

For ReaperConLine they will do some variation on the previous model, so those who want should have no fear of getting left out, as long as they get their order in on a timely manner.

As I've already ordered tickets for ReaperCon I'll be using our refund money to purchase the ReaperConLine  versions just as soon as they are available.

Oh I understand this completely. However I would point out that the only people guaranteed "full" VIP and regular swag bags were people who physically attended Reapercon. A few people may have been able to grab a bag online after the fact but they were usually complete- Reaper could usually cover their products in the online bags but that didn't always apply to the other vendors who donated to the swag bags. Putting this together was clearly a huge effort by everyone involved.

Now imagine you have just added in thousands more customers all over the world who want full swag and VIP bags, people who otherwise probably wouldn't have gotten them because they weren't physically going to Reapercon. Sure a few may catch a bag online but this is still potentially a huge increase in number of swag and VIP bags needed, maybe double, triple, or quadruple what they would have otherwise need to put together. That's a lot of extra work, not just on Reaper's end but also on their partners who are also contributing swag if everyone ordering is going to get a "full" swag bag.

Maybe the contents will be pared down to Reaper only items? Or maybe only a certain number of "full" regular and VIP bags will be made, and if demand exceeds supply then some people may miss out a bit? How would you determine who gets what, by lottery (shudder)? First come first served? Current badge holders first?

I'm a bit curious how this will pan out, and I'm just speculating about what could happen. I'm sure Reaper will do the best that they can, they are cool like that and all.

Oooooh, now that you mention it...  Wonder if they'll do such ticket sales.  That would be a lovely way to support a con I knew beforehand I wouldn't be able to make (finances are way too tight for such atm - we aren't even doing the Calgary Zoo this year like originally planned), and also not have to deal with the panic buying once the remainder go live on the store page...

I'm sure Reaper's partnering businesses will have to do a cost/benefit analysis that weighs things such as customer good will, continuity, exposure to new potential customers, etc. against the cost involved.

Not every convention organizing committee is going to be able to put their event online so ReaperConLine may be one of a limited number of chances for the sort of promotion that a a Con offers.

There's still plenty of time for these issues to be worked out and for the number of "complete" swag bags that can be turned out are determined.

Reaper has been good about communication on these issues in the past and I don't see any reason why there would be any change in that now.

The Swag Bag is always a good value, even if they run out of some of the third party goodies.

If you are already registered for this year, you can be assured that Reaper will take that into consideration when it comes time to ship out the Swag.  If not, pay close attention, they will make announcements when the new plans are in place.

Well it was disappointing when I got the alert yesterday. Was looking forward to getting to play some more DnD with you GEM, and the rest of the party.

I second the request if possible just roll my money over into the new bag.  If Reaper did roll the already purchase funds into the new bag version, would it possibly help with making the bags?  If so I’m game for it. The funding is already spent from my end, and would still ensure everyone that everyone who currently purchased the tickets would stay on the list for a bag. They sell like hot cakes as soon as they go online.

Stay healthy, and hope to see y’all next year!

No Problem.

So I can only arrange to go every other year. This just means I will start going in odd years rather than even ones.

I was leaning against going, even if it went forward this year.

Still looking forward to going eventually.  In person classes are better than Online ones.

The swag bag sounds interesting, but may switch the badge funds to regular reaper product or to the KS.

like Jeepnewbie, that money is already spent.

Reaper was pretty bad about communications last year. They still post information on other sites before it hits their own web page.

And I am not assured they will take registration status into account when it comes to this online thing that they haven't worked out yet.  I'm not hovering 20 hours a day on Twitch hoping for a prize draw the entire weekend.

I suspect you are right. Besides the logistical nightmare involved with letting people "roll over" their current badge fees into new swag for the online con (which may be why Reaper is looking at just refunding everyone as step #1) you have to remember that physically attending the previous version of Reapercon 2020 was impossible for a LOT of people. Most people around the world just cannot plan a trip to Texas on Labor Day weekend, and that is a huge hurdle that affected this year's badge sales. Now that Reapercon is being relaunched and the playing field for attendance has been leveled it hardly seems right to penalize these people for not buying badges for the previous con.

Just speculating on my end but I'm betting that Reaper will wipe the slate clean for previous registrations and just start over for the online con. Knowing Reaper it will still be pretty awesome.

Any chance you can share the high points here afterward, for those of us who don't hear so well and don't really do Twitch as a result?

Pretty sure I've asked this before, but 6PM CST isn't much use to those of us different time zones. Please list .. I'unno, Eastern and Pacific? along with ReaperLocalTime? It would be super helpful. ^_^
