Was Rey a final girl?

Recommended Posts

Happy May the 4th.

the last movies had a darker sometimes horror theme. In order to defeat the big bad, they needed a hero. Rey. Was she a final girl? She followed the rules of a final girl. What do you think?

That's an interesting theory, but I'm pretty sure Rey wasn't the final girl.

The final girl doesn't have to be a girl, or to survive, they just have to win.

So my Final Girl would be Ben :winkthumbs:

Staying away from some beekeeper adjacent themes to the concept of a Final girl, I'd argue that, for a character to be a final girl, then would not their friends around them have had to die in horrible gruesome fashion?  I'm getting into spoiler territory here

Spoiler

I would argue that way too many of her friends remained alive (Finn, Poe, BB-8, etc) and those who did died hero's deaths, (Han and Leia both sacrificed themselves for the redemption of their son, and Luke, the mentor figure only sort of died but was still around to give her advice so does that even count?)

I'm actually a little more onboard with this, though

A final girl is more common but Nightmare on Elmstreet Part 2 had a final boy. I don’t think it has to necessarily be a girl. I can get on board with that, But... one of the rules in generally not doing any questionably bad moral decisions. Having a “redeemed” final girl kind of breaks the rules.
