Later it was my stepfather saying "I don't want goat heads in the carpet!" It all depends on what I'm doing, where I'm going, and all that. If at home, they're taken off after getting in the door, because they're stored in the front entrance... Although if I'm in and out of the house they stay on for obvious reasons. Visiting friends? Are we going out right after? They stay on. Are we going to the backyard? Probably staying on. Used to take them off all the time with only thick slippers to replace them. And considering how much winter there is up here making a snowy mess, it's not a difficult choice. Normally, I take off my shoes in a side room of the house rather than at the door because there's more room there. If I'm only walking on the hardwood floors, I will sometimes keep my shoes on, although i prefer to swap to my house slippers. In the former home I took them off the door and switched to slippers. God forbid I left a couple crumbs of dust on my wife's sterile floors. Plus it was ingrained in me to take my shoes off as a child by my mother so as not to dirty her carpet. So much that to this day I cringe whenever I see someone step on carpet with shoes. Now, having a set of shoes that are only for indoor use is perfectly acceptable.
